ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

She wasn't in on it then?
Well I guess I don't know. I guess I assumed since he was leaving for a woman in another country that she wasn't. I guess she could have been in on it though. What are your thoughts on it? I think only he's been arrested so far though. And either way he's still an idiot.

That man is an idiot and I hope his wife has the sense to divorce him.
The article says she filed for an annulment. I just wondered if he had life insurance.

There has been a bad cyclone in the Indian Ocean today. Hundreds feared dead. It is between Mozambique and Madagascar.

See link for map and full report.

One local resident, Ibrahim, told AFP of “apocalyptic scenes” as he made his way through the main island, having to clear blocked roads for himself.

Mayotte’s 320,000 residents had been ordered into lockdown on Saturday as Chido bore down on the islands, bringing winds of at least 226 kilometres an hour (140mph).

An annulment rather than divorce, interesting. Has to be certain reasons to have such granted I think doesn't there. Been so long since I heard of one I can't recall....

Seems to me he had life ins, and that was part of the plan, but to leave his kids and family but they'd have the money.

However, I didn't follow this closely, maybe that was speculation by people. What is he charged with, I figured insurance fraud or faking death if there is such a charge. Daughter was here and just left so haven't actually read the links.

I wish to HECK news would learn to put a state in their article headlines. Maybe they don't have wide circulation or are even on the 'net but people share them and then it is like well where is this. Of course maybe they do it for the click one has to do to see what state, sometimes even country, it's in. I saw, I left. Maybe I will go back and read, but I guess they got their click. Might read later. Not sure.

I run an outdoor Christmas market. My heart ❤ is with them.

BerlinCNN —
At least five people were killed and more than 200 injured after a car plowed into a crowd at a Christmas market in the German city of Magdeburg on Friday, local authorities said.

“It is unimaginable that this is happening in Germany,” Reiner Haseloff, the prime minister of Saxony-Anhalt state, said during a visit to the scene with other officials on Saturday, confirming the latest death toll which included one toddler.

He's just resigned.

Investigators searched a top floor of NYPD headquarters last week, seeking evidence in the tawdry sex-for-overtime scandal exposed by The Post, sources said.

The sleuths performed a crime scene analysis in the 13th-floor office of recently ousted Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey at One Police Plaza, where he allegedly preyed on Lt. Quathisha Epps and demanded sexual favors from her in exchange for green-lighting her staggering overtime pay, a source said.

The investigators likely were looking for evidence of sexual abuse, a potential felony, a source said.

Epps alleged in an Equal Opportunity Complaint that Maddrey, the Force’s top uniformed cop, had sex with her eight to 10 times in his office.

“She’s alleging it was coerced. That’s non-consensual,” an ex-NYPD official said of a possible criminal charge in the case.

Maddrey’s lawyer denied the allegations on Friday, insisting the ex-NYPD honcho had a “consensual” relationship with Epps, and that he was weighing a civil suit against her.

It wasn’t clear what items the cop removed.

I think I had better go try to find some cooking. NY is all over the place in the month of December. Not meaning it shouldn't be shared at all, just noticing such, but there is probably a reason it is getting all new news all of a sudden... It's of course a major news hub, but also major political, story after story lately... Hannah (never made it though), the subway one, the CEO one, this one, just off the top of the head..

More bad stuff happens in NY. Top of the list for LE corruption, murders, arson, violence etc. Not surprising really.

No it's not surprising. I agree.

It's a major political hub.

I have to be careful but we could go just to Epstein, they couldn't even keep him alive yah. Or to LISK where the atty the wife got well....

NEVER ever would I go there. I did used to want to when young, more naive.

It's interesting though that in this month of Dec so much is NY.

Maybe reporters and news, not.

The sh*t in the h annah case so ridiculous. Going to take pics in NY, green cards, you name it, Like some alternate reality. Someone tell me that many DO live in the real world? I know I do.

Yes and to your other point, crime rates etc are so manipulated, not just there, but everywhere. Probably tops there though.

A Pentagon appeals court on Monday ruled that Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin overstepped when he revoked a plea deal that prosecutors reached with 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed.

Why it matters: After months of back and forth over the plea agreement, the ruling puts the proceedings back on track for a potential guilty plea hearing next week, the New York Times reported.

Catch up quick: Mohammed and two other alleged 9/11 plotters reached plea deals with the Pentagon in late July for their roles in the terrorist attack that killed almost 3,000 people.

  • The three men had been facing the death penalty. Under the deal, they agreed to plea guilty to war crimes in exchange for life sentences, per the Times.
  • However, Austin revoked the agreement in early August after news of the deal was met with outrage from families of the victims and some Republicans. His decision set in motion another round of litigation.
  • In November, a military judge ruled that the plea agreements for the three defendants were valid.
State of play: The U.S. Court of Military Commission noted Tuesday that as of the previous day, the court had denied the government's writ of mandamus and prohibition in the case of Mohammed and his co-defendants.

  • The appeals panel wrote in the decision that Austin had not had the authority to revoke the deals because the defendants had already "started performance" of the pretrial agreements, the Times reported.

  • The Pentagon did not immediately respond to Axios' request for comment on Tuesday.
What to watch: Prosecutors at the Pentagon will now have to decide whether to appeal the decision over the plea agreements via a higher court of appeal or proceed with plea-taking proceedings next month.

Go deeper: Accused 9/11 orchestrator's plea revoked
