Authorities searching for 10-year-old boy who disappeared in Poweshiek County

Authorities are searching for a 10-year-old boy who went missing from a mobile home park in Poweshiek County on Thursday morning.

Xavior Harrelson was last seen around 11 a.m. Thursday in Montezuma, according to the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office.

He was last seen wearing a red T-shirt, blue pajama pants and black high-top shoes. He has brown hair and blue eyes and is about 4 feet, 8 inches tall and weighs 100 pounds.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation joined the investigation Friday.

Xavior left his home in the Spruce Village Mobile Home Park and has not been seen since, Assistant DCI Director Mitch Mortvedt said. The boy’s mother believed Xavior had gone out to play with friends, he said.

“Obviously, we’re very concerned,” Mortvedt said. “This is a young boy — he’s only 10 years old — and he’s been missing for more than 24 hours.”

The mobile home park is in northwest Montezuma, less than half a mile from Diamond Lake County Park, which Mortvedt described as a “vast wooded area.”

Mortvedt said it’s unknown if there is any criminal aspect to the boy’s disappearance, “but we are treating it like there is and deploying as many resources as we can to find him.”

“Right now, we are double- and triple-checking his friends’ houses and the places he is known to hang out. We are canvassing the immediate areas and knocking on doors and talking to people, and we’ll expand the search from there if we need to,” he said.

Remains in Poweshiek Co. were in remote area not covered in ground search

A community that has waited more than four months to find out what happened to 11-year-old Xavior Harrelson is now trying to make sense of human remains found in a field about 5 miles northwest of Montezuma.

A farmer discovered the remains Thursday in a field accessible by a remote gravel road.

"The nearest house would probably be a half mile away," said Doug Helm, whose family farms the adjacent field, though he did not make the discovery. "A couple different directions there'd be houses, but you're not very close to anything."

The location had not been searched by people on the ground, although it may have been covered in aerial searches.

The precise location is not visible from passing vehicles on blacktop roads to the north and south, and it is obscured from the nearest home.

"It would definitely be considered remote," Helm said.
Yep, sure seems like it would be someone familiar with the location and this obscure site.

Expert says forensics will be key to identifying body found near Montezuma

Former FBI Agent Michael Tabman tells KCCI investigators most important tool is DNA evidence. It should help confirm the identity of the remains, and to help find a killer, if there is evidence of a crime.

He says it's likely the state medical examiner is gathering DNA from clothing and the body. DNA that can be run through an FBI database.

“There will be enough physical evidence once the body is found, and clothing is found, and we go back and look at his history. They will find a suspect in due time. Not when we want them to, but they will find it,” Tabman said.

Tabman also says Iowa investigators are likely now retracing Harrelson's steps from the time he disappeared to the time the remains were discovered and that means more interviews with those who saw him last.

Officials: Expect several more weeks as medical examiner works to identify adolescent remains found in Poweshiek County

One week down and six to eight more weeks to go, as officials work to identify adolescent remains found in Montezuma, Iowa last Thursday.

11-year-old Xavior Harrelson’s family is on pins and needles as they wait for the news of the possibility of those remains being that of Xavior. The remains were discovered by a farmer, less than five miles away from the boy’s Montezuma home.

Mitch Mortvedt with Iowa’s Division of Criminal Investigation says these things take time saying: “We collect DNA samples from his family or parents or any means that we have.” Mortvedt added in cases like these they sometimes use previous dental work to help get a match.

In the mean time, police are still asking for any tips to be reported to law enforcement either through the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s office or through the designated Xavior FBI tip website here.

2 weeks later, no answers after body of adolescent found near Montezuma

It has been two weeks since the body of an adolescent was discovered in a farm field near Montezuma.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation told KCCI Thursday there was nothing new to report.

It never fails to amaze me in some states/areas and cases, DNA, identification or autopsy results etc. gets like put on the front burner and results are quick for some agencies, almost immediate... For others, it is months...

I don't mean depending on circumstances either... Or one murder over another or case over another... Some contract out and some have their own... The ones who contract wait in line like everyone else if I understand it correctly... Not sure if that is the case here or it is due to investigation...

Anywhoooo, in this case, who knows but it is Iowa and the area is right as is the approximate age, etc. I think whether it is Xavior is a fairly safe bet but as to what happened to him and by whom that remains to be seen. Jmo.

'It became real:' News of Xavior Harrelson's death sinks in for Montezuma, hometown of the 11-year-old

Life moved along in Montezuma on Saturday morning.

Customers talked Iowa Hawkeyes with their local barista at Vivarium Coffee downtown. High school students chowed on Casey's breakfast pizza.

An elderly couple took a walk in their neighborhood, holding hands. A mother took her two children to the library for a Halloween costume exchange — the daughter was set on dressing up as scary clown, the son indecisive.

But in the back of everyone's minds in the town of about 1,500 was Xavior Harrelson, an 11-year-old boy who went missing from his northwest Montezuma home on May 27.

On Friday evening, authorities confirmed that a child's body discovered Sept. 30 in a field near 110th Street and Ewart Road — three miles from town— was Xavior's.

The cause of Xavior's death had not been released Saturday. Mitch Mortvedt, the assistant director of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, said authorities are investigating the death as suspicious.

With no cause of death released, the wait for answers continues

Like Hanna, other community members expressed a sort of comfort that Xavior had finally been found. But questions remain — what happened to Xavior, and why?

Christine Grimm, the local librarian, expressed empathy for Sarah Harrelson, Xavior's mother.

"As a parent, it would almost kill me — not knowing," Grimm, 40, said.

