Multiple victims have been transported from the scene to area hospitals via ambulance and others were taken by officers, after a red SUV drove through the Waukesha Christmas Parade, Waukesha Police Chief Daniel P. Thompson said in a press conference.

The Waukesha Police Department has sent a push alert to cellular phones in the area asking those "within a ½ mile radius of the 5 points downtown" to immediately shelter in place.

People were seen on the ground injured after the incident, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel intern Kaylee Staral, who was at the parade, told CNN's Pamela Brown Sunday night.

About "20 to 30 minutes into the parade a red SUV came running down the middle of the street -- there were a lot of screams -- and we almost thought maybe it was Santa but it was a red SUV and it hit a lot of people," Staral said.

Man accused in fatal Wisconsin parade crash changes plea

A man accused of killing six people and injuring dozens more when he allegedly drove his SUV through a Christmas parade in suburban Milwaukee last year is mounting an insanity defense.

Darrell Brooks Jr. faces more than 80 charges in connection with the incident Nov. 21 in Waukesha. He pleaded not guilty in February.

His attorneys told Judge Jennifer Dorow during a hearing Monday that Brooks is now pleading not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. Dorow said she will appoint experts to examine him. If the defense can show he couldn’t conform his conduct to the law he would be committed to a mental health facility rather than prison.

MILWAUKEE —
The man convicted of killing six people and injuring dozens more in the Waukesha Christmas Parade attack is headed back to trial.

This time, it will be for alleged crimes committed in Milwaukee County.

Darrell Brooks is accused of running over the mother of his children just weeks before the parade attack in November 2021.

He also faces charges in Milwaukee of witness intimidation, intimidating a victim and bail jumping.

The trial is scheduled for May.

Brooks is currently serving six life sentences for the parade attack.

Last year in Milwaukee County court, a judge sentenced Brooks to another two years in prison after he pleaded guilty to carrying a firearm as a convicted felon in 2020 when prosecutors charged him with shooting at his own nephew.

Yep. It's constant. Another one that never should have been free to harm further victims. I have said it before but the blood of many victims is on the hands of judges and other officials who make these decisions or plea bargains or release, etc.
