Family searching for Philly teen who went missing days before graduation

Family members are concerned about a missing 18-year-old who disappeared just days before her high school graduation.

Philadelphia police say Shalaya Porter was last seen June 5 near 46th Street and Fairmount Avenue.

Her mother, grandmother, aunts and a teacher gathered outside Motivation High School at 59th Street and Baltimore Avenue on Tuesday to hand out flyers and bring attention to her story.

They say it's unusual the teen disappeared without her cellphone and missed her graduation.

Porter was preparing to go to Morgan State University in the fall.

"I love you baby. Just please come home. We had so many plans. I'm supposed to be going to college with you," her mother Kaleia Porter said through tears.

Incoming Morgan State freshman missing from Philadelphia home: 'Just want my baby home'

An 18-year-old Philadelphia girl who is planning on attending college at Morgan State in the Fall has been missing since June 5, according to police.

Shalaya Porter missed her high school graduation at Motivation High School in Philadelphia, and police are still searching for her, according to CBS Philadelphia.

Police said Porter was reported missing on June 5. She was reportedly last seen in the 4600 block of Fairmount Avenue in Philadelphia.

"I just want my baby home," her mother Kaleia Porter told CBS Philadelphia.

Her family told CBS Philadelphia they don't know where Porter could be.

"We just don't know," her aunt Felicia Hill said. "That's the thing that's killing us the most. The why and the don't knows and things like that."

Hill said Porter was excited about graduating high school and going to college, and leaving like this is out of her character.

"She was looking forward to graduating and looking forward to going to college and looking forward to living life and moving on to her next chapter," Hill said. "This is completely out of character when it comes to her. She don't go this long without calling her mom or contacting her friends."

West Philadelphia mother pleads for help in finding missing daughter, 18

A Philadelphia mother is asking for the public’s help in finding her 18-year-old daughter.

Shalaya Porter was last seen in the early morning hours of June 5 near her home at 46th Street and Fairmount Avenue in West Philadelphia.

Her mother, Kaleia Porter, said she’s doing all she can to get the word out about her daughter.

“I’ve been out here at corner to corner passing out flyers, handing them all around the city,” she said. “I made over 2,000.”

Kaleia said she first became worried when she noticed her daughter’s phone was left behind.

“I sat on the couch and called her phone, and that’s when I realized that something is not right. Her phone is here, but she’s not,” she said.

Kaleia said Shalaya was about to graduate high school and had plans to study architecture and fashion in college.

“I need her back home,” she urged. “She’s got a bright future ahead of her. … Just bring my baby home.”

“That’s my only child,” Kaleia stressed. “Just let her go, bring her home. [I’ll] send a cash reward for you. I just can’t do this without her.”

Just thinking of Shalaya this evening as we just finished our own high school graduation this afternoon. Not many teens are going to voluntarily miss that.

Not that I think she didn't leave on her own. Her cell phone being at home certainly points to that. But it's a big question of why. And whether or not something happened to keep her away once she left.

I am hopeful because I have seen kids that turn 18 and immediately think they are free and leave without a solid plan or means to make it or any understanding that bills etc. aren't magically paid. I can share a story of what one of mine did but I prefer not to. She quit her job the minute she turned 18 before graduating even. I was not happy about it. The day after her graduation party or maybe day of but after she took off thinking her graduation money which she took with her was a lot, etc. and of course no job to continue making money. I found her in not too long of a time after of course being worried to death. It honestly is not uncommon. I can also tell you what my stepson did. And kids of some others.

We don't know here that she wanted to go to prom or that she wanted to go to graduation. Many just want out of school for good finally and can't wait. There is talk of college plans but again that can be parents and can be pressure even. We have seen other cases that have been where the kid just took off at a similar age because no one at that point can make them come back and it isn't a crime.

Just saying all of this because there is hope if this is the case. Not saying it is for sure the case but it is possible. The age and timing fits. BUT she also could be with someone bad or have been in contact with someone bad prior to, etc. That isn't unheard of either.

I'd like to know when she turned 18 but even if it was months ago, the timing of this is that she finished her senior year probably right about the time she went missing so she was done with school. If school ended at the typical time frame of most. And seniors are often out earlier than the rest, at least our school did that.
