3 children, 1 adult killed in shooting at Bend, Oregon, elementary school, sources say; suspect dead

At least three children and one adult were killed in a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, multiple law enforcement sources told CBS News. The suspect was shot and killed — possibly by a bystander, police said.

Bend Police communications manager Sheila Miller said in a news conference that at least two people were taken to St. Charles Medical Center and that "the victims include children." The total number of victims was not clear, Miller said.

Police received a call about a man shooting into a car just before 1 p.m. local time, Miller said. About a minute later, multiple 911 calls came in saying that person had entered the school and started shooting, police said in a statement.

Police arrived within 3 minutes and quickly reported that the shooter was dead. Miller said it was not clear who shot and killed the suspect, saying it "may have been a bystander." Sources told CBS News the shooter was believed to be a teenager who was killed by a good Samaritan.

Not surprised a good Samaritan stopped the shooter. Bend has a robust population of hunters.

Andrew Luster, the great-grandson of cosmetics mogul Max Factor, was released from state prison earlier this month and is reportedly residing in Glendora, California.
Mayor David Fredendall condemned the release in a statement obtained by Fox News Digital, calling it unacceptable that a convicted serial rapist is now reportedly living in the community.

Originally sentenced to 124 years, he is free after 20. Luster was convicted in 2003 of 86 felony counts stemming from the drugging and sexual assault of three women at his beachfront home in Ventura County. Prosecutors said he used the drug GHB to render the women unconscious before sexually assaulting them.

Luster fled to Mexico in January 2003 while free on $1 million bail during his trial. He was convicted in his absence and later captured by celebrity bounty hunter Duane "Dog" Chapman in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

His release has renewed criticism of California's criminal justice system, particularly Proposition 57, a voter-approved measure passed in 2016 that expanded parole consideration for certain offenders.

Dropping this in the crime thread for now. Not liking the lack of the most basic info on this one

4-year-old boy found dead in Atlanta; mother’s friend arrested

A woman was arrested Tuesday in east Georgia after Atlanta police found a 4-year-old boy dead while conducting a wellness check at a southwest Atlanta residence, officials said.

Jasmaine Smoak, 32, was taken into custody by the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office after Atlanta police used license plate reader technology to track her to Washington, about 110 miles east of Atlanta and roughly 50 miles northwest of Augusta.

She faces charges of second-degree cruelty to children and concealing the death of another, according to Atlanta police.

Family says brother of 4-year-old found dead in Atlanta home also seriously injured

Colby Walker, 4, was found dead Monday evening after Atlanta firefighters forced their way into a home on Cardinal Drive SW during a welfare check.
Kierra Barnes, who said she's the boys' cousin, told 11Alive on Tuesday that Colby's brother, Caydan, 5, also suffered serious injuries that the family believes were caused by abuse involving the same woman. Smoak is not the children's mother. Barnes said Smoak was watching the boys while their mother was in jail.

Serial killer Ted Bundy is linked to another Utah teenager’s 1974 killing through DNA testing

DNA connects serial killer Ted Bundy to the death of another Utah teenager, authorities announced Tuesday, exactly 52 years after her body was discovered in the woods by a hunter.

Bundy has been dead since 1989, but the tally of his confirmed victims continues to grow due to advances in DNA testing. He killed at least 30 women and girls in multiple states in the 1970s, and many more escaped or survived with injuries.

Investigators are satisfied that Bundy was responsible for killing 17-year-old Melissa Ann Smith in 1974, a death that had long been listed as a cold case, Summit County Attorney Margaret Olson said at a news conference.

They were able to close the case by making crucial connections with DNA found on Smith and Laura Aime, another Bundy victim whose case was resolved last April in Utah County. Bundy’s DNA was on file in Florida, where he was convicted and ultimately executed.
