Authorities are searching for a 10-year-old boy who went missing from a mobile home park in Poweshiek County on Thursday morning.

Xavior Harrelson was last seen around 11 a.m. Thursday in Montezuma, according to the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office.

He was last seen wearing a red T-shirt, blue pajama pants and black high-top shoes. He has brown hair and blue eyes and is about 4 feet, 8 inches tall and weighs 100 pounds.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation joined the investigation Friday.

Xavior left his home in the Spruce Village Mobile Home Park and has not been seen since, Assistant DCI Director Mitch Mortvedt said. The boy’s mother believed Xavior had gone out to play with friends, he said.

“Obviously, we’re very concerned,” Mortvedt said. “This is a young boy — he’s only 10 years old — and he’s been missing for more than 24 hours.”

The mobile home park is in northwest Montezuma, less than half a mile from Diamond Lake County Park, which Mortvedt described as a “vast wooded area.”

Mortvedt said it’s unknown if there is any criminal aspect to the boy’s disappearance, “but we are treating it like there is and deploying as many resources as we can to find him.”

“Right now, we are double- and triple-checking his friends’ houses and the places he is known to hang out. We are canvassing the immediate areas and knocking on doors and talking to people, and we’ll expand the search from there if we need to,” he said.

PUBLIC SEARCH FOR MISSING MONTEZUMA 10-YEAR-OLD XAVIOR HARRELSON SCHEDULED SUNDAY, MAY 30​

The search for 10-year-old Xavior Harrelson continues. Law enforcement appreciates the public’s desire to help locate Xavior. However, the investigative and search efforts on Saturday, May 29, will be conducted by law enforcement and first responders only.

Montezuma residents are encouraged to check their own properties and surveillance systems. Xavior was reported missing on the afternoon of Thursday, May 27th, and was possibly wearing blue pajama bottoms, a red T-shirt and black tennis shoes.

Law enforcement officials are asking for the public’s assistance with searching for Xavior on the morning of Sunday, May 30. For those who are able to assist, please be at the Montezuma High School north parking lot at 9:00 a.m. Please dress appropriately for the weather and walking outside. Those wishing to assist with the search must be 18 years of age or older, have a valid photo identification and be in good physical condition.

But authorities consider him endangered because of his age, Mortvedt said.

"We're holding out hope," Mortvedt said. "We have nothing to indicate anything other than that."

By the time crews started their searches Sunday morning, Harrelson had been missing almost 72 hours. Ferdinand acknowledged the odds were stacked against searchers, but said his faith in Jesus made him hope Harrelson is still alive.

Law enforcement has searched neighborhoods and other homes in Montezuma, Mortvedt said. On Saturday they searched Diamond Lake Park. Two dive teams also searched the lake, he said. Airplanes, drones, all-terrain vehicles, horses and dogs have also been used, he said.

"We know that kids often go out there on bikes and trails," Mortvedt said.

Flatter areas outside of places already searched were mostly being searched Sunday, he said.

But a couple of buses took volunteers to rugged areas at Diamond Lake Park. Volunteers wandered through waist-high thickets and ducked under barbed wire fences.

Harrelson's home is at a mobile home park near Montezuma High School.

"Diamond Lake is straight west of us," Mortvedt said at the high school. "Around the corner here, it's more flat rolling hills, so it's areas like that we're focusing on. If he did wander away, how far could he get with no food, water? You wouldn't think all that far."

Larena Windmer watched dozens of searchers in bright yellow vests crawl under barbed wire dividing her property from Diamond Lake Park. Windmer already searched areas of her property for Harrelson.

Good to know. A child can certainly cover a lot more ground on a bicycle.
I was hoping to be able to rule out "going for a swim in the nearby lake" since his bike would likely be found on the ground nearby.

The assistant director for Iowa DCI, Mitch Mortvedt, said that the boy’s family has been cooperative throughout the investigation; Xavior is considered endangered due to his young age.

Mortvedt added that nearby lakes and areas around the lakes have been searched by dive teams, including Diamond Lake Park, which didn’t yield any results. Volunteers scoured nearby schools and other areas in the vicinity, while over a hundred officers joined in the search.

“It’s small towns around here, so everybody comes together. It was the same thing when it happened with Mollie and everything,” volunteer searcher Clayton Van Wyk said.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said it is re-evaluating its search for Xavior Harrelson on the fourth full day after he went missing.

The DCI said it’s confident over the weekend they were able to search the area an 11-year-old would likely be able to travel on his own. Now, the agency will go through all the pieces of information it has to see if any lead was overlooked. Then, it will likely continue searching the area, with boots on the ground actively combing the landscape again.

