Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

The Newport News Education Association President condemned the premise of the school division’s motion to dismiss Abigail Zwerner’s pending $40 million lawsuit.

The motion was filed last week by attorneys representing the School Board and argues that Zwerner, who was shot in her classroom at Richneck Elementary in January by a 6-year-old student, is only entitled to file a worker’s compensation claim because the injury she sustained from the shooting is a “workplace injury,” and that the shooting was a hazard of the job.

“This is not military, this is not the police department. This is an education system,” Graves said in an interview Wednesday.
In a Facebook statement posted Tuesday, Graves said, “These lawyers have started a significant hurricane in our district by saying that being shot is part of what teachers signed up for.”

That is a completely ridiculous, Argument. Very insulting and callous. If that is considered to be a risk of the job. This world is in worse trouble than it already is.

I'm glad they are upset about it and I agree with them, however, it's sad that you don't see LE anywhere yelling about it in the news or publicly for the average person, it's because it was police officers that they did.

I don't doubt most LE is upset about it, they work to arrest and get enough evidence to lock someone up and then politicians and judges let them out or don't sentence them to enough to begin with. They do not though say anything about it to the news. They should.

And they should band together and make solid arguments and noise about it and so should the public. There is a better chance though they would be listened to and CAN do it.

They too are at the mercy of politicians and not wise ones nor ones that have to work on the streets as they have to. The mayor, the governor, the county board, the fed govt. and lawmakers. Notice he does soft pedal in one spot, even he is hesitant to go too far.

I agree on sex offenders but murderers as well. It is pretty typical to find many of them have records of at least serious assault if not even a prior murder.

You know it never has made sense that if two people do the same vicious kind of assault but one has a victim that dies and the other one has a victim that somehow pulls through it is not treated the same. You only get a murder charge if the victim dies but perhaps the penalty should be the same or as stifff... But heck they don't even do life for all first degree murders these days.

This is AWFUL. And they don't know the relation of the child to the charged adults. Media doesn't know at least. Let's hope this isn't some fostered or adopted child but whether the child is or is their child or one of theirs, it is ABUSE just as what happened with the animals is. What is WRONG with people??!!!!!!!!!!!
