ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

IMO- stay in jail

@SheWhoMustNotBeNamed what are your thoughts on this statement?

The motion was filed last week by attorneys representing the School Board and argues that Zwerner, who was shot in her classroom at Richneck Elementary in January by a 6-year-old student, is only entitled to file a worker’s compensation claim because the injury she sustained from the shooting is a “workplace injury,” and that the shooting was a hazard of the job.

“This is not military, this is not the police department. This is an education system,” Graves said in an interview Wednesday.
In a Facebook statement posted Tuesday, Graves said, “These lawyers have started a significant hurricane in our district by saying that being shot is part of what teachers signed up for.”

Absolutely not.
Though it is becoming more and more a "danger associated with the job"... The article goes on to say "it is the “unfortunate reality” that teaching in America is a profession not without its dangers." But getting shot in school should not be one of those dangers. And the fact that it is now considered (by some) to be so...I just don't even know what to say.
If I trip and fall down the stairs, or get tackled on the sideline of a football game...those are workplace injuries. Someone pulling out a gun and shooting you should not be considered a "common jobsite hazard" for any job, except perhaps certain aspects of the military or law enforcement.
