Northern Utah couple arrested for investigation of murder in neglect case of toddler

NIBLEY, Utah (KSL.com) — A Cache County couple has been arrested in connection with the death of their 18-month-old daughter, who investigators say was left alone most days and died due to complications from malnutrition and dehydration.

Mitchell Chesnut Murray and Carrie Marie Murray, both 31, were each booked into the Cache County Jail for investigation of aggravated murder and aggravated child abuse.

Ruby Marie Murray died on March 19. She weighed approximately 17 pounds at the time of her death. Her mother told police she found her daughter deceased in her crib, according to a police booking affidavit.

As emergency crews were responding, 911 dispatchers tried to get Carrie Murray to perform life-saving efforts, but “Carrie informed dispatch that she was a nurse and she believed the child to be beyond help,” the affidavit states. When paramedics arrived, they told police that they believed rigor mortis had already set in.

“Follow-up investigative steps conducted by the Cache County Sheriff’s Office identified a severe pattern of neglect leading up to the infant’s death,” the sheriff’s office said.

Using baby monitors and surveillance cameras, detectives learned that during the last four days of Ruby’s life, she was only out of her crib for a little more than six hours, and “the total time another human being was identified as being present with the child was 49 minutes and 15 seconds,” according to the sheriff’s office.

Investigators also identified just six diaper changes during those 96 hours.

Deputies further noted in the affidavit that “the child’s crib was in a bedroom where there was a space heater running, which was set to 68 degrees Fahrenheit and was noticeably warmer than the rest of the home.

“The interior of the crib was very dirty with old pieces of food. Underneath the mattress was trash, wrappers and … waffle particles,” according to the affidavit.

“The findings of the medical examiner confirmed that the infant died due to complications arising from malnutrition and dehydration,” the sheriff’s office said.

When questioned by detectives, Carrie Murray said the last time she saw her daughter before her death was on March 17, about 3 a.m., but did not see her on March 18 due to work.

“Carrie was asked by investigators about (Ruby’s) food and water intake and were informed (Ruby) was provided a sippy cup in the morning and the evening. Carrie also informed investigators that (Ruby) was usually fed waffles for all of her meals and she typically ate them in her crib because they are not table people and (Ruby) never liked someone to feed her,” the affidavit says.

Carrie Murray also admitted to not viewing the baby monitor app in months, according to investigators. When asked about the daily routine of her 4-year-old son, Murray allegedly told investigators she was unsure, including when he woke in the morning.

Mitchell Murray told police he works from home and is on his laptop a lot, both working and playing games on his PC when he is not working.

“Mitchell explained what he termed ‘crib days.’ He explained that crib days were days where (Ruby) remained in her crib all day while he worked. He claimed this would occur one to two days per week,” but he claimed he would check on her two or three times during the day, the affidavit alleges.

Investigators reviewed surveillance video from inside Ruby’s room for the final four days of her life. They found that during eight hours on March 14, Carrie and Mitchell Murray had 36 minutes of interaction with Ruby in her bedroom, gave her food once and changed her diaper once, according to the affidavit.

On March 15, Ruby was out of her crib for just under 90 minutes the entire day, investigators say.

“On March 16, there was footage of the entire day. … Review of that footage showed (Ruby) was allowed out of the crib for 4 hours and 44 minutes. The majority of that time (Ruby) was left alone on her bedroom floor. The total interaction Carrie, Mitchell and (their son) had with (Ruby) on March 16 was 9 minutes and 42 seconds,” according to the affidavit.

On March 17, Ruby was out of her crib for about five minutes for the entire day, for two diaper changes, the affidavit says.

Investigators say Ruby was never taken out of her crib on March 18.

“The total interaction Carrie, Mitchell and (their son) had with (Ruby) on March 18 was 49 seconds. (Her) diaper was not changed on March 18,” according to the arrest report.

Detectives who watched all four days of the video surveillance footage also noted that Ruby “did not exhibit normal sleeping patterns for a child and did not seem to differentiate night from day. It was also observed that there was loud rock/pop music played through the Amazon Alexa in (Ruby’s) room that appeared to interfere with her ability to sleep at times,” the affidavit says.

During a second interview, Carrie Murray allegedly admitted that she and Mitchell Murray interacted with Ruby even less during the previous fall, that they bathed her about once a week, and that Ruby had only eaten baby food once or twice and mainly received waffles, quesadillas or a sippy cup, according to the affidavit. She also stated that Ruby needed music to sleep and Green Day and Fall Out Boy would typically be played in her room all night.