"I'm sad, but also relieved in a way. I hope this is the next step towards finding out what happened, and finding closure for his family," Grimm said.

Grimm would sometimes see Xavior at the library. He always had a smile on his face, she said, and he loved books.

Grimm let out a sigh.

"Now, we wait," Grimm said. "Again."

Interview with mom from July. More details on that morning. Mom had someone checking around for her to see if they could find him.
Also mentions that Xavior had a muscle degeneration thing like she does (the reason she had her amputation), so he wouldn't have walked that far on his own either...(he's got a walking stick, back pain, etc.)

JL is a man brought up during the Mollie Tibbetts trial. The one supposedly running a sex-trafficking ring and mom's ex.

A 50-year-old man who was a boyfriend of Xavior's mother has come under scrutiny and been jailed on a federal weapons charge, but authorities haven't alleged he was involved.

had a walking stick but rode a bike??? That seems like a ploy for ss benefits. I know somebody that did that very thing to their kid - all for benefits and mom got mad when kid blew it and got benefits taken.

What's next in Xavior Harrelson investigation?

The Division of Criminal Investigation said the autopsy on Xavior Harrelson is not complete and there is no official cause of death or determination if his death is a crime.

But that has not stopped the town from honoring Xavior.

Hanna is asking the town to honor Xavior at Monday night’s volleyball game at the school gym.

“We're asking community, and fans and family members to wear orange. We want to keep Xavior’s memory going,” Hanna said.

Residents said they're glad Xavior is no longer missing. But, now they want to know what happened to the boy.

“It's very sad," library director Christine Grimm said. "But, in a way, it's sort of a relief because he's no longer missing. Just thinking, as a parent of two boys, I think the not knowing would have about killed me."https://www.kcci.com/article/powesh...belong-to-xavior-harrelson-montezuma/37977673

Officials execute search warrant in connection to Xavior Harrelson case

Officials executed a federal search warrant at a home in southeast Iowa in connection to the Xavior Harrelson investigation on Tuesday morning.

The Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the search happened at around 6:45 a.m. in New Sharon, located southwest of Montezuma where Harrelson lived.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation confirmed the search was related to the Harrelson case and that The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is involved in the search.

At this time, officials have not released additional details about the search warrant that was executed Tuesday.

Search warrant executed in Mahaska County possibly connected to Xavior Harrelson investigation

A federal search warrant was executed Tuesday morning by a number of agencies in New Sharon that authorities say may be connected to the Xavior Harrelson investigation.

Federal agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives served the search warrant on a house on Elm Street in New Sharon.

Along with the ATF, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation was at the scene. Assistant Director Mitch Mortvedt told KWWL that the DCI was there "in the event it is or could be" connected to Harrelson's death.

Iowa ATF: New Sharon search warrant not connected to Xavior Harrelson case

Officials executed a federal search warrant at a home in New Sharon, Iowa in what many thought was in connection to the Xavior Harrelson investigation on Tuesday morning. The Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the search happened at around 6:45 a.m.

Public Information Officer and Senior Investigator with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives John Ham tells KYOU the search warrant was issued due to violations of federal gun laws. “Our warranted was just for that,” Ham said.

He adds that “any evidence that would have been recovered from the scene would have been only pertinent to that investigation.”

Ham did confirm Iowa’s Division of Criminal Investigation was on the scene as the house was at one point involved “in some way” in the Mollie Tibbetts trial.

A family member of Xavior Harrelson also confirmed to KYOU no family members live in the home at this time.

Report: Federal search warrant in New Sharon found no evidence related to Xavior Harrelson's death

ABC News affiliate KCRG-TV9 says the search stemmed from federal firearms charges filed against a man believed to be connected to Xavior Harrelson.

Iowa authorities assisted in a federal search warrant Tuesday morning in New Sharon to see if they could find any evidence relating to the disappearance and death of Xavior Harrelson, according to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI).

"We were there to assist and also in the event that there would be anything remotely related to Xavior's investigation," DCI Assistant Director Mitch Mortvedt told Local 5 in an email.

Mortvedt didn't go into further details in his email.

However, Local 5's ABC News affiliate KCRG-TV9 reports that no direct evidence related to Harrelson's death came up during the search.

The search was in relation to federal firearms charges filed against James Lowe in July. Lowe was charged with possessing a National Firearms Act firearm not registered to the possessor after a car he was driving was allegedly found with a sawed-off shotgun.

DCI initially said the search was related to Xavior Harrelson's case, but later clarified that state agents were there “to assist if there would be anything related to Xavior’s case. To say it is directly related would not be accurate.”

KCRG reports that previous court filings say Lowe had been in a relationship with Harrelson's mother Sarah Harrelson. The filing also says Lowe lived with Harrelson's mother before he went missing.

Funeral arrangements announced for Xavior Harrelson

Services for Xavior will take place on Saturday, November 6, 2021 at 10:00 A.M. at Journey Church in Marshalltown. A visitation will be held on Friday, November 5, 2021 from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Journey Church in Marshalltown. He will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery.

Iowa DCI: Xavior Harrelson’s cause of death may not be released any time soon

It’s been several weeks since human remains found in Montezuma were identified as 10-year-old Xavior Harrelson. Now, the community is anxiously waiting for the release of what may have caused his death.

But investigators with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigations say they may not release it. This in part because Harrelson’s death is still an active criminal investigation.

This means the Iowa state medical examiner’s office is allowed to withhold the cause of death if the investigation is pending.

At this time, there are no plans on when that may be.
