Investigators confirmed to Channel 2’s Michael Doudna that Messiah Harris, who was about about to turn 3 in a few weeks, was found dead in the woods near the apartment complex on Ridge Run.

Police say Harris had likely been dead for “a considerable amount of time” by the time he was reported missing.

A man is now facing murder charges days after he was arrested and accused of concealing the death of 2-year-old Messiah Harris in the woods in Marietta, court records show.

The charges Keith faces in the indictment are malice murder, three counts of felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault and two counts of cruelty to children in the first degree. A Cobb County grand jury issued the true bill of indictment Thursday, records show.

Jesse Butler was charged with first-degree rape, domestic assault and battery by strangulation, attempted rape in the first degree and rape by instrumentation in March 2025

  • On Monday, Aug. 4, Jesse Mack Butler’s case was formally dismissed after he completed all of his probation requirements
  • Payne and Logan County District Attorney Jeremiah Gregory, who was not in office when Butler reached a plea deal, plans to submit the case to federal prosecutors for review
  • One victim’s family is considering a civil suit while Butler’s attorney seeks to have his record expunged
Butler, the son of a prominent local family, was arrested in March 2025, following a September 2024 investigation into reports of assault by two high-school students in Stillwater, Okla., according to an official report reviewed by PEOPLE.


Butler was 17 years old at the time of his arrest and was first charged as an adult, according to court documents cited by KOCO, before being downgraded to a youthful offender. He was charged with 11 separate counts, including first-degree rape, domestic assault and battery by strangulation, attempted rape in the first degree and rape by instrumentation, per court records.

Butler, now 19, pleaded no contest to 11 counts against him in August 2025. He was facing 78 years in prison for the convictions, but a judge ordered him to perform community service and attend counseling instead,

On Monday, Aug. 3, the case was formally dismissed during the final youthful offender review, one day before his 19th birthday. A judge ruled that Butler completed the terms of his probation, reports
