‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

MEDIA - NANCY GUTHRIE: Missing from Tucson, AZ - 31 Jan 2026 - Age 84

That's how it sounded to me too. I don't think it didn't exist, I just think now media has little to report, no raids, etc. and so they are going and looking for this stuff... Same thing happened in Tepe and others... Maybe sooner thought because media was seeing little for activity and LE wasn't talking and so they were looking for prior reports in the neighborhood, etc...

Too bad they don't just say so instead of putting a spin on it as if no one looked into it or knew of it prior... And so on.

Tucson is huge as I've said and it was a Saturday night into wee hours of Sunday when this happened...

And it's not "winter" there like here. How many young women (and guys) for that matter might be yelling out of open car windows...

I don't put much store in it or any news of recent really.

Who is it from? And the Part 3 one as well. I'm kind of getting where I'm not giving creators or news "clicks" on this case and it takes a click to find out. And from where does it pull its thoughts and from whom?

Might help at least for some if you say by who as to who produced it. I might not always but I try to like say Entin's latest or it's obvious who from, etc.

I don't like what media is doing and had done with and to this case. Some anyhow.

Click the link and you'll see everything on YouTube. I already said, take it for what it's worth.

I KNOW how to do Youtube. I'm asking WHO the creator/channel is and what their source is. I'm not wasting my time unless reason to.

If you can't give a simple answer, fine. Just another of many things not looked at if that's what you want.

Why answer something you can easily look up yourself?

I didn't link it dodo. You did so I asked YOU. I am not giving clicks to certain people in this case any longer like Banfield or anyone who is pushing what she did or said. For one example.

The fact you won't answer says enough. And I have a ton to do so not wasting my time on it.

I'd suggest NICELY you cool your jets a bit today. You prior were not the person I think is the biggest problem but I've had enough of what you're doing today. I already hang out elsewhere a lot and well the place here is becoming not so appealing any longer...

Every thread is not for your agenda. Imo. Or shouldn't be.

This is from 6 days ago. It names a suspect, take it for what you want. I am not advocating his conclusion. It's just analyzing his thought process.

While I agree on looking at every avenue, I really hope this one is not going to turn out to be true. For many reasons. In fact, I don’t really want to talk about it on our site because if it doesn’t come true, we would just be causing more angst for the family. ☹️

Yeah, I've avoided talking about the theory. It is well thought out though.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos believes investigators are making progress as the search for Nancy Guthrie enters a new month.

Nanos spoke with NBC News correspondent Liz Kreutz on March 2 with some updates on the case involving the missing 84-year-old mother of TODAY co-anchor Savannah Guthrie.

Savannah, her sister, Annie, and Annie's husband, Tommaso, were also seen March 2 placing flowers and a card at a growing tribute outside their mother's home near Tucson, Arizona. The family continues to plead for help from anyone with information about her whereabouts and have offered a $1 million reward.

The handwritten message on their card read, “Though we are surrounded by so much darkness and uncertainty, our love burns bright. We love you Mommy. We miss you so much.”

Savannah also shared a photo on Instagram of yellow flowers from the memorial.

“We feel the love and prayers from our neighbors, from the Tucson community and from around the country 💛,” she wrote. “Please don’t stop praying and hoping with us. Bring her home.”

Nanos said the sheriff’s department now has a dedicated team from their homicide unit working with the FBI on the case. He added that he and his team are operating under the belief that Guthrie is still alive and are pursuing thousands of leads.

“I think the investigators are definitely closer,” he said.

Here are the latest updates.

Car Seen on Surveillance Video Not Identified

Kreutz asked Nanos about Ring camera video obtained by Fox News Digital that shows a car driving past a home in Guthrie’s neighborhood about 2.5 miles away from her house at 2:36 a.m. on Feb. 1. Guthrie was reported missing by her family hours later that day.

NBC News has not been able to independently verify the footage.

“Look, what I would tell you is this: We’re aware of it, and we’re looking into it, just like any other piece of evidence,” Nanos said.

He said authorities have not been able to identify the car in the footage.

“We’re looking at that vehicle as well as hundreds of thousands of other vehicles that were out driving that time of day,” Nanos said.

The Backpack Worn By the Suspect May Not Have Been Bought at Walmart

Investigators have not yet been able to identify the clothes worn by a man seen on doorbell camera video in front of Guthrie’s home wearing a ski mask, backpack and holster on the night she disappeared, according to Nanos.

The backpack the man is seen wearing is exclusively sold by Walmart, but Nanos says it may not have been bought at one.

“We’ve now learned that maybe it wasn’t purchased out of Walmart,” he told Kreutz. “That backpack is new, is exclusive to Walmart, but who’s to say I didn’t buy it and put it on eBay? ... That’s what we’re looking at.”

Nanos added that there is still information authorities have not shared with the public.

“There’s so much that everybody wants to know, but I would be very neglectful, irresponsible as a police, law enforcement leader, to share that with everybody,” he said. “We have information on this case that we think is going to hopefully lead us to solving this case. But it takes time.”

No Leads from DNA Found at the Scene

Nanos said authorities are still having challenges trying to process mixed DNA found at Guthrie’s property.

He suggested to Kreutz that the mixture could be from several people. Experts have said that can make it difficult to extract a DNA profile for one individual.

Authorities have put some DNA into the national FBI data bank but received no hits. Nanos told Kreutz he still believes the DNA could be a viable lead but that it will take more time to extract an identification.

When he says the backpack could've been sold through eBay, that's the tip I sent to the reporter in the area. I don't know for sure how they thought of it, but I'll take the credit anyway!

Never would have guessed.

NewsNation has learned that DNA found on gloves near Nancy Guthrie’s home was traced back to a restaurant employee who works nearby and is unrelated to her abduction, according to Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos.
