ID DEORR KUNZ: Missing from Timber Creek Campground near Leadore, ID - 10 July 2015 - Age 2

DeOrr was last seen in Lemhi County, Idaho on July 10, 2015. He was with his parents, Jessica Mitchell and Vernal "DeOrr" Kunz Sr., his great-grandfather, Robert Walton, and Walton's friend Isaac Reinwand. The group was camping at Timber Creek Campground in a remote, mountainous area about ten miles west of Leadore, Idaho.

At 2:35 p.m. Mitchell called 911 and said her son had disappeared. According to her, she left DeOrr with Walton and she and DeOrr Sr. went to explore the campground, and when they returned about ten to fifteen minutes later, the child was gone. They looked for him for about twenty minutes before calling 911.

According to Mitchell, DeOrr never went anywhere without his blanket, his cup or his toy monkey; all these items were left at the campground. An extensive search of the area turned up no indication of his whereabouts.

Although DeOrr's parents speculated he had been abducted, police have named them as suspects in their son's disappearance. They had been engaged, but they ended their relationship after DeOrr's disappearance. Neither of them has an arrest record.

Investigators said there were inconsistencies in the parents' stories and they had both failed polygraph exams; they believe DeOrr was killed, either intentionally or by accident, and his parents know where his body is.

According to the sheriff, there was "no credible witness" to say they had definitely seen DeOrr at the campground, and it's possible he was never there at all. His case remains unsolved and foul play is suspected.

Lemhi County Sheriff's Office prepares for annual search for DeOrr Kunz six years after disappearance

"I think he deserves to be found," said Lemhi County Sheriff Steve Penner. "We've been given that task to try to find him and I think that's largely the motivation."

New developments in this case have been far and few between in recent years, but Penner said it still remains an open investigation.

Penner told KTVB there is another big search planned at Timber Creek Campground for this summer. The Sheriff's Office does a search like this every year and will do a series of follow-ups if anything of interest is discovered.

Investigators have areas at the campgrounds where they have more interest and plan to spend more time there based on details from past searches. What Penner said they're looking for now are small details and making sure to keep their eyes close on the ground for any new discoveries.

On sixth anniversary of DeOrr Kunz’s disappearance, Sheriff says the search is far from over

Lemhi County Sheriff Steve Penner says DeOrr Kunz Jr. “deserves to be found” and the investigation for the missing child is far from over.

Publicly the case has been relatively quiet over the past two years but Penner says investigators are working behind the scenes.

“I don’t know what happened. Was he abducted? Was he a victim of some kind of foul play…or was it some kind of a nature take and by that I mean he could have slipped out of there and we just failed to find him?” Penner explains. “I guess I could say it’s one of those three.”

Fundraiser To Reignite Idaho Probe Into Deorr Kunz Case Ongoing

As the seven-year anniversary of the disappearance of a young boy in the wilderness of central Idaho approaches, state law enforcement is still urging the public to come forward with any information that might help solve this missing person case.

The website justiceforbabydeorr is devoted to updating the public on this case, and according to recent information on the site, funds are being raised in hopes of jumpstarting the investigation. A goal of $25,000 has been set to attain the services of an investigation team in hopes of solving this case.

What Do Idahoans Believe Happened To Missing Deorr Kunz Jr?

The case of a missing two-year-old boy who disappeared from a central Idaho campground almost seven years ago continues to gain attention on a national level. As the July anniversary of the incident approaches, there are still more questions than answers as to how the child vanished while four adults stood close by in broad daylight.

July 10 will mark seven years since Deorr Kunz Jr. went missing without a trace from a Leadore, Idaho, campsite. Following months of inactivity in the case, funds have been raised in an effort to jumpstart the investigation. Theories ranging from abduction to animal attack have been offered up over the years, and some believe the truth behind the disappearance is being withheld from public knowledge.

