Authorities searching for 10-year-old boy who disappeared in Poweshiek County​

Authorities are searching for a 10-year-old boy who went missing from a mobile home park in Poweshiek County on Thursday morning.

Xavior Harrelson was last seen around 11 a.m. Thursday in Montezuma, according to the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office.

He was last seen wearing a red T-shirt, blue pajama pants and black high-top shoes. He has brown hair and blue eyes and is about 4 feet, 8 inches tall and weighs 100 pounds.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation joined the investigation Friday.

Xavior left his home in the Spruce Village Mobile Home Park and has not been seen since, Assistant DCI Director Mitch Mortvedt said. The boy’s mother believed Xavior had gone out to play with friends, he said.

“Obviously, we’re very concerned,” Mortvedt said. “This is a young boy — he’s only 10 years old — and he’s been missing for more than 24 hours.”

The mobile home park is in northwest Montezuma, less than half a mile from Diamond Lake County Park, which Mortvedt described as a “vast wooded area.”

Mortvedt said it’s unknown if there is any criminal aspect to the boy’s disappearance, “but we are treating it like there is and deploying as many resources as we can to find him.”

“Right now, we are double- and triple-checking his friends’ houses and the places he is known to hang out. We are canvassing the immediate areas and knocking on doors and talking to people, and we’ll expand the search from there if we need to,” he said.

I feel good reason here. So they are still looking at a NUMBER of people? I had the sence they had narrowed it last I recall.

Who is doing his mom's bidding now?

Not saying she did it, just that she did not take care of her son so much as he took care of her.

As I recall it anyhow. I doubt she hauled him out anywhere so there's more to it imo/someone else.

Time for a resolution and justice though... It's 3.5 years...

i9 Investigation: New information in case of missing Iowa boy found dead​

Investigators say they have new information bringing them closer to finding who killed a 10-year-old Iowa boy.

This month marks four years since Xavior Harrelson vanished from his mobile home in Montezuma. He was just days away from his 11th birthday.

Specifically, investigators are learning new details about what lead up to Xavior’s death and what happened afterwards. They believe there are multiple people out there with information that could help bring the case to a close.


Special Agent Ryan Kedley with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and Chief Deputy Steve Kivi of the Poweshiek County Sheriff’s Office have been working this case from the very beginning and they haven’t lost hope.

“I think for me the hope comes from the information that we’re getting,” Chief Deputy Kivi said.

Special Agent Kedley says more people have been coming forward with information over the last year and a half which has lead to new details, search warrants, and interviews to help them connect the dots.

“Myself, Chief Deputy Kivi, the whole investigative team are beginning to understand a few more of the dynamics and the elements that lead to Xavior’s death and then the dynamics immediately following Xavior’s death that help paint a picture for why it’s taken so long for us to get this clear picture,” said Kedley.


The investigation focused first on Xavior’s inner circle, meaning his family and friends. Xavior’s mother has been open with investigators from the start.

“Even in the last few months we’ve sat down and had conversations with Ms. Harrelson. She spoke with us early on. So there’s never been a time where she was uncooperative,” Kedley said.

Xavior’s inner circle revealed another theme for the investigation, drugs. His mom Sarah was sentenced for selling meth in 2023. Her former boyfriend James Lowe was described as a step-father figure to Xavior. Lowe also has a history of drug use and was the center of a federal firearms search of a home in New Sharon just weeks after Xavior’s body was found.

Even as pieces come together, investigators remain tight-lipped on specifics.

“Our number one goal is the truth about the death of this 10-year-old boy. People are just going to have to trust us really that we are doing everything we can and there are reasons we can’t share that information,” Kivi said.

Xavior’s own family still doesn’t know how he died.

“We’ve had conversations with them about why and thankfully they’ve been nothing but supportive,” said Kedley.

As more of the puzzle is pieced together investigators are urging those with information to speak up.

“It’s up to people to come forward and say okay allow me provide some color to this. Like you’ve got the black and white clinical stuff here, allow me to provide some context as to maybe why things happened,” Kedley explained.

With each passing day they are inching closer to answers and no matter how taxing, they say they’ll never lose hope.

“He was a 10-year-old kid. He deserves nothing less than our best,” said Kivi.
