Kiely Rodni was last seen attending "a party of more than 100 juveniles and young adults" near the Prosser Family Campground in Truckee, California, at 12:30 a.m. Saturday, according to the Placer County Sheriff's Office. Also missing from the party was Rodni's car, a silver 2013 Honda CRV.

Her phone has been out of service since the party, authorities said. At a news conference Tuesday, Placer County Sheriff's Sgt. Scott Alford said her phone last sent data at 12:33 a.m. Saturday

She really wasn't that far out though in the realm of things. I would think they'd do a short distance from shore at minimum. LE though said themselves a week or so ago that stages were necessary because once divers go in and possibly disturb silt, etc., the car can be covered in it and it makes them harder to find. It's why so many were pushing for the top kind of sonar and side sonar.

Yeah I gather the engine being the heavier part of the car, the car eventually starts to nose dive and then last night Dave Rader of Equus. said 9 times out of ten they then flip on their top/upside down.
Cars are basically leaky boats once they enter water. It's when they finally have enough water entering them that they finally sink. Many of the newer cars float even better with all of the sound dampening features that seals them up better.

So did the same person ditch the same cars in the same spot or is this where they naturally end up in that spot due to not a lot of size, drifting the same pattern, etc.? I think I recall a case like that. I've watched a fair amount of AWP videos back some time ago.
they had pinged the phone to the spot is how the got there to start with. They just happened to find the stolen car and didn't see her car under it. The missing person was a very similar situation as this. She was trashed, lost and drove her car into the river down the boat ramp. The pings had convinced the family she was there and they hired somebody to search for her there and they found her right there under the other car. The two vehicles weren't connected in any way.

that's the "floating" I was mentioning. I've been in a car that we were riding in and the road went by the lake. We hadn't been there in a while and didn't know the lake was flooded. It was dark and we were going to a friend's house and it's REALLY dark in the boonies and we couldn't see the water over the road. We hit the water and the car was floating a long ways away from where we entered. We at least had the thought to start pushing it towards the edge and got it to where the whole thing submerged before it sank. We probably moved it 20 or more feet and it was still going out when we started. It all happened so fast! We just happened to have the thought to slow down a bit because of thinking of hitting a deer. I can't imagine how far that car would have went out if we hadn't and more force could have possibly even knocked us out. It was quite the force with what we did hit it with even after slowing down.
I would be in total panic. Can't imagine. Well I can. I have come across such things but in daylight and able to stop in time but have had times I had to back slowly up all the way. I have a great fear of going in the water and don't like to drive in unknown areas especially at night. Even with no flooding, some areas have roads that are curvy and so close to the lake and level with it, it scares me a bit in the day time. I'd never text or not pay attention in such areas even when I know them and the conditions.

So you lost the car? Did you then have to have it retrieved?

We got it to where we could hook up the bumper to pull it out. The back end was all that was visible and it was a bright yellow car! it was my friend's parents old junker he had borrowed while he was waiting for parts for his car. I'm not sure if it survived or not. It didn't have much life left in it to start with.

She was probably passed out if the stories from her so-called friend were true, would be my guess and if she was going at any speed, she very well could have been knocked out by the force of hitting the water. Even as slow as we were going when we did hit the water, the impact was impressive and shocking and we were expecting it.

this is the same walk afterwards where I learned the stripes on the road are much smoother than the asphalt to walk on for a few miles while barefoot. I lost my shoes in the muck while trying to get the car closer to the edge.

Wow! Yeah, it's especially dark in those boonies! And needless to say, it would have been really dark where and when this happened!
As far to the location of the car, surely, the water current might be a factor as to which direction it drifted...

I suppose the most unusual circumstance I can think of is the one in which two cars from missing person cases from the sixties were found by pure happenstance in a lake in Oklahoma. From what I recall, they were located at the end of a boat ramp just right there in the marina and situated side by side.
Another interesting cold case that comes to mind is the one in which two teen girls were following another car to a party out near a gravel pit but never got there. Their car was just relatively recently found in a creek where it had gone off the road. It was right there by the bridge all that time! Apparently, it was due to a drought that the tires were visible and noticed- I think by a fisherman!

Well I was confident that if her vehicle was submerged, AWP would find it. In any case in which they've searched a location already searched by LE, they've explained that they've got better equipment and the experience and skill to use it.
I'm very surprised, though, that they didn't start with Prosser Lake and I'm anxious to hear what info influenced their decision to search other locations first. I mean, when I read descriptions of the LE's search of Prosser Lake- even from where I sit- I knew it was insufficient, that it simply couldn't have been adequate.
And just think how many more missing persons cases could be solved with more groups like this. I hope more pop up around the country. There are so many cases where the likely result is that they are in the water, and the LE search of the water turns up nothing. Just imagine without AWP. This case could go on for months or years, with people shouting that LE searched the water and found nothing so she MUST be somewhere else...

Dude and I were just talking about how they need to use these people with the specialized equipment and people that know how to use it and save these localities the expense of having equipment expense that only gets used occasionally and having the expense to train the people and keep their training current. Just pay the pros on an as needed basis. Not only would it be more efficient, it could save taxpayers a lot of $$.