DeOrr Kunz Case Update

Klein Investigations and Consulting announced on their Facebook page that they have an agreement in place to rejoin the missing person case of DeOrr Kunz.

According to Klein Investigations, Klein has met with the new client and has arranged for the fundraiser which to date has raised just over $9,000 dollars and is moving fast to reach the goal of $20,000 dollars.

The money is being used for travel and lodging for the investigative team.

Klein says they will be handling the case in a different manner and that the base investigation is already complete.

The team is currently going over the past statements and mapping up to and including a trash dump mapping that was begun, but not finished when they left the case.

Klein says from this point further, there will be no other updates until the goal of finding the child is complete.

Announcement:
We are announcing this afternoon that we do have an agreement in place to rejoin the missing person case of Deorr Kunz. Mr. Klein has met with the new client and has arranged for the fundraiser which to date has raised just over $9,000 and is moving fast to reach the goal of $20,000. This money is being used for travel and lodging for the investigative team.
We will be handling this case in a different manner. The base investigation is already complete. The team is currently going over the past statements and mapping up to and including a trash dump mapping that was begun (but not finished) when we left the case.
From this point further there will be no other updates until the goal of finding the child is complete. We understand the fear that some have about our team moving back into the case, however, the fear might be well placed.
We thank all of you for your support - and ask for your thoughts and prayers as we begin Phase II of this case.

Oh, I believe that's what happened. Definitely.
There's no question in my mind about it.
Well we will have to goodnaturedly disagree on that one then. Did they find a path, hear screams, find blood? I hate even thinking like that but this boy imo at least went missing some ways away before any animal would have been involved. Imo.

The parents's behaviour and differing stories are just too suspicious IMO. Klein is also just putting up a show. It's sad, but I don't have much hope that this will be solved. 😢

I don't usually think animal attack, but in this case, I think it's a real possibility. However, I can't recall if they found signs of one in the area. There would have been something. A den, scat, prints, etc. Not necessarily blood or anything. They can snatch prey pretty quietly and cleanly. But something to indicate one or more was in the immediate area at the time.

I think it's more likely he wandered off and became lost. Each adult thought someone else was looking after him, and with possible drug/alcohol use he was probably gone a lot longer than anyone wants to admit. I do believe he was there, and I actually don't believe that he was directly harmed/killed. Could be way off.

that's the problem with more people is that they all can assume the others are watching them, when in actuality, nobody is watching them. It happens ALL the time.

We replaced our pool and it even came with a necklace that proclaims that the person wearing it is officially on duty and the person responsible for watching what is going on in the pool. This is how big of an issue this is when everybody is assuming somebody else is doing it.

I don't either sadly. The only way I can see it solved is if one day there is someone who had info all along that shares it. And I'm not saying anyone does but that that is the only way I see it getting solved...

I agree that things just don't add up and at minimum, we have inattention and at most, more... Jmo.

To me, since they thought he was being watched, then there'd be no reason to lie about how long, but regardless, in that wilderness, just a couple of minutes would have been enough.

The way I see it is if it is that wild then it is also that wild as far as child having to try to wander off through underbrush, thorns, roots, etc. He was TWO. I am not saying he can't have wandered far but I would imagine it wouldn't be far or long before he'd be crying imo from falling or being scratched, etc. I'm not saying there aren't animals but I grew up allowed to explore woods and such (hard to imagine nowadays) and wander and more and to go off the beaten track isn't easy for an older child even. I saw plenty of wildlife through my childhood, however, it was rare they came to you or out in the open and to snatch up a child with no screaming, mess, broken branches, etc. I don't know. There should have been some evidence or he was gone a long time and too far that anyone could hear his cries.

For me, I'd believe he tripped over a tree root and hit his head on a rock or fell down a ravine or cliff first... An animal coming along later, I could believe possibly. Wild animal attacks or kills of humans just are NOT that common. And a vast number of animals wouldn't even go near one.

All that said, they were not camping at a KOA and I do get that.
