Sky was last seen in Bellevue, Washington on November 6, 2011. His mother, Julia V. Biryukova, said he got sick and she was driving him and his four-year-old sister to Overlake Hospital Medical Center in her brother's silver 1998 Acura when it ran out of gas in the 2600 block of 112th Avenue northeast.

Biryukova left Sky strapped in a car seat in the unlocked vehicle, took his sister and walked to a gas station a mile away for help. When she arrived, she didn't buy gas, but instead called a friend who dropped her off at the car about an hour after she'd left it. By this time, Sky was gone. He has never been heard from again.

An extensive search of the area turned up no indication of Sky's whereabouts. Authorities did find a toddler's shoe but later determined it wasn't his.

Biryukova did not have a gas can with her when she called the police at 9:50 a.m. to report her son's disappearance. Police learned that the car had not, in fact, run out of gas and had no mechanical problems. Witnesses said they'd seen the car between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. and there wasn't a child in it.

Biryukova refused to take a polygraph or speak directly to the police about her son's disappearance, communicating through an attorney instead. The rest of Sky's family members, including his father, Solomon S. Metalwala (also spelled "Salman"), cooperated with the investigation, and Solomon has been active in the search for Sky whereas Biryukova has not been.

Investigators learned no one besides Biryukova had seen Sky for at least two weeks before his disappearance, and possibly much longer than that, but it wasn't uncommon for her to isolate herself in her home with the children for extended time periods.

In the aftermath of Sky's disappearance, his sister was taken into protective custody and placed in a foster home. His sister was too young to provide any statements useful to the investigation; she only said her brother had been in the car that morning.

Although no suspects have been named in Sky's case, the investigation has focused primarily on Biryukova due to the circumstances of the case and her lack of cooperation. She was born in Russia and has relatives outside the United States, and Solomon is from Pakistan, but authorities believe Sky is still somewhere in Washington state.

The circumstances of Sky's disappearance are very unclear and it's possible he went missing some time before his mother reported it. His case remains unsolved.

'We will never forget Sky': 8 years later, Bellevue boy remains missing

Wednesday marked the eight year anniversary of the mysterious disappearance of a 2-year-old boy from Bellevue.

Sky Metalwala vanished from his mother’s vehicle on November 6, 2011, and his mother continues to be uncooperative with detectives all these years later.

“Our detectives still want to talk with Julia Biryukova. We believe she knows what happened to Sky,” said Bellevue Police Chief Steve Mylett. “We will never forget Sky, and we will not stop looking for him. This is very much an open investigation.”

Mylett says between his department, the FBI and Redmond police, they've spent 14,000 hours and $2 million trying to solve the case, including pursing over 2,500 tips.

"I will spend any amount of money and go anywhere if our efforts result in finding Sky. He deserves that," Mylett said. "Someone somewhere knows something. Please come forward and tell us."

I’m pretty familiar with this one as well. Drives me crazy that Julia can’t be charged with anything. Even neglect for “leaving him in the car alone”. The fact that she “ran out of gas”, walked to the gas station, and returned without even a gas can...??? Come on.
I agree with you. But after all this time, the statute of limitations might even have run out for child neglect.

Who leaves a 2 year old in a car unlocked?? There allegedly is nothing wrong with the car and she did not need gas. I beg to differ that a typical four year old (the sister) could offer more information than they say. On top of this, a couple said no child was in the car and her friend dropped her at the car without getting out and helping her with the children and she had no gas can?

Sometimes, I don't get why they wait. This is eight to nine years old and the above facts I would think go ahead and take the chance and try her for some charge of murder. I get you can only try them once but odds of finding more evidence is slim after that long as well. I wonder if they pressured the friend at all and what the friend knew/knows or anything.

I remember when this was a new case and I was shocked that there weren't any charges brought against her. Now she's out there just living her life scott-free without a care in the world. :backtalk:

Totally agree. I would charge it and do their best. I know it doesn't work that way though in deciding what to charge, if there is enough evidence and the $$ but it should with some cases. This sounds like one, they have quite a bit of circumstantial evidence.

