ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Disgraced Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes is citing her recently born child as another reason she should be allowed to delay the start of a more than 11-year prison sentence while her lawyers appeal her conviction for duping investors about the capabilities of her failed company’s blood-testing technology.

The birth of Holmes’ second child was confirmed in court documents filed last week in advance of a March 17 hearing about her bid to remain free during an appeals process that could take years to complete.

Holmes isn’t citing her two children as the only reason she should be allowed to stay out of prison during her appeal. Her lawyers contend that an array of mistakes and abuses made during her trial make it likely her conviction will be overturned. They are also pointing to Holmes’ unblemished record while she has been free on bail during the four-and-half years since her criminal indictment as evidence that she isn’t a flight risk or a danger to the community.

A court has ruled that Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes has to go to prison, denying her request to stay home while she appeals her conviction.

The US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit said Tuesday that Holmes hadn't shown that the appeal raised a "substantial question" of law or fact that is "fairly debatable," or that even if it did it likely wouldn't lead to a reversal of the verdict, a new trial, or a different sentence.

<snip>

Holmes had asked Judge Edward J. Davila, US district judge for the Northern District of California, to let her stay out of prison while she appeals her conviction. Davila denied her request, and Holmes since appealed this decision.

Separately, Davila also ordered Holmes and former Theranos COO Sunny Balwani to pay $452 million in restitution to "the victims of their fraud conspiracy," including Rupert Murdoch, Walgreens, and Safeway.

$457 million? She made a nice profit.

SCHOHARIE — A jury convicted Nauman Hussain of 20 counts of second-degree manslaughter — one for each person killed in the Oct. 6, 2018, limousine crash off a country road in Schoharie County.

Hussain was convicted of the top count just after 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, and faces five to 15 years in prison when he is sentenced on May 31. The jury deliberated for less than six hours before agreeing with prosecutors that his negligence allowed a decrepit stretch limousine to be on the road that day.

I don't know what state this is in, but Kansas doesn't require auto inspections.
