Are you familiar with this person, Ranch? People get lost around here kind of often. We have some of the best search teams in the country in this area. But, the open areas and the trees and the foliage makes it really hard to find someone who is lost.

Wait, hold on. This article is from 2016. I know because I know undersheriff Yon and he’s been retired for a while. He ended up being sheriff for a short period of time.

Sanford hasn’t been found in all this time? That’s not good.

I found out about Sanford Rice from the YouTube channel "The Missing Enigma" who just did a video about him. Before I watched the video I came here to see if there was a thread about him. There wasn't so I started this one.

After I watched the video I have to say that I'm surprised he wasn't found. The only thing that has been found was a jacket that may or may not have belonged to him. It looks like he may have gotten lost and traveled far away from Marion Lake and the search area.

Here's a link to the video. It's over an hour long but interesting.

I’ll have to check it out. I think I’ll have some time this afternoon.

I’m about 3/4 of the way through the video and first of all I want to say, you can see why it’s hard to find people that are missing in this area. There is so much foliage!

Secondly, the family member said that he had gone hiking before and gotten lost and he would follow water until he found a road. So that’s telling me that he tended to walk away from a trail. Maybe he would hear water and would go away from the trail to find a waterfall or what he thought might be a waterfall. Not a good idea when hiking alone without a satellite phone!

Thirdly, his age. I know he was in great shape, but he was still 75 years old. As mentioned a few times in the video, he could very well have had a heart attack. And if he was away from the trail, (which he must’ve been because those trails are very commonly used and someone would’ve found him), it makes sense that he hasn’t been found. I know somebody who is an avid hiker in this area and I’m trying to find out if she’s ever been to that lake. I would be surprised if she says she hasn’t.

Another part of the mystery to me is that he left Horton after 1 PM. I know where Horton is. It is quite a little ways from the area where he went hiking! And then the time is took for the hike itself. By the time he was up there, what time was it? It doesn’t get dark until about 9:30 or 10 that time of year, but still! I can’t imagine he would’ve thought he was going to walk around the lake that late in the day. And it was raining and it would’ve been a little chilly with all the trees around. It’s not very hot here in June, as a rule.

Confirmed! I do know somebody who has hiked up there. Unfortunately she can’t weigh in now as she’s at an event in Portland tonight, but I will get details later.

OK, more toward the end of the video they said the campers encountered him about 7 to 7:30 PM. So he knew he only had a couple of hours of daylight left. Very strange.

He seemed to make some poor choices while hiking and in this final hike that may have led to him having a medical emergency with no one around to help. It's really sad that this nice guy had to die alone in the wilderness.

Perhaps one day someone hiking off trail in the wilderness will find him and his family will be able to find peace.
