El Paso family asks for help finding woman missing in Houston

An El Paso family is asking for the public’s help in finding a 24-year-old woman who was last seen in Houston earlier this month.

Sydney Marquez was reported missing after she was last seen on Dec. 11 in the 9100 block of Bellaire Boulevard, according to Houston police.

“This happened on December 11th. We heard from her friend that Sydney was missing and she never went back to the hotel room where they were staying,” Sydney’s sister Clarissa Marquez said.

Clarissa Marquez said the family traveled to Houston immediately and began searching for answers, speaking with local businesses and requesting surveillance video in the area where Sydney was last seen.

“We were trying to get camera footage. Local businesses were very supportive,” Marquez said. “Social media, Facebook groups, Instagram and TikTok have really been helping us.”

The family said they later learned Sydney’s vehicle had been left on Rochester Street near Bellaire Boulevard and that video showed her walking along the roadway.

“That area is not a good area to be in,” Marquez said.

Marquez said her sister left behind her belongings, including clothing, electronic devices and makeup. She added that her sister was clinically diagnosed bipolar, which concerns the family because they’re worried someone could be taking advantage of her.

“That’s not normal. You don’t just not go back to your hotel room,” she said.

Do we know she didn't? Or have someone waiting, etc.?

I get what you are saying but they can't make an adult do any such thing. Again she broke no law and had every right to do as she pleased and they had no reason for a mental health, etc. hold apparently.
If they believed she was vulnerable or at risk then that is exactly what they should do IMO.

I just noticed the heading "bipolar disorder". Does she suffer from that?

I will add this much. If something happens again like in the family I don't think the support would be the same or if she needs help. Sure, depending on, maybe some would still rally, but not all are going to in the same way imo. It's a bit of like calling wolf.

Maybe her parents were overbearing or there was something else wrong but it does also come down to a very immature choice in she couldn't even let them know she was safe even IF NOT giving away her location, early on. She went missing on the 11th of LAST month. It's very immature imo to do that to anyone including all the loved ones.

Maybe you don't think you'd be allowed to leave or leave your phone, then fine, do it and within as quick as you can tell them so they at least know you are alive. Tell them you are leaving, they can try calling the cops but that you are 24, you can make any choice you like if legal, and if you call LE and they find you, you still are not coming back, and even less likely to do so. Let them at least know you are alive, tell them you are leaving, you are past old enough, you are sorry but they aren't letting you grow up/do your own thing, whatever.

You want to make a stand and insist you are a grown up then ACT like one. You are 24 it is well past time isn't it?

Many of them come running right back to ma and pa the minute they need money or something goes wrong... It doesn't seem very well thought out or mature but then she may well have had to leave one person for another. I don't know all the details or ins and outs here. Not all were shared.

I have no idea if she suffers from that. I only heard the overview of the case if I recall, thought there should be a thread as seemed similar to Camila and she went missing also in TX. If they knew she had such though, I'd imagine she was treated for it and has meds for it.

They can't just do whatever with anyone who didn't break the law and she declined help the way it sounds and I'm not even sure she needed help. They offered her a room and whatever else it was and she declined. She'd been gone since the 11th and it is now January and I'd imagine she was staying somewhere. Who knows, maybe even with another family member, a good friend, a bf. We just don't know and are not apt to.

If they couldn't 5150 her (mental health hold), then there's little they could do. Since they did offer a room and such, it is very likely they asked her if she had a ride, a place to stay and maybe they did suggest she have someone she trusted come get her for all we know. They probably did show compassion, offer, but they can't make her do anything. I just don't see what more they could do in such a situation. In fact, she didn't even ever have to let them nor her parents know she was okay.

No I don't know but it sounds like she just wanted to do her own thing but as she has bipolar disorder, i guess she may not always make good decisions.
That's still not enough reason to hold her, only if she were a danger to herself or others, etc., then they could do a 3 day mental health hold. Since they didn't, she was obviously fine in that respect, probably was on her meds if she has such, and so on. It IS likely though they used the bipolar to be able to put out a more urgent "missing" notice for her. That's likely the only reason that was even shared, or her parents may have shared it.

Updated article.

The update comes three weeks after Sydney was first reported missing in Houston, with surveillance footage tracing her to a shopping center near the 9100 block of Bellaire Blvd. The 24-year-old reportedly left behind her phones, clothes and makeup in her car near the city’s Chinatown neighborhood.

The AWARE Foundation Inc. shared 24-year-old Sydney Marquez has been located safe in a Facebook post on Friday morning.
The AWARE Foundation Inc.
Sydney, an El Paso native, had been in Houston visiting a friend. New footage released Friday placed Sydney at Harwin Drive on Dec. 12 at approximately 12:27 a.m. Her father, Raul Marquez, told NewsNation his daughter should’ve made a left turn to head towards her hotel, but instead she continued westbound.
Mark Edwards, field operations manager with Texas Equusearch—a nonprofit search and recovery organization assisting in the investigation—told NewsNation that Sydney's car appeared to have mechanical issues on the night she went missing, with surveillance footage capturing the Texas A&M grad walking at least 2 miles from where her vehicle was recovered.

Texas Equusearch said Sydney suffers from mental illness, which made the search for her even more urgent. The organization did not immediately respond to Chron’s request for comment on her recovery, but said a team member would follow up.
Authorities have not released additional details about where Sydney was found or the circumstances of her disappearance. The Houston Police Department and Jersey Village Police Department have not yet provided comment.

It wants me to subscribe. I tried to get around it a couple of times but couldn't. The headline though says she is safe in Houston.
Yes it did me too, so that's why i posted the chron.com article which i could copypasta. Its basically the same info but a bit more detail. They seem to know which hotel she is at and she possibly had car trouble and then walked 2 miles to find her hotel but missed a turn. That's my interpretation anyway. She does have MH problems so i understand relatives' concerns.

She did not meet criteria to put a hold on her. I don't know what else to say other than reading between the lines here, ,this family is desperately trying to get her back under their control. The parents did not want the Jersey PD talk with her shown so one can surmise from that it doesn't help their cause perhaps.

It is concerning she left her car, was seen going the wrong way allegedly instead fo to her hotel that night and any parent would be concerned, I sure would be, but she was found safe. She CLEARLY wants no contact with her parents and she IS 24. She has that right. Despite their concern all these weeks, LE talked to her and she had not perished and survived those weeks apparently just fine. Despite her issues and that's if all are true, she IS an adult and she has a right to her independence from them. They may well spend a lifetime worrying about her and maybe with real reason, but it is impossible to say, and I do feel for them if that's the case.

They really had no right either for police not to release the video, they are fortunate they considered their feelings, but if they keep making accusations, I would not be surprised if it ends up released so they can show what was said, how they responded, etc.

If there is one thing that is clear it is that their daughter does not want contact with them. She has that right. And even IF she is ever put on any kind of hold, she still would not have to have contact with them.

As sad as it is, they may need to accept that and ask themselves why that is.

I'm not going to comment on this further as the case is now resolved. She has a car, a hotel, a friend she was visiting so that all now seems resolved. The article has an instagram pic of her, posted by her sister, with RESOLVED across it so that seems to finalize it too.

Yeah, it seems to be resolved other than her parents do not want to accept it.
