Former first lady Jill Biden's ex-husband has been charged with murdering his wife following an "extensive weeks-long investigation," police in Delaware announced on Tuesday.
Police officers responding to a "reported domestic dispute" at a home in the Wilmington community of Oak Hill on Dec. 28 found Linda Stevenson, 64, unresponsive on the living room floor, according to police. Her husband, William "Bill" Stevenson, had called 911, police said at the time.

A grand jury in New Castle County on Monday indicted Stevenson, 77, with first-degree murder in connection with his wife's death, according to police.
The indictment alleges he "did intentionally cause the death" of his wife.
Detectives took Stevenson into custody at his home without incident, police said. He has since been arraigned and is being held in the Howard Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington after failing to post $500,000 bail, police said.
It is unclear if Stevenson has an attorney.

Officers responded to the Stevensons' home after 11 p.m. on Dec. 28 and attempted lifesaving measures, but Linda Stevenson was later pronounced dead, police said.

Detectives from the New Castle County Police Department's Criminal Investigations Unit responded to the scene to assume the investigation, officials said.
No additional details, including the cause of death, have been released.

Linda Stevenson ran a bookkeeping business and was "deeply family-oriented," according to her obituary, which did not mention her husband.
Bill Stevenson founded a popular bar and music hall in the early 1970s in Newark, Delaware. He is the former husband of Jill Biden, the Delaware Department of Justice confirmed to ABC News. The two were married for five years before divorcing in 1975.
Jill Biden married former President Joe Biden two years later, in 1977.

June Bunyan had a love of adventure.
Brought up on a Scottish island, in 2023 she moved to California, where she wanted to pursue her dream of becoming a defence attorney.
The law graduate had also met Los Angeles resident Jonathan Renteria, 25, online through a shared interest in martial arts.
They married, and in July 2025 the couple had a baby daughter called Regina.
Back home on Arran, June's mother Jill Bunyan spoke to her daughter regularly. She said June seemed happy and was "ecstatic" about the arrival of her baby.
But less than two months after Regina was born, 37-year-old June's dismembered body was found at her flat in LA. Her husband was charged with her murder.
He had pleaded not guilty and his lawyer has suggested he may have been experiencing psychosis at the time.
Warning: This article contains details that some readers may find disturbing
Sitting in her living room, Jill Bunyan describes June as "bright as a button and easy to love."
She wants to know the truth about what happened to her daughter and is upset that the court process could take two years.

"It's two years you can't grieve, it's two years you can't move on, it's two years you're just waiting," she says.
"We're in hell. This is a nightmare. I've got a cabinet full of tablets to keep myself going."
To compound her grief, Jill has had no contact with baby Regina since June's death – and is devastated that her daughter's belongings have disappeared.
"I lost my daughter. Right now I can't see my granddaughter and I have not one thing, not one possession of my daughter's - and I want to know why," says Jill.
She faces expensive legal battles in the US to seek custody of Regina and to sue Renteria in relation to her daughter's missing property. The family has set up a crowdfunder to cover costs.

Jill says she would love her granddaughter to come to Scotland.
She believes Regina is currently in the care of Renteria's parents but BBC News has been unable to verify this.
"Right now, if I'm honest, I would like Regina to be in care until the court can look into me, look into his parents, they do some investigations into us all, and then they decide in fairness," says Jill.
June set up a paralegal service after she moved to LA. But her ultimate aim was to pass the US bar exam so she could practise law in California.
Shortly after she started her relationship with Renteria, June filed a restraining order against him citing domestic violence. That claim was later dropped.

June's body was found on 11 September last year. Jill believes she had been killed a week earlier and is desperate to know what happened during this time.
Police went to June's flat after Renteria was discovered injured in a hotel room alongside a note where he confessed to killing her.
Jill wants the details about what happened to her daughter in the public domain.
Officers discovered June's torso with missing limbs. The autopsy says the cause of death was traumatic neck injuries and that June suffered approximately 10 "sharp force injuries." One of her arms has never been recovered.
Jill believes baby Regina was in the apartment when June was killed.

The lack of documents in June's home when her body was found made it harder for the US authorities to identify her and she was initially classed as a "Jane Doe" - something Jill finds especially upsetting.
A police document seen by BBC Scotland News suggests that three months after June was killed, police recovered her passport and other paperwork from Renteria's parents. We don't know when or how June's passport may have come into the possession of the Renterias.
Jill says the missing passport delayed the repatriation of her daughter's body: "All the hoops we had to jump through would have been so much easier if we'd had June's passport."
BBC News attempted to contact Renteria's parents to ask them about June's passport and whether they have custody of baby Regina.
Jonathan Renteria's lawyer told us the family would not be answering any of BBC News' questions.

