Tanner is missing with his brothers, Alexander and Andrew. Their mother, Tanya Lynn Zuvers Skelton, had filed for divorce from their father, John Russell Skelton, in September 2010 and had custody of the boys.

John took them for a court-ordered visitation over Thanksgiving, and never returned them. That last time anyone besides John saw them was at 5:00 p.m. on November 25, the day before their disappearances were reported.

John stated he gave the boys to a woman named Joann Taylor, whom he had met on the internet several years before, and asked her to return them to their mother. He said he did this because he planned to commit suicide and didn't want the boys to see it. He stated Joann was married to a pastor named Mark, drove a white or silver minivan and lived in either Hillsdale, Michigan or Jackson County, Michigan.

John attempted to hang himself later that day, but survived and was hospitalized, first at a general hospital and then at a psychiatric facility in Ohio.

Authorities issued an Amber Alert for the Skelton brothers, but they could find no sign of them and no indication that Joann Taylor even existed. Police said they believed the boys were in "grave danger." They said they believed John's story about Joann Taylor was fictitious and something else caused the Skelton children's disappearances.

Investigators stated they were investigating the disappearances as homicides, and John was the prime suspect. They said John's blue Dodge Caravan was on the Ohio Turnpike, along the Michigan-Ohio border, between 4:00 and 7:00 a.m. on November 26, and asked anyone who saw it to come forward. It has the Michigan license plate number 9JQ H93.

John has stated his children are still alive but will never be returned as long as their mother has custody of them. His relatives and Tanya don't believe he would have harmed them.

Mother of three boys missing since 2010 asks court to declare them legally dead

The mother of the missing Morenci boys is asking a court to declare the brothers legally dead.

No one has seen Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton since Thanksgiving of 2010. Their father, John Skelton, is behind bars on an unlawful imprisonment charge.

This declaration of death is being sought by the boys’ mother, Tanya Zuvers. This filing for a petition for declaration of death was filed in Lenawee County Probate Court in December 2023. Both sides have already been in court. A pretrial is set for next Thursday and a trial on the declaration is set for the end of July.

Michigan law says anyone missing for five years is presumed to be dead.

Missing Skelton boys: Trial date set for mother wishing for court to declare them dead

The mother of the Skelton brothers - missing since 2010 - wants the court to declare them legally dead.

On Thursday Tanya Zuvers moved one step closer with a pretrial hearing to declare Andrew, Alexander, and Tanner deceased in Lenawee County Probate Court.

"This decision came after much thought and discussion with my family and friends. It did not come lightly and was definitely a difficult decision to make. No parent wants to lose a child, but to have to have the courts step in and declare them deceased is just unfathomable," Zuvers wrote in a statement last week.

Judge Sala set the case for a trial, starting July 29th.

There is no way in hl that those 3 boys are with the Amish. Any Amish, or other Anabaptists, anywhere. Not in the U.S., not In Canada, not in Central America. Not the Schwartzentruber, not the Old Order, or any of the others. Or Hutterites. Or Mennonites.

That sperm donor referred to as an alleged father needs an electric cattle prod applied far up his posterior. Repeatedly.

Some cases totally enrage me, and this is one of them.

I can only hope that once they are officially declared dead, he can be arrested and prosecuted for murder.

Their poor mother.

America's Lost Children: 37 Active AMBER Alerts Still Haunt Families

The first AMBER Alert was issued in 1996. The notification, which stands for America's Missing Broadcast Emergency Response, has recovered at least 1,074 abducted children around the country.

Throughout the years, however, not all missing children are found and there are still 37 active alerts.

"Obviously we would want ever case of a missing child to be resolved and for the child to be recovered alive," Alan Nanavaty, executive director of special programs the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children missing children division, told Newsweek.

The alerts serve as just one tool to help find missing children. Last year alone, Nanavaty said her organization had 20,000 children missing reported to the organization. Around 90% of those children were found.

"Since we've been tracking AMBER Alerts, since early 2005 timeframe, 99% of the children have been recovered," Nanavaty said. "It's not a good or bad thing. It's just what it is, and law enforcement continues to work on the cases."

"I think in terms of the AMBER Alert being used or activated at this point on these cases, the value diminishes over time. However, there are still things that can be done," Nanavaty said. "The most important part is locating that child as quickly as possible and bringing them home safely."

2010 Amber Alerts

Alexander, Alexander and Tanner Skelton disappeared from Morenci, Michigan. Their father claimed they were given to an underground sanctuary to protect them from their mother. Officials didn't believe him and charged him with child abandonment. He was sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison and is scheduled to be released November 2025.

