Case History
Florida Jane Doe's body and clothing was found in a dense wooded area. Her nude body was found February 15 near a frequently used illegal campground on West Summerland Key, just south of the Bahia Honda Channel Bridge.

For over a decade, police in the Florida Keys have been trying to solve a mystery -- a mystery involving a young girl. Sadly, this girl is only known as Florida Jane Doe. After all these years, detectives are still unable to find out who she is and what happened to her.

The case began on February 15, 1991. Windsurfers camping in the area near Bahia Honda State Recreation area, located near mile marker 35 on US 1 in the Florida Keys, made the gruesome discovery of a young dead girl. Her body was laying on a dirt trail in a heavily wooded area. Police say the victim was a white female girl about 15 to 20 years old, who was beaten and strangled to death with her bikini top. Her face was bruised by a beating, apparently when she was killed. Investigators believe the victim was raped, but that has not been proved. An autopsy determined Florida Jane Doe had been killed the day before on Valentine's Day.

Monroe County Sheriff's Office opened up a homicide investigation. First, they needed to identify the body. They had few clues to go on but they hoped one item would jog someone's memory. The girl was wearing a knitted, long-sleeved sweater with wide red, black and purple horizontal stripes; long knee length denim shorts; and black ankle-high Indian-moccasin booties with red stitching.

Florida Jane Doe also has two tattoos including a large heart with the word "Love" in the middle of it on her upper left arm. The other tattoo is a cross with radiating lines of line behind it in the web of her left hand. The girl weighed about 145 pounds, had brown eyes and straight, collar-length dark brown hair. An autopsy indicated she had taken good care of her teeth and around age ten she had a molar extracted.

She was seen by another eyewitness at mile marker 15 and around 6:30 that night at mile marker 17. That was the last sighting of the mystery girl.

Detectives got tips early on and learned that Florida Jane Doe had been seen by motorists hitchhiking along US 1 in the Keys. Because of her clothing especially a sweater and moccasins, she stood out. Based on the information, police determined on Valentine's Day the girl was in Key West and walked northbound on US 1 on Big Coppitt Key, about ten miles north of Key West. She was seen by another eyewitness at mile marker 15 and around 6:30 that night at mile marker 17. That was the last sighting of the mystery girl.

In 1993, police attempted to put a face to this unknown girl by creating a computerized photo of what Florida Jane Doe may look like. To this day, police have no information indicating where this girl is from or who she is, therefore, detectives are unable to solve this horrific murder. Detectives are asking again for people all over the country to take a look at the computerized photo, the clothes and the tattoos. One small tip could give them the answers they need to solve this case.

News Release
Valentine Case homicide remains unsolved; FDLE and Monroe County Sheriff's Office trying to identify victim and solve murder case
February 14, 2007

Feb. 14, 2007 - The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Monroe County Sheriff's Office are asking for the public's help in trying to solve the homicide of an unidentified female who was murdered on Valentine's Day 1991.

The white female victim, who is believed to have been between 16 to 25 years old at the time of her death, was found on West Summerland Key in Monroe County. The victim had been strangled with her own bathing suit top and her nude body was found on a dirt trail in a thick, wooded area on Feb. 15, 1991. Her face also was bruised during a beating.

FDLE agents and Monroe County Sheriff's investigators have been trying to identify the victim, known as Florida Jane Doe, and solve her murder for 16 years. The homicide case remains open.

Investigators said the victim was 5 feet 4 inches tall, weighed 145 pounds and had straight, dark brown hair that was cut above the collar. She also had brown eyes, and each of her ears had been pierced four times.

The victim also had two tattoos - a large heart with the word "Love" was on her upper left arm, and she had another tattoo of a cross with sun rays emitting from its center. That tattoo was on her left hand between her thumb and forefinger.

Investigators said an autopsy revealed that the victim may have carried a baby to full-term and was a non-smoker. Agents said the victim had taken good care of her teeth and had a molar extracted when she was about 10 years old.

Agents said the victim's clothing was found near her body. Some of the items recovered were a long-sleeved, pinkish-red- and bluish-purple-striped sweater, knee-length denim shorts and size 6 ½ B black moccasin-style booties with red stitching. She also had on a watch with a silver band and wore four earrings in one ear and two earrings in the other ear.

The victim was last seen hitchhiking along U.S. 1 from Key West to Big Coppitt Key on Feb. 14, 1991. She had been spotted by eyewitnesses at mile marker 15 and then mile marker 17, agents said. Those were the last reported sightings of the homicide victim.

Last year, a new facial reconstruction was made of Florida Jane Doe. Her photo is available on the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's website at www.fdle.state.fl.us and can be found under unsolved homicides.

