Teenager who killed 4 in Michigan high school shooting appeals life sentence

A teenager who was convicted of fatally shooting four students at his high school in Michigan is appealing his life sentence, his attorneys announced Friday.

Officials with the state Appellate Defender Office said in a statement that they have filed a request for Ethan Crumbley to be resentenced.

Crumbley, now 18, pleaded guilty to 24 charges, including one count of terrorism and four counts of first-degree murder, and was sentenced in December to life without parole. He was 15 at the time of the shooting.

His lawyers said new evidence shows seven witnesses could have testified about Ethan’s troubled childhood, his mother’s alcohol abuse during her pregnancy, and the potential impact of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder on Ethan, including how it could have stunted his maturation.

They said the evidence also raises questions about whether Ethan knew what he was doing when he pleaded guilty to the 2021 shooting at Oxford High School, and stressed that children can change.

“A life without parole sentence for a child is unconscionable,” the office said.

The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office did not immediately respond to a message Friday seeking comment on the appeal.

He doesn't seem to have any of the physical markers of FAS though.

As some just said in Lori and Chad's case, appeals are par for the course. Nothing surprising about this whatsoever. Probably 3/4 of a defense trial is making motions and objections on the record to have things to appeal and the case throughout actually and 1/4 is trying to get a not guilty verdict. In cases where that's far from likely, I'd say focus is even more so on appeals bases. Typical.

All of these "reasons" for his crime are more so reasons to keep him behind bars! Since he's damaged, who's to say he won't do something similar again? I have little mercy for people who go on a shooting rampage at schools, no matter WHAT the reason.

Oxford High shooter loses appeal to withdraw guilty plea in mass shooting

The Michigan Court of Appeals denied a request from the Oxford High School shooter to withdraw his guilty plea or be resentenced after he was sentenced to life in prison in 2023 for killing four students and wounding others.

The Court of Appeals turned down Ethan Crumbley’s application for leave to appeal, saying that there was “lack of merit in the grounds presented.”

The three-judge panel of Randy J. Wallace, Thomas C. Cameron and Sima G. Patel issued the order on Tuesday, May 6.

Crumbley’s legal team asked Oakland County Judge Kwame Rowe to set aside the life sentence and allow Crumbley to withdraw his guilty plea. The Oakland County judge denied Crumbley’s request, and the Court of Appeals reaffirmed that denial.

The 19-year-old was 15 when he committed the mass shooting. He is held at the Oaks Correctional Facility in Manistee.

His parents, James and Jennifer Crumbley, are serving 10-year prison terms for involuntary manslaughter.