Their mother announced this week that she wants the court to declare them legally dead.

Judge's illness postpones hearing to have missing Skelton boys declared legally dead

A Lenawee County probate court hearing scheduled for Monday to have three boys missing since 2010 declared legally dead was postponed by at least a day after the judge overseeing the case fell ill.

The probate court clerk in Lenawee County, Heidi Ross, confirmed Monday morning the hearing would not go forward as planned because of Judge Catherine Sala's illness. It was originally scheduled to take place over four days, on Monday and Tuesday as well as Nov. 4 and 5. Around 8 a.m. Monday, she said the status of Tuesday's hearing was not yet clear.

Skelton is currently serving a 10-to 15-year sentence for unlawful imprisonment, having been charged the year after they disappeared. He is scheduled to be released in November 2025.

"At the end of the day, one person is responsible for the disappearance of my sons," said the family statement. "That person, at one point, claimed the boys would hibernate until they graduate. As of today, June 14, 2024, all 3 boys are over 18 and all would have graduated high school, yet they have not been returned to me and are still missing."

Makes ne so angry he is getting away with this!!!! Gave them to an underground agency. RIIIGHT!!!! Why couldn't they get him with a heftier charge when he couldn't prove it?! Ridiculous!!!
Yes there's a total lack of justice for these boys here. Now a judge is sick and after a long wait, they still won't be declared dead before he gets out most likely.

They've been missing for FOURTEEN YEARS! Uhm how long does it take to figure they're dead? Not a one of THREE has surfaced. DUH.

Just an illness by a judge, if even true one never knows do they, upsets the entire already bogged down and ridiculously run court system. Some other judge should have been able to take over. I don't care if the judge has sat on the case or not. They should be looking at the facts presented anyhow and any learned judge should be able to do that. They aren't alive. Period. No underground agency has them, RIDICULOUS.

Barry Morphew had Suzanne declared dead in short order, now that's ridiculous when the perp can do so and in short order but a grieving family/victims can't... I think that says it all in how backwards THAT is.

Hearing to declare missing Skelton brothers legally dead postponed

An evidentiary hearing in the Lenawee County District Court to determine if three brothers should be declared legally dead after they went missing from Morenci, Mich., more than a decade ago has been postponed to mid-December.

The hearing for Andrew, Alexander and Tanner Skelton was originally scheduled for Oct. 28 and 29 but was postponed to Dec. 11, 12, 13 and 16 at 9 a.m. "due to illness," according to court documents.

I think I posted this before. Could legally declaring them dead be the first step in filing murder charges, even if their bodies have not been found?
All would be over the age of 18. If they were alive, they would have come forward by now.

there seems to be an underlying hint of that and i'd agree imo, in the links and hints in the family statement.

wanting them declared dead is certainly not to bury them or collect becaus there are no bodies and nothing to collect and so, it goes to reason it is a step so I agree with you, I sense that too although it is not outright said as far as I recall.

and yeah, sure a judge can get sick at any given time but I have trouble with conincidence...

A long awaited and scheduled hearing and boom...

these boys have been missing since 2010, 14 years ago this November... THREE boys there has been no finding or sighting of and all have been over 18 for a time now, even the youngest... the odds that if alive one would not have found some way to contact, etc. are non-existent imo.

Eldest was 9 when they "disappeared" and would have a very good understanding and memory at that age...

I don't think there's much doubt here with most of us as to the who and that they are not alive. And they need to give the family (not him) some closure and answers. They are imo definitely deceased.
True or false with the illness of the judge, this should have proceeded imo.

Not into conspiracies generally but come on already, this is long awaited, no answers and seems a bit hokey.

Missing Skelton brothers: As anniversary of disappearance nears, so does father's prison release date

Nov. 26 marks 14 years since the Skelton brothers disappeared without a trace.

John Skelton is in prison currently for unlawful imprisonment of his sons. He's been denied parole repeatedly, but can only be locked up for another year. He's set to be released on Nov. 29, 2025.

Late last year, Zuvers took steps to have her boys declared dead by filing a request in Lenawee County Probate Court.

In Michigan, a person is typically considered to be dead after they have been missing for five years.

"This decision came after much thought and discussion with my family and friends. It did not come lightly and was definitely a difficult decision to make. No parent wants to lose a child, but to have to have the courts step in and declare them deceased is just unfathomable," Zuvers wrote in a statement over the summer.

The case is still moving through the court system.