FBI Joins Search For Xavior Harrelson, 11-Year-Old Boy From Iowa Missing Since Thursday​

In Iowa this morning, the FBI has joined local law enforcement and the community in the search for Xavior Harrelson, an 11-year-old boy who disappeared last week.

CBS 2’s Charlie De Mar reports authorities are using dogs, drones, and dive teams as they desperately try to figure out what happened to Xavior.


Investigators were at Xavior’s family home in Montezuma, Iowa, on Tuesday, hunting for information about his disappearance.

Authorities said Xavior was last seen on his bike near his home last Thursday morning, wearing a red shirt, blue pajama pants, and black shoes.

But neighbor Kelly Kautzer said she didn’t see him that morning, which was unusual.

“He was always outside, I’d say at least by 9 o’clock, riding his bike or just walking in the area. That’s about the time he’d start playing with my daughter,” she said.

Mitch Mortvedt, assistant director of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, said authorities cannot rule in or rule out the possibility of foul play at this point.

On at least one of the nights since Xavior has gone missing, temperatures in the area dipped to the 30s, and Mortvedt said as more time goes by, its more troubling that Xavior hasn’t been found.


Investigators said Xavior’s family is cooperating, but they did not want to talk at this time.

The Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office is asking for anyone with surveillance video in or near the city of Montezuma to come forward as the search for missing 11-year-old Xavior Harrelson continues.

In a statement posted on Facebook, the sheriff’s office said investigators have already collected all known surveillance video in the Montezuma area, but that they are reaching out to locate any video systems they might not be aware of.

Anyone with information on any possible video is asked to contact the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office Tips Hotline immediately at 641-623-2107.

On the last night 11-year-old Xavior Harrelson was known to have been at home, neighbors across Spruce Village say they heard a heated argument with loud shouting coming from the trailer.

According to several witnesses, verbal fights were not unusual in the home. In hindsight, residents wonder whether the argument they heard May 26 had any role in the boy's disappearance.

Kevin Kautzer and his family are Xavior's next-door neighbors, and Kautzer's daughter played and rode bikes with Xavior every day.

"There was a huge fight about 8 p.m. between Xavior and his mom, and they were shouting back and forth," he said. "Couldn't really tell what it was about, but it was really heated and it went on about 20 minutes."

By the morning of May 27, no one from the trailer park reported seeing Xavior.

Officially, law enforcement says the boy was in fact seen May 27, although no details have been provided about who saw him.


Rix says the mother -- whose name has not been made public in relation to the search -- refused to report her son's disappearance to police. So Rix did so herself Thursday night.

"The other thing I can't really wrap my head around is why isn't anybody in the family gone on [TV]?" she said. "And so that's why I'm Xavior's voice. And that's how I feel. And that's why I keep doing this is because somebody has to speak for him."

But by the time she started leading a search effort the evening of May 27, she estimates Xavior could have been missing for 20 hours.

Investigators continue to say it's not clear whether the disappearance was some kind of youthful accident or a criminal act.

The Poweshiek County Sheriff's Department today asked residents in Montezuma to check whether any home security cameras may have footage to help in the search.

Around Spruce Village, the passing time only adds to the fears.

"The gut's telling me it's not just wandering off because he never leaves his bike," said Angel Carman, a neighbor. "He loves his bike."

Neighbors said there were weekly “screaming matches” between Xavior Harrelson and his mother, Sarah, in their home. The same home was searched with K9 units along with the entire trailer park on Tuesday.

Her son was reported missing six days ago and the FBI began assisting local and state law enforcement with the search on Tuesday. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said it’s continuing to re-evaluate its search for Xavior after searching a mile radius from Harrelson’s home in the Spruce Village Mobile Home Park in Montezuma. The Poweshiek County Sherriff’s Office on Wednesday asked for people near Montezuma to hand over surveillance video.


Neighbors and family members said Xavior acted as a caretaker for his mother, who is an amputee.

Samantha Rix, who first reported Xavior missing on Thursday, said the mother has difficulty putting on her prosthetic leg because of another health condition.

“Things she can’t do he helps her with,” she said “You know, and Xavior knows that and he knows that he’s not just her son. He’s her other leg.”

She said she knows the mother because Xavior is friends with her 6-year-old friend.

Rix said Xavior was very close with his mom and said their relationship was full of love. However, neighbors at the Spruce Village Mobile Home Park said Xavior would sometimes ask neighbors to stay in their homes instead.


The mother hasn’t talked on-camera with any media yet, but family members said off-camera they miss and love Xavior.