Renteria has pled not guilty to murder and a court hearing in California is expected next month.
The Los Angeles Police Department declined to provide a statement in relation to the investigation and the District Attorney did not respond to our request for information about the prosecution of Renteria.
Jill says she wants her daughter to be remembered as "very beautiful, very intelligent, very funny, humorous, crazy, kind, loving, passionate".
She visits June's grave in Arran nearly every day and says she finds comfort speaking to her daughter.
"I know we're never going to ger her back, ever, but I just need to know what happened to her...
"June deserved better. Way better."

A woman who moved to the U.S. to pursue her dream of becoming a defense attorney was killed and dismembered by her husband in Hollywood, according to authorities.
According to a GoFundMe page, 37-year-old June Bunyan took the bar exam in the U.S. and moved from the U.K. to pursue a legal career.
“June was known for her vibrant personality, infectious laugh, and deeply compassionate heart,” according to the page. “Exceptionally accomplished, she held multiple degrees, but her proudest achievement was earning her law degree.”
On Sept. 11, Ventura County Sheriff’s Department deputies were summoned to a motel room in Newbury Park after workers entered one of the rooms and discovered a suicide note that included a homicide confession and a man in the bathtub who had slit wrists but was alive, according to a search warrant affidavit filed by Los Angeles police.
The man in the bathtub was identified as Jonathan Renteria, 25, and in his note he mentioned his siblings and 1-month-old child, and confessed to killing Bunyan, the affidavit said.
Deputies alerted the Los Angeles Police Department, which sent officers to an apartment in the 5300 block of Franklin Avenue in Hollywood.
With the door locked, the officers opened a window to get inside and “were immediately met with the smell of decomposing flesh,” the affidavit said.
Inside, officers found Bunyan’s dismembered body in the kitchen, according to the affidavit. They continued to search the apartment — looking for the couple’s child — and found a trash bag in the bathroom with arms and legs inside, the document said. The officers did not locate the couple’s child or Renteria’s siblings.
Renteria was eventually booked on suspicion of murder, police said. He was also charged with mutilation, dismemberment and sexual contact with human remains.
According to court records obtained by ABC7, Bunyan and Renteria were married for a year and had a 1-month-old baby.
Renteria allegedly told prosecutors in a recorded interview that he got into a fight with his wife about her “failure to lose weight following her pregnancy,” and that she told him he’d never see their daughter again, ABC7 reported. He “admits to putting the victim in a rear naked chokehold” and killing her.

McDonald says no information to suggest suspect bullied in schoolpublished at 20:30

We can bring you a bit more from the press conference with deputy commissioner Dwayne McDonald now.

A reporter asked McDonald if he could talk about "any information you have regarding Jesse experiencing bullying at the school [or] any sort of difficulty at the school because of the transition from male to female".

McDonald said he had no information to suggest this was the case, but Jesse Van Rootselaar dropped out of school around four years ago and wasn't attending school.

The deputy commissioner was then asked why police waited so long to confirm the identity of the suspect.

McDonald said this was because they needed to ensure their information was accurate. They also needed to locate the next of kin of the deceased suspect, he added.

That is the end of our coverage of this briefing, and we will bring you a recap shortly.

A little more detail on the victims now, which is different to some of the information we heard earlier in the press conference.

There were two people, McDonald says, that were airlifted to hospital. He gives no update on their condition.

A police official then gives an update on the deceased. In the school they are:

A 39-year-old female educatorThree female students, all aged 12Two male students, one aged 12 and the other 13

The deceased in the residence are:

One 39-year-old female, the mother of the suspectAn 11-year-old boy, the step-brother of the suspect

McDonald says there is no information at this point to suggest that any of the victims in the school were specifically targeted.

He says that police are still notifying families of the victims. Most of the victims were "quite young", he continues, and most were born in 2012 and 2013.

The majority of those who were injured did not sustain gunshot wounds, he says, but will not speculate on further details.

Incident at the residence occurred first, says officerpublished at 20:13

20:13

Giving more details about the shooting of the suspect's family members at a local residence, McDonald says the police were called to this scene after they were called to the school.

The police were called by a young female at around 13:47 local time, McDonald says.

Officers were called because a young female at the home went to her neighbours. This female was a family member of the victims at the home and the suspect, he explains.

The incident at the home occurred first, then the suspect went to the school, he tells the press.

20:08

McDonald says the police "don't have an idea yet" as to what the suspect's motive was, and that it's something investigators are "passionately pursuing".

The officer is asked where in the school the victims were killed. He says one victim was found dead in the stairwell, and the rest were located in the school's library.

Asked to comment on the environment of the suspect's family home, McDonald says he cannot comment at this point.

Wow. We usually get the attention (negative) for such crimes, Canada, wow.

Yeah it's unusual. The shooter, who was a male transitioning to female, killed two family members at home before heading to the school where 5 kids and a teacher were shot before killing him/herself. But some other kids were hurt some other way which isnt yet explained in the article. I was thinking perhaps crush injuries.
