[Nolan] Wells travelled to Horn Island with a group of friends on July 4 but failed to return with them when they left around 3 p.m.
Conflicting accounts have been given as to whether he planned to remain on Horn Island, about 11 kilometres offshore, or return with his friends.
The roughly 17-kilometre-long spit of land is near the Alabama state line. The island is uninhabited and accessible only by boat, officials said, and is popular for parties and gatherings.
His mother reported him missing shortly after midnight.
The next day, boat and rescue crews launched searches and his body was recovered in waters on the northwestern tip of Horn Island.
On Tuesday, July 21, TMZ obtained a video from the 4th of July party on Horn Island showing people enjoying themselves on boats and in the water.
In the video, the camera pans to someone with the 18-year-old's skin tone bending down in swim trunks that match the ones he was wearing that day.
According to metadata, the video was recorded at 2:23 PM, which is about 2 hours before the boat Wells and his friends were on left Horn Island around 4:30 PM, per GPS, and returned to the Mississippi mainland without him, TMZ reported.
As Globe previously reported, Wells' body was discovered on the island on Monday, July 6. Investigators believe that he drowned, but the cause of death has not been officially ruled on as the case remains under investigation. The family has hired civil rights and personal injury attorney Ben Crump.