The sheriff’s office alleges that the Murrays showed “a depraved indifference to human life, and knowingly engaged in conduct that created a grave risk of death” to Ruby, “thereby causing her death by failing to provide her with the appropriate nutrition and hydration leading to her death from dehydration and undernutrition.”
I knew they were arrested, I am pretty sure it stated that in the video I linked. And all of this, she was probably going by the filing in fact. It does say "her" son as far as the brother and she didn't know much about his care either. I think he probably survived just somehow despite their lack of care or maybe they were a bit better with him. This is absolutely horrible, that poor baby, her entire short life was spent alone basically. The food, etc. in her crib and underneath her mattress shows imo that they never changed the bedding AND if they hardly ever changed her diaper, I imagine it the crib was probably also urine, etc. soaked, although with little to seat or drink, she probably didn't go much. And then the music and the heat, just awful. Why do people like this even have kids??!!

This is the atty's press conference in follow-up to what the Austin PD said the other day about the death of the Texas A & M student. LE is saying suicide, parents are saying no way and got well known atty Buzbee. There ARE serious questions in this one, not sure what to think...

Summary

  • A final report into an Army spy operating at heart of the IRA during the Troubles in Northern Ireland has been published
  • Freddie Scappaticci, who the Army gave the codename 'Stakeknife', was a member of the IRA but was also feeding information to the Army
  • Scappaticci was linked to 14 murders and 15 abductions; he worked in a ruthless IRA unit known as the "nutting squad"
  • MI5 has been accused of attempting to "conceal the truth" about the links it had with Stakeknife
  • Today's report has also found no evidence UK security-forces co-operated with the UVF to carry out the 1974 Dublin and Monaghan bombings
  • The Glenanne gang was a loyalist paramilitary group responsible for the Dublin Monaghan bombings in which 33 people were killed, among other attacks

I haven't finished this yet but will, watched a fair part of it. I wonder how many cases we never even hear of? The thought is scary.

Another hot car death. 20 year old mom. Two sons, age 2 and 1. The 2 year old recovered. The 1 year old died. The reason it says lip filler is that is what she was doing when they were in the car, getting her lips filled. FFS. (I never used to swear like this but the more crime I've followed, I've come to where I have to sometimes). To her credit one would think she per the prosecutor's opening, asked the lip filling place if she could bring her kids in before she even went to the appt. She was told she could, they'd just need to "hang out" in the lobby. Prosecutor says even so, she decided to leave them in the car. Clinic was behind by maybe 2 hours. She chose to hang inside talking to other people, even watching another mom's child for her while hers were in the car. Never checked on them ONCE. She did leave the car on with AC supposedly but it is set to shut off after an hour or the car to shut off or some such. Prosecutor says she chose herself and to take a break from her kids rather than bring them in. Law and Crime says too she texted others to see if they could watch them and sounds like a few people agreed (before she went to the appt). Why DO THAT and then not take them up on it or bring the kids in with you??? Prosecutor says selfish, just didn't want to, wanted some "me" time I guess.

She is young, only 20 and her kids aren't very old but STILL...! Bakersfield CA, 100 degrees or over that day.

I'll go back to it in a bit...

I remember this. My mom even knew details about this. And true crime wasn't her interest. I remember the smoking also. Such a sad case. I can't believe it's been 25 years. It's a very haunting case.

Current trial. Not sure if livestreamed anywhere.

This was just opening statements, from yesterday I think.

She "looks" sad, remorseful and she's so young.

BUT while opening statements aren't evidence, the P claims there is a lot of evidence that will be shown including for one even in the clinic, she took a seat which would put her back to her car... She could have brought them in, was told that before ever going to the appt., she could have sat in the car WITH them, she never checked on them in something like 2.5 hours. A guy took his dog out for a walk, he decided it was too hot to take a walk and took his dog back in for water.

She has four charges, the biggest being 2nd degree murder. The D and her are supposedly conceding to manslaughter and I think the lower charges but not the 2nd degree murder charge.

I doubt she wanted the children to die but she sure showed a serious disregard for them. I do think she thought the car would stay running, although it isn't tried yet, an I can't know that but she allegedly did leave it running with the air on in it. But not check, and putting her back to the car, AND she allegedly helped watch someone else's kid who was in the clinic! She just didn't want to bring them in with her I guess.

I was a young mother. Had one at 18, my other at 22. Never ever would I have done that and in fact, if they weren't in a crib asleep, never would I not worry if they were out of my sight.

She did leave them with snacks, each a bottle of milk, and gave her phone allegedly to the oldest, the 2 year old, so he could play on it. The D atty said she breast fed each, fed them that day breakfast, and then lunch. That sounds like a good mom in that regard yet she did this.

Oh and she found them when she went out to her car to get her phone to pay so even at that point, her purpose wasn't to check on them necessarily.

I think they said (the D maybe?) she was hysterical on finding them, calling 911 and rushing them into the clinic where she had her appt. She did CPR with guidance from 911 and there was a nurse at the clinic of course but again this is a cosmetic clinic.