These YouTube divers did in 35 minutes what cops couldn’t do in two weeks in Kiely Rodni search
The deep-diving YouTubers who claim to have found missing California teen Kiely Rodni said Monday it took them just 35 minutes — even though authorities had spent nearly 20,000 man-hours failing to find her.

Adventures With Purpose started searching Prosser Creek Reservoir early Sunday — and almost immediately found what they believe is the 16-year-old’s 2013 Honda CRV with a body inside, they said Monday.

If confirmed, it would be at least the 24th missing person case Adventures With Purpose’s team of 10 has solved in less than three years.

And as with many other such cases, they quickly found success in the Rodni dive despite local law enforcement insisting they had already carried out exhaustive searches in the very areas the body was found.

However, while they put out a wide net, the car and body were found close to where Rodni was last seen — and where police told Adventures With Purpose “they did a rigorous search,” according to one of the volunteer divers, Josh Cantu, 31.

“They gave us a grid map and made us confident we didn’t need to search here,” Cantu insisted.

Still, Bishop insisted in his update Monday that the local authorities had “been incredible to work with,” without detailing what assistance they provided.

“We understand that the resource we provide with our unique skillset is rare,” Bishop said in Monday’s update.

“It is an honor to help agencies and families all across the nation,” he said, promising to “share this knowledge over the next couple of days” with the official search crews who failed to find her.

“It is always our mission to promote and share the techniques we utilize so that our purpose can help as many people as possible,” Bishop said proudly.

I imagine water standing there with a moving car hitting it you would feel.

So you were in an old time bright yellow taxi cab? Just kidding lol.

I would doubt it survived very well or was worth doing anything with....

She could have passed out definitely. Hard to know what to think. Many made her sound more responsible than that but even the best who buckle down sometimes reach a point they say just today or just tonight I am going to have fun and do as I please. I though retain all of my questions and have no proof yet imo she was in bad shape at all as far as intoxication that makes me necessarily believe that's a fact. Cops have really said little of substance throughout. So it is all mostly others and most of them could have their own reasons for wanting to say as they do. Hard to say.

I DO believe there were drugs and alcohol at the party but mostly because that's a no brainer. Why have one otherwise. But I went to very few parties but one or two at 16 and I barely drank one beer. Of course I don't compare that to nowadays but just saying some can be responsible and still go. But others also push things. And that was just BEER.

Will they be able to run a tox screen at her autopsy after this amount of time?

Such cases will always leave me wondering. I mean in some it is high percentage it was accidental just by surrounding circumstances and the person and where and what they were known to be doing but others not so much. It would be soooo hard to never be sure if you didn't get adequate answers to most questions. Cases ruled suicides often make me feel that way as well. Both accidental and suicides and dying young with something they can't determine should be investigated in my opinion. Poisonings for instance. I wonder how many decades ago got away with such.

We often go on about how dumb criminals and/or murderers are but those are the ones who are caught...

On another note, cars and bodies in water are often missed or not found for years to come. If the car hadn't been in the water, she still might not be located yet.

it is soooo easy to get turned around on roads if you are in the boonies in the pitch black. Everything looks the same even when totally sober. A wrong turn in a place that has twisty roads to begin with would be so easy to do.
I go both ways on that. I could no more get lost on the back roads or main roads to where I grew up from certain areas to there no matter how I went so on one hand that it is difficult for me to believe. BUT she was 16 and possibly under the influence of one or more things. They say she was way familiar and knew it well but driving it and growing up riding to it with parents, etc. are two different things. If she was 20, I'd seriously doubt it but she couldn't have been driving long. What, a year at most?

LE in this case I thought was above and beyond many I've seen. Daily posts and more. Sharing little for facts but that's normal.

I also give them kudos for not letting egos get in the way with AWP. It does happen and has. They helped or so it sounded and let them go and gave them some facts. As for them finding her where LE claimed to search, and clear, I don't doubt they did likely cover it. They themselves said how difficult it is and you don't go diving and disturbing until you do the other things first. They are I am sure also bound by things AWP and such groups are not.

BUT AWP did do what LE couldn't. Both deserve credit in that LE didn't try to interfere and let them do their job. I've seen otherwise.

Yes from what I understand from other cases and what experts are already saying in this one. Certain organs (not sure which) etc. I do know they take a long time sometimes but it can be done among other things.

16, new driver and probably very little, if any, experience with alcohol.

Yep. Many kids these days know how to drive pretty well long before driving classes (I sure didn't) because they start out on Power Wheels as toddlers, then it is ATVS/golf carts, sn*wmobiles and far more. I'd never even been in a go kart.

Still though knowing you roads and maneuvering them is different but it's just really hard to say. She may have had it a year and been out there two dozen times.

Have we ever even heard a birth date for her? Not yet I am pretty sure we haven't.

My grandson started driver's ed early this summer and he is only 15.5. I was 16 before I even had classroom. He knows what he is doing but he did grow up operating a lot of things over the years. Just a couple of years ago though he couldn't tell you some of the small towns near home.

I can see it either way. Just don't know yet.
