Missing man’s car found purposely concealed in Westmoreland County; police call for more details

Police have found a missing man’s vehicle as they continue their efforts to find him.

Ruben Carranza has been missing since July 29. He was last seen driving a white 2002 Toyota Avalon with a PA license plate reading HSG-7080.

On Sunday, the City of Greensburg Police Department said that the vehicle had been found off Ridge Road in Acme.

A concerned citizen found it hidden in that area on Saturday and reported it to the police.

Officers said evidence shows the vehicle was purposely concealed and they believe it has been there since August 5, the same day officers first shared information about Carranza’s disappearance.

“We believe this timing is NO COINCIDENCE,” the department said in a post on Facebook.

Evidence also suggests this is not the first time the vehicle was hidden. Police said the car was first taken to a separate, unknown location on July 29 before it was moved to Ridge Road. They have not disclosed what that evidence is at this time.

“We strongly believe someone in the Acme area knows something,” the department said.

Family of missing Greensburg man plead for his safe return

It's been 10 days since the family of 36-year-old Ruben Carranza has seen or heard from him. His family told Pittsburgh's Action News 4 just how uncharacteristic this is for him and are pleading for his safe return or any leads on where he could be.

"He just wouldn't do this. I can't stress that enough. That no matter what, this is unusual, this is strange, this is weird," said Angela Winstead, a close family friend.

"It's like you're stuck, and you can't move forward. I just need my son to come home. Ruben, come home so our lives can go on because there's a part of me missing," said Dawn Rose, Ruben's mother.

Ruben's family said they were in Canada on a family reunion when no one was able to get in contact with him. His grandfather was the last to see him on July 28 when Ruben asked to borrow his car.

"First, I was angry at Ruben, right, like why are you doing this? Then, the more I thought about it, I was like, this doesn't make any sense. And then when we were able to pull up the phone records and know that he hasn't used his phone at all, that's when we came back early like we just camped up and drove back," Rose said.

The family then filed a police report. According to Greensburg police, Ruben's final cellphone ping came that following day, July 29, around 3:30 a.m. from a tower near Devil Dog Drive in Mt. Pleasant. Search efforts have been continuing around the Mammoth Park and surrounding regions.

Police in Greensburg are asking residents in the Mt. Pleasant, Ligonier and Laurel Highlands vicinity to stay vigilant. His loved ones say he also frequents the Pittsburgh area.

Greensburg family pleads for answers after still missing son’s vehicle is found hidden in rural area

It’s been an emotional two weeks for Ruben Carranza’s mom, Dawn Rose.

“I just want answers,” she told Channel 11’s Andrew Havranek on Monday.

She and her husband were in Canada for a family reunion at the end of July when she got a call from her dad.

“He said he [Ruben] borrowed his car on Monday and hadn’t brought it back,” Rose said.

That was on July 30, two days after Carranza borrowed the car. At first, his mom was mad. But then she checked his phone activity.

“The phone hadn’t been used at all since like early a.m. on Tuesday. I went from mad to like, ‘oh crap. There’s something wrong,” Rose said.

Family and police were initially concerned that Carranza may be in a situation where he would self-harm. But now, his mom said she’s not sure that’s the case.

On Saturday, someone who lives near Ridge Road in Acme noticed the car hidden away on private property and called police.

Police said after their investigation, they determined someone had purposefully hidden the car there. They said it was taken somewhere else on July 29, the day after it was borrowed, and then moved to Ridge Road on August 5. That’s the same day Channel 11 spoke with Greensburg Police Detective Justin Scalzo.

Police said that is not a coincidence.

“I think because of word getting out, whoever hid it the first time, felt like they had to hide it better,” Rose said.

Now, a bigger investigation has started to find Carranza.

Some photos show Carranza with a mustache, but the family said he does not currently have one.

I wonder what evidence they have to claim it was moved twice. Video?

I bet the answer lies in those last phone calls he made.

Apparently “evidence” showed that the vehicle ended up at this location on August 5, a week after he disappeared. The day his case was first reported to the public.
Not sure if they have evidence it was previously hidden elsewhere. Could be that he still had the car until that time.
Doesn’t look good if the car was previously concealed though.

Mother of missing Greensburg man pleading for information on his whereabouts

Dawn Rose, the mother of 31-year-old Ruben Carranza, who has been missing since last month, says the last several days have been almost unbearable.

"My son is still not here. I know he is not coming back, but I just want to be able to say goodbye," Rose said.

Carranza was last seen in Greensburg on July 29 and has been officially missing for over a week.

Now, his mother and the police are asking anyone with information about Carranza's last location to come forward.

"I'm stuck in this purgatory, right? I can't go forward if there is grieving involved. I'm just stuck. Just stuck," Rose said.

She added that her son had never disappeared like this before and had not checked in with his family to let them know his whereabouts.

When asked if she thought that he was missing or if something else had happened to her son, Rose said, "I think something else has happened. I first thought that maybe you know, for mental health reasons, that he left, but after knowing that somebody moved that car."

"We are again encouraging people from all over the county and especially those community members of the Acme area to just think about that vehicle," Scalzo said. "If they would have seen that vehicle or if they know something about Ruban or why that vehicle was dropped off at that location."

"You can call in anonymously," said Rose. "I am not trying to get anybody in trouble, I just want to bring my son home."

Family, concerned citizen put up $3K reward to help find missing Westmoreland County man

A $3,000 reward is being offered to help find a Greensburg man missing since July.

The family of Ruben Carranza is offering a $1,500 reward to help find him as Greensburg police and the Westmoreland County Detective Bureau continue their search.

Greensburg police say a concerned citizen has pledged an additional $1,500 for information that could help find Carranza, bringing the total reward to $3,000.

Carranza’s family is hopeful that the reward will encourage anyone with credible information to come forward.

“I just want to know where my son is,” Carranza’s mom, Dawn Rose, told Channel 11, “Just bring him back.”

The circumstances surrounding Ruben’s disappearance remain unclear, and his current whereabouts remain unknown.

Mother of Greensburg man missing since July fears he is dead

The search for Ruben Carranza began with hope, but now only questions and grief remain more than 10 weeks later.

Carranza, 31, was reported missing in late July and was last seen in Greensburg.

"If I get his body back, then I also can answer questions as to what happened to him, and hopefully rest a little better if I don't see any trauma on his body," his mother, Dawn Rose, said on Friday.

KDKA's Mamie Bah said, "You're saying body, do you think your son is dead?"

"Because of the evidence that we know, that maybe other people don't know that the detectives have shared with us, is why we feel hopeless," Rose said.

They are accepting what they feared from the start: that their beloved son is dead.

"I do feel like he's passed," Rose said. "I do. I'm just looking for his remains."

Rose and the 31-year-old man's stepfather will search in Acme on Saturday. Police said Carranza's vehicle had been located in Acme and that their investigation revealed that the car was purposely hidden on Aug. 5, the same day Carranza was first publicly reported missing.

"It's more of searching, so I could say where he isn't at this point because I feel like I have to do something," Rose said.

"I don't think accepting he's gone is giving up hope," Rose said. "There's a reality."

It's a painful reality that his family is learning to live with. Next month, the family plans to come together for a memorial. It will be a way to say goodbye, even if they can't bring him home.

"I want to have a place I can go and I can think about him," Rose said. "I want the headstone, I want the cemetery plot, I want a memorial service so his friends and community and his family can come together to really honor him."

A $3,000 reward is being offered to anyone with information that can help authorities locate Carranza.