She could at least get time for child neglect! But the statute of limitations might be out by now. In some cases it's only 3 years..........

I think where I live it is 3 years on most things except murder but no idea on everything. The only thing I know of without one is murder but not even so sure that is still the case the way the laws are changing in various states right? The only one that can't be tried twice either or so I think (could be wrong these days). I don't even know if that applies to manslaughter or 2nd degree. This case though I agree. Take what you have and try it. How is the perp running free for decades justice? But then I guess one gets into the thought of what is enough evidence and the $$$ to try it if the only charge left under statute is murder. I don't know what the answer is but this woman was guilty of at least a few more minor things from the facts provided.

ETA: Not decades I guess in this case, just to fix that. I get a bit passionate if I read too much crime about children :(

For real! When I read that she claimed she left him in the car, unlocked, I was like WHAAT?! Who does that?! I don't care what the circumstances are, that would never be an option for me. And if she thought that excuse sounded better than what actually happened, I am nervous to hear the truth. I'm with ya on thinking she should have been charged.

We finally got an updated picture of SKY my beautiful son! Please take a look and share because he is 10 years old now. He has been missing for 8 years and this year in November 6 2020 it will be nine years. Thank you for always supporting me to find my precious sweet kind loving boy! Please share

His one regret? It’s missing child Sky Metalwala.

“That’s the one regret that I have leaving here is that we weren’t able to find him,” said Mylett.

Metalwala disappeared Nov. 6, 2011. His mother told police she left Metalwala in the car after she ran out of gas and walked to a gas station with her daughter. Detectives said her car wasn’t out of gas. Metalwala was never found. The boy’s photo sits on Mylett’s desk.

“I see his picture every single day. There is one person who can bring closure to this, and that is his mother. Again, I ask Julia Biryukova to come forward, work with our detectives and bring Sky home,” he said.

Mylett said Metalwala’s framed photo will stay on the next chief’s desk as a reminder, honoring the vow to keep searching for the little boy.

“Our commitment is to do everything in our power to find him — whether that’s this year or 20 years from now. We owe that to him. We owe that to his family,” said Mylett.

IMO It's a lie.

True Crime Tuesday: 2-year-old Sky Metalwala still missing

King County authorities are still looking for answers after the mysterious disappearance of a 2-year-old boy, Sky Metalwala.

The hosts of the podcast, Murder in the Rain, joined AM Extra Tuesday to discuss why the mother’s story didn’t add up.

Sky has been missing for 10 years today. Despite the headline, the age-progressed photo is not new.

Still no answers 10 years after disappearance of 2-year-old Sky Metalwala from Bellevue

Ten years have passed and there are still no answers about the disappearance of 2-year-old Sky Metalwala.

"It is a big burden and a heartache," said Solomon Metalwala on Tuesday, recalling that day, a decade ago when his two-year-old son vanished.

"We have asked Julia to come forward and talk to us, provide us with any information that she has. She has not cooperated with us," said BPD Major Debbie Christofferson on Tuesday.

"We have spent over $2 million on this case. We have investigated over 2,500 tips, and we have spent over 14,000 hours on this," she said.

Biryukova has continued to live in the area, remarrying, later fighting over custody of another child with another ex-husband. She declined to talk, when approached by a reporter in 2019, and has successfully hidden from public view since the story got national attention.

On Tuesday, she was due back in a courtroom, this time accused by Redmond Police of third-degree theft and stealing clothes from a Costco back in June. She did not appear via a ZOOM call.

Solomon said, despite the lack of a concrete answer and his frustration over time, he still remains hopeful that Sky is still alive.

"There's no evidence that says that he's not," Solomon said. "So I still kind of stand on that and to keep myself going."

He hopes somebody, somewhere, will see the age-progressed photo or that even Sky could think, "You know, there's something a little different about me, I don't really act like my brothers, I don't really look like my brothers and sisters, or my parents. I think that's what I'm really hoping for."

I wonder who ended up getting custody in that more current custody battle? I don’t think she should be allowed to raise children, But she hasn’t been arrested for a crime so….she can.