Just really, really bad choices boy. She has to live with the fact her son is deceased. I'd like to hear from her but that's always doubtful with a defendant. I think in an interview with LE she admitted to knowing a hot car can kill a child, etc. She allegedly left it on though...

I don't like this feature of the car shutting off when you did not turn it off. NOT that she should have left them at all, but it's a bad feature. I think it was the same in the dad playing video games and watching porn hot car case. He allegedly left the car and AC on BUT it too turned off if I recall correctly. I never knew of such a feature until hearing that case and now this one.

Sad.

Bondi Beach is an iconic beach destination in Sydney and is a well known Australian location. This has shocked Australians.

One of the suspects in the Bondi Beach terrorist incident is in custody and named and one is dead. A vehicle rigged with explosives was also found.

Twelve people are dead after a mass shooting at Bondi Beach, where two men have stood on a pedestrian bridge and opened fire on families and crowds gathered in the areas below.
One of the gunmen is among the fatalities, according to police. Another 29 people have been injured, including two police officers.
Videos and witness accounts have been shared widely. This is what they tell us about how the terrorist attack unfolded.
Witnesses who were in the North Bondi area told ABC News that early on Sunday evening they heard several loud bangs before seeing people around them injured and bleeding.
Further towards the south end of the beach, witness Marley Carroll said he heard two loud bangs before “a rush of people” ran towards him.
“They were running away from the shooter to us,” he said.
“That’s when we realised everyone around us was just running and people were running on the roads, car horns going off, people were crying and I recall a group of girls running past us saying, ‘He’s shooting people, he’s shooting people.’”

Gunmen open fire at Bondi Beach.
Police said they started to receive reports of shots being fired at an area called Archer Park in Bondi Beach at 6:47pm AEDT.
Around the same time, mobile phones in Sydney’s east started to light up as friends and family urgently asked one another: “Are you in Bondi?”
In the popular Facebook group Bondi Local Loop, where more than 150,000 members post about beach parties and selling pot plants, desperate messages started to emerge: “What on Earth is going on at the beach?”
Then videos started to circulate among locals.
In footage that has now been independently verified by the ABC, two men can be seen standing on the cement pedestrian bridge at the northern end of the beach, firing towards crowds.
There are several angles of the attack from the footbridge, including from a drone that was overhead at the time.

On a Sunday afternoon in the middle of summer, Bondi Beach is incredibly beautiful and incredibly popular. At the northern end, crowds settle in for sunset on the beach, in the park and on the hill that provides a view of it all.
There is an area often used for festivals and events, as well as a children’s playground.
To get to the northern end of the world-famous beach, pedestrians can cross a cement bridge that moves them from the main street that runs the length of the beach, Campbell Parade, over car parks to the grassy areas, the sand and eventually the sea.
This is a path well trodden by Bondi Beach goers.
But on Sunday afternoon, two men stood on that footbridge with firearms and killed multiple people and injured dozens more.
In the area in front of them, a Jewish festival was being held. The Chanukah by the Sea event was reportedly attended by families, and officials have said at least one child has been injured.
Sunday is the first day of Chanukah, or Hanukkah, an eight-day Jewish festival of lights.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the shooting was a “targeted attack on Jewish Australians on the first day of Hanukkah”.

In the area under the footbridge were parked cars where the ABC understands people were taking shelter.
A video shows that sometime before 7:30pm one of the gunmen had moved off the bridge onto the footpath level and was rushed by a member of the public.
In the footage, a man can be seen creeping up behind the gunman, before grabbing the firearm and turning it on the attacker.
This man has been hailed a hero, single-handedly disarming one of the gunmen and putting himself in harm’s way to do it.

By 7:30pm, a video of two men lying face down on the footbridge was shared among locals.
In the video, the men are not moving and police are attempting to handcuff them as locals film the scene and scream at the gunmen who have just devastated a community and a city.
There has been a mammoth response in Bondi, with locals, tourists and lifeguards tending to the injured. Locals have offered those stuck in the area their living rooms to sit and wait and talk.
Bondi Lifeguards posted on social media saying that while the terrorist attack was underway, they were still rescuing people from the waves out at sea.
Dozens of police and ambulance units responded, with a massive operation underway for hours after the shooting stopped.

Authorities cordoned off a wide area around Bondi Beach, stopping cars entering the area. They were warning that while one gunmen was dead and the other in custody, they believed there was a threat from improvised explosive device in their vehicle at the scene.
At 9:36pm AEDT police designated this event as a terrorist attack.
“I have also authorised special powers ... to ensure that if there is a third offender, and we are currently investigating that at the moment, we will make sure that we prevent any further activity,” NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said.
At about the same time, one of the gunmen was named as Naveed Akram.
By 11pm AEDT police confirmed the explosive material had been secured and relocated, and while there was no longer an active operation, the site was now officially a crime scene.
