‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

What is wrong with people?! This is just another place we've gone that I never imagined people could actually stoop to.

I saw an idiot in comments last week trying to say the SIL is tied to the MN fraud case in the billions.

As far as Epstein, the supposed initial basis is because SG interviewed the survivor/s. I fail to see why that would play in either. Not like we've never heard anything most of them had to say, not the SIL.

People are just making things up at this point--well some do.

If you go to news types sites--their chats and comments are full of trolls and not moderated very well. Most.

There are also some lights in the background that they are trying to explain. It's worth a watch.

I'm assuming it will air at 9pm, your local time.
Somebody had shown a daylight view from that standpoint and it showed those lights coming from a neighbors house. I can't remember where I saw that at right now though, but it looked correct.

That's what they think.

When he's walking there is a shadow to the right. What light is on the left? (Right and left are from looking at the video. Not his perspective.)

He's really stupid. Trying to cover the camera with flowers he just picked is brainless.

If he saw the camera during his scouting trip, bring spray paint!

Brainless but no arrest yet though and seemingly not a clue.

Some think that was not BEFORE entering the home. it does make a person look at the timeline and all a bit differently if one considers it might be before, it might be some minutes in, and it might be after.

I don't have the disadvantage of seeing comments I have on ignore, so my response is to you and you only @Cousin Dupree

I really think they should go back to the beginning. I think there's something they glossed over.

Yeah, that makes absolutely no sense that if he was scouting it prior and then did that to the camera. It makes no sense even without being there prior to scout the place.

Entin tonight. Beginning starts with showing the tunnels searchers went into and he did as well but by 1:44, he is saying he can confirm that the pics most of us saw at a point where it appears to be the same guy, one with a backpack and one where he had taken it off, are not from the same day...

If this has already been linked let me know, there is one poster I won't look at but doubtful since that person claims to not do YT.

I have yet to watch the rest of it, but already that is interesting... I'll let all know what is worth listening to it for...

Says this was confirmed not only to him but to another reporter in DC... I don't like leaks or unnamed sources but I will say he never did what Banfield did. He even had a show with her before people blew up about her and she told him of the "suspect" and things she was told he didn't know, and he really didn't commit on it, just said he hadn't heard that.... So I'm not throwing him under the bus yet.

I did not like his going onto the property BUT he has also talked of that and knows many were not happy about it... And filming the blood...

I like to get news but not if it affects investigations and the safety of a possibly living victim...

Hasn't been given a day, yet, only knows the one with no backpack is from a previous day. Now honestly that could mean even just before midnight on "that occasion"... But he does point out they were recently asking for video back to January 11th...

That's already some food for thought... Imo... IF true and he MOSTLY tries to be sure of his reporting. Unlike Ashleigh although Brian does get overzealous at times... And both are affiliated with NewsNation which I also keep in mind...

Watched the rest of Entin, his guest is one I find pretty likable. Talking things are not cold but do seem to be dialing back and they aren't going to keep all the resources there when there are 20 experts that do this, and then too many that do that, etc.

I honestly don't feel more is always better although in the first rush of a case I think there's good reason for such if it can be done.

The guest also told of before he was retired and when they are sent back to their home base, they can work on their other cases but can be told to fly out to this state or that state if a really good tip or suspect on a moment's notice on a case such as this (FBI).

I started thinking a week ago before now even it is going to get dialed back. There's really been little since the two raids. I do think they might want it dialed back some too, the interest and press, whether MSM or otherwise, has been almost in the way at times.

I truly hope they have more than it's looking like but not sure.

And it will die in its interest, which is both good and bad, just like Reiner did. It's not nearly the hot thing any longer my goodness not even by TMZ. Lol. Imagine that.

It's probably the first day since it all started that I hardly paid attn to this one. I went to Richins with the trial starting and had a big day with an appt. I had.

That's both sad but good. MSM is giving attitude to those that can be out there live way easier more hours. I'm not a big fan of JLR but I will not knock that everyone was using his coverage, he was there more hours than Entin although he doesn't have the same sources, and while watching is feed could be dull when nothing was happening, he WAS there and did get things. I'll give him that. And willingly shared his feed which some don't. Entin also doesn't go live much. They were the two most present in my opinion and some stations like CNN just pulled later from their stuff (others too).

Anyhow, it was a nice reprieve although it sure doesn't mean I am not worried for Nancy. I don't think all the coverage is helping overall though. I like transparency but when they are making mountains out of molehills and stories about internal things and making assumptions and what is basically hindering in an investigation, I don't like it.

I tend to think she's not alive at this point and it isn't just due to health, it is surprising what one can get through that way sometimes if determined, I've seen it, and done it, but I just don't see why someone at this point would be keeping her alive. Funny how the ransoms mysteriously ended isn't it...? No more even possible scammers writing to even TMZ or any, at least not shared with us... So what could be the purpose of keeping her alive when there's no gain here or attempts any longer to gain something...?

Anyhow, hardly on it or here today 'til tonight and late night thoughts on this one as I do care as "most" of us do, I wouldn't say all. But most for sure.

Anyone who thinks they or he are dumb, well so far, nothing. We can hope they are way closer than we think but doesn't really look that way. So far the perp/s are winning are they not? Raids seem to be a bust. No named suspects yet despite Banfield's claims... Conspiracy theories abounding. Reporting that is not helping...
