Circumstances of Discovery
Police were called when a man was seen walking through a Brisbane neighborhood with a partial human skull on November 16, 2012. He told police that he found the skull in a tree while walking and the skull called out his name. He couldn't remember where the tree was and although the area was searched, no additional remains were found at the time. The man was subsequently arrested.

After his release from jail on January 16, 2013, the man took officials to the site where the woman's remains were located - on a vacant hillside property, southwest of Bayshore Boulevard and Old County Road.

BRISBANE (CBS SF) – Police in Brisbane were working to identify a woman whose remains were found on a hillside – a discovery prompted by the November arrest of a man who was walking around with a human skull.

On Tuesday, police said the case came to light after a 9-1-1 call in November about a man in downtown Brisbane with a human skull. A customer at Madhouse coffee shop had called to report a man, identified as 56-year-old Joseph Carrabino, was showing off a skull that he said he’d just found.

Carrabino refused to give up the skull when confronted by cops on the cafe courtyard, police said. Witnesses said officers used a taser to subdue Carrabino after he tangled with officers. Two officers were hurt in the confrontation, police said.

Carrabino charged with resisting arrest and assault on an officer, according to District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe. Carrabino pleaded no contest to the assault charge. After Carrabino was released from jail in January, he lead investigators a vacant hillside property in Brisbane where he had found the skull. Police fouind the rest of the remains and identified it as a woman’s body.

Police have not said how long the remains appear to have been there, or whether Carrabino had anything to do with the woman’s death.

Investigators are reportedly looking at missing person reports and DNA analysis to try to identify the woman.

A KPIX 5 reporter who caught up with Carrabino on Tuesday could not get him to answer any questions. Reporter Joe Vazquez and his photographer were blocked from approaching Carrabino by a man waving a large wrench.

BRISBANE — The woman’s bones discovered on a bayfront hillside had been there over five years before a strange and violent string of events led police to them last month.

That span of years was among the new details police released Wednesday about the mystery woman, who remains unidentified since being uncovered Jan. 16.

Brisbane police Cmdr. Robert Meisner also revealed the woman was believed to be between 5-foot-3 and 5-foot-6. Authorities think she was 33 to 46 years old when she died, though how she died remains unknown.

Police were guided to the bones, found on a vacant property southwest of Bayshore Boulevard and Old County Road, through a series of steps that started Nov. 16. On that day someone called police to report a man was walking around with a human skull in a residential neighborhood on Visitacion Avenue.

Officers found 56-year-old Joseph Carrabino, who was carrying a cranium, and got into a struggle with him. He was arrested for resisting arrest and initially didn’t provide police much information about where he found the skull.

After he got out of jail about two months later, Carrabino led officers to the bones. Police have declined to say if he’s believed to have anything to do with her death. For the moment investigators haven’t even determined if she was killed.

The coroner’s office has sent the bones for DNA testing, which authorities hope will reveal the woman’s name. In the meantime, investigators have begun wading through missing-person reports in an attempt to identify her.