Anyone with information on the victim's identity or the case is urged to call FDLE Special Agent Dennis Haley at 305-292-6705 or Monroe County Sheriff's Detective Terry Smith at 305-289-2410. For more information, please contact Paige Patterson-Hughes with FDLE at 786-336-1052.

An autopsy revealed that Jane Doe was sexually assaulted and severely beaten. She had stretch marks on her abdomen that indicated a previous pregnancy. Jane Doe also suffered from pelvic inflammatory disease, and had a large cyst on her right ovary which would have caused her significant pain. She likely sought medical attention for her condition.

Jane Doe stood approximately five feet five inches tall and weighed 130 pounds. Her ears were pierced four times and she had two tattoos. Both tattoos appeared to be non-professionally done in blue ink.

1993 reconstruction of Valentine Doe

The body of a sixteen to twenty-five-year-old female was found, around the day after her death on February 15, 1991 in Big Coppitt Key,Monroe County, Florida, located in the Florida Keys. She had been strangled, beaten and left in the woods in the Bahia Honda State Recreation Area.[45][46] Authorities also suspect that she may have been raped.[47] The victim wore multiple earrings in each ear, had dark eyes and brown hair as well as two tattoos, one being a heart on her left arm reading "love" and the other a small cross on the left hand. She likely wore a striped blue and red sweater, jeans, and moccasins decorated with turquoise beads, which were found near the body. The clothing that she wore indicated she was not from the area, as well as the fact that she didn't have any tan lines. Other distinguishing characteristics include stretch marks on her stomach and cysts present on her Fallopian tubes andovaries. She may have also been pregnant at one time in her life.[46] The victim was five feet four inches and weighed 145 pounds. Her face and clothing were reconstructed into a composite image in 1993 and was later reconstructed by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.[48] Her case was featured on America's Most Wanted.

Unsolved Mystery: “Valentine Doe”

An area known as “the horseshoe,” in the Florida Keys, isfrequented by windsurfers and campers. It’s a place of fun in the sun andescape from the daily grind. Not 10 feet from the picturesque shoreline startsa heavily wooded forest.

It was there that the body of a young girl was found nude, strangled by the strings of her bikini top. She was murdered on Valentine’s Day, 1991, and found the next day. Investigators call her “Valentine Doe.”

There were some clues. Witnesses saw Jane Doe hitchhiking the day of her murder. She was last seen near mile marker 17 on U.S. Highway 1, about 18 miles from where her body was discovered. Two witnesses from the “horseshoe” area independently observed an older model white pickup truck with a camper shell in the area, driven by two white males. One of the witnesses saw the pickup on Feb. 14 and the other remembers the truck in the area two to three days prior.

Blood was discovered on a nearby dirt road. Drag marks led investigators to scattered pieces of the girl’s clothing. They found a “Forenza” brand cardigan sweater with wide, horizontal stripes and silver buttons, denim shorts and black, ankle-high moccasins with red stitching and leather fringe.

After 25 years, police continue to search for ID of ‘Valentine Doe’

pr76vVB.jpg

On February 15, 1991, police say the body of a young woman was found in a heavily wooded area near a shoreline of the Florida Keys.

The woman, believed to be between the age of 16 and 25, had been sexually assaulted, beaten, and then strangled with the strings of her bikini top, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).

Investigators believe the woman had been murdered on Valentine’s Day, the day before her body was found, according to NCMEC. She was given the nickname of “Valentine Doe.”

Witnesses reported seeing the woman hitchhiking the day of her murder on U.S. Highway 1, about 18 miles from where her body was found, NCMEC reported. Blood and drag marks were also discovered on a nearby dirt road, the organization added.

An older model white pickup truck with a camper shell had been seen in the area in the days leading up to the woman’s death, according to NCMEC. The area is frequented by windsurfers and campers.

A NCMEC forensic artist developed a facial reconstruction image of what the woman would have looked like, yet 25 years after her death, she remains unidentified.

The woman was described as a white female weighing 145 pounds with brown eyes and straight, collar-length dark brown hair. She had four earrings in each ear and two tattoos, including a heart on her upper left arm and a cross on her left hand.

The woman also had stretch marks on her abdomen, which indicated she had once been pregnant, according to NCMEC.

Detectives with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office say they have exhausted the few leads they had in the case, though they remain hopeful that someone, someday, will come forward to identify the woman.

Her murder is still under investigation.

Anyone with information about “Valentine Doe” is asked to call the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at 1-305-853-3211 or the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children at 1-800-THE-LOST
