ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

IMO- stay in jail

I suspect there is more to this story and likely on both sides. The Apple is known for tubing and it is also known for tubers drinking. It has been a thing since back in even my older siblings' time, my time and probably still is. It is a day of floating and fun with again drinking for most that go. I don't recall many not drinking and the reason for that is they don't want to be around tons of people, crowds really, drinking and some to excess.

It wouldn't surprise me if the minors were drinking and hard to say about the man arrested but very likely probably as well. WHERE were his wife and friends? I don't know what they mean by visiting the lake since this was the Apple River.

I'd like to know what he was doing out there and if what he said checks out. Was he bothering the girls or really looking for a cell phone...? Honestly what cell phone is going to be worth a hoot if in the river and if found anyhow? I guess it could have been in a waterproof case.

Thus far it doesn't sound like all was caught on video as to what started the problem or incident.

And I wonder if any of the youths will be charged as it sounds like they converged on him as well. That isn't self defense by the youths if he was not a threat at that moment.

It used to be a fun river trip with harmless drinking types quite honestly. I am sure nondrinkers went down too but again it was known for a day of floating and drinking. NIght camping and later daytimes may have been more of an issue but I tubed it many times without issue, people just floated, got some sun and had some drinks and all were for the most part pretty friendly any time I went. And I don't remember anyone being "armed". Maybe a guy would have a pocket knife to cut twine or rope to tie your group's tubes together but I never saw anyone brandish one and I doubt even that, I think you could get cut twine at the tube place if I recall. In fact, you didn't want anything on you that might get lost or wet as the tubing ends with some rocks and rapids.

@Mel70 would also know. She has referred to this river and floating down it not that long ago. A popular pasttime for decades near the WI/MN border for people from both states.

Somebody recorded most of it.

I know but it didn't souind like they have the start of what transpired. They say he slapped or punched a girl, they don't have that apparently. And I'd like to know what he was doing out there and if it is verified. Scuba diving in the Apple River looking for a cell phone? Really??? And who, one or all, was drinking etc. And where were his friends and wife. Etc., etc.

The person who started recording should be able to tell them what happened before they started recording.

yeah. waiting to hear all that and more. as it stands right now, the bit I read, I don't see reason to believe either side 100 percent.

there was a shooting or knifing a few years back on the opposite banks of I think the banks of the St. Croix River. A MN man and a few I think from WI. And someone ended up dead. Pretty rare thing hereabouts and it just shows not all take things in stride, someone turned both things physical, this case and that one. Who did? Which side? What and who exactly started anything and who escalated it?
