ONGOING CRIME BREAKING NEWS!

Starting in January 2020, this thread is about the news as it breaks!

Bernard Madoff says he is dying and is asking a judge for compassionate release from prison, where he is serving 150 years for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, according to a Wednesday federal court filing.

Madoff, 81, has terminal kidney failure and a life expectancy of less than 18 months. When the court sentenced him, “it was clear that Madoff’s 150-year prison sentence was symbolic for three reasons: retribution, deterrence, and for the victims,” the court filing states. “This Court must now consider whether keeping Madoff incarcerated … is truly in furtherance of statutory sentencing goals and our society’s value and understanding of compassion.”

Madoff said in the request for compassionate release that he “does not dispute the severity of his crimes.”

IMO- stay in jail

This guy had no clue who he swiped off the street. He was looking for a woman to use for sex. He constantly was harassing and offering money to the women in his brother’s neighborhood for sex. No one would accept his lewd “offer”. I guess he thought going straight to a prostitute was beneath him…I don’t know. But, somehow he could reconcile just snatching someone off the street to rape. I’m praying for her safe recovery, but I’m afraid that she really fought him and in the process he killed her - probably choked her or smothered her trying to quiet her and stop her from fighting. But, LE was so quick to get and provide pictures of the abduction, and determine who the abductor was - even tracing the location of his phone at the time of the crime, I’m very curious as to why they haven’t been able to track other places his phone pinged during that time frame, or find more pictures of his vehicle In other locations.

He didn't get early parole. He had to serve a certain % of his term (80 or 85% I can't remember).
It is always that way. Why don't they just say 20 years instead of 25, etc. It would be far closer to the truth/honest. The minute they are sentenced to how many years, 1/3 or something like that is immediately knocked off.

Regardless, sentencing is way too light to begin with in many cases these days anyhow. Imo.

But Cleotha Abston isn't talking. He has the answer. And unfortunately I believe it will be recovering her body. Killers love to do it. It's the last thing they have control over. And it's very telling when a perpetrator won't talk. Silence speaks very loudly. He should still be in prison for a 24 yr sentence and an 11 yr sentence. IDK if they were concurrent. It happened in 2001. That's not 24 yrs. Early parole. Should have been in prison until 2025. Again. System fail.

Also, if he says where the body is, he'll be charged with murder. Now he only faces kidnapping charges.

That's early parole to me. Whats the point of sentencing them to a term and giving them those terms. Especially kidnapping. And he did it again. This time, Like so many others he escalated to killing.
Whatever they call it and however it is packaged and under what terminology, it all amounts to the same, they are out of prison. Parole, early release, amended sentences, same result wrapped up in different package names.

yeah, why not say he got 7.5 years rather than saying he got 10 with 25% knocked off for (insert reasoning)?

Yep and they know it going in. We were told in our case that they serve about 2/3. I was trying to cope with maybe having to deal with hearing a ten year sentence and then found out nope, ten years isn't ten years, etc. I was outraged and flabbergasted as I believe most are until they realize this is what goes on these days.

And he didn't even get double digits to begin with. For MURDER/HOMICIDE.

It's very possible they have more info and just aren't sharing it. I wonder if the SUV has GPS tracking in it.

I look at it this way. Had he done something to get in trouble in prison, the additional time could have been served.

I agree on the light sentencing.

Everything is so backwards though. Just give them the max and THEN let them earn MAYBE a bit of a reduction, instead it is if they get in trouble only will they serve their "true" sentence.
