‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

Not sure how the bashing of the sheriff who was elected as sheriff of this county is helping this investigation. Like calling a family member a suspect has helped nothing.

Here is a short one. I tend to agree/worry about the same thing, that the DNA they talk of from the house is nothing... Let's hope not, but nothing that's been said of it has given me any confidence at all.

He also thinks they should dial the investigation back to a tighter, more focused group and I tend to agree. I also think they want this to die down as to the overboard presence and interest by all types of media. It's all imo in THIS case interfering with things.

His remark about the gloves too...

I don't recall a single glove being found until AFTER people saw the video of the guy, does anyone?

Yes, there are cases where the person was taken from their home for various reasons.
Dennis Radar took two victims from their homes. One, he said so that he could tie her up and take pictures and the other, because she told him she was expecting company.
In the Russell and Shirley Desmond case, it's a mystery as to why Shirley Desmond was taken elsewhere...
And there's the following more recent case (2022, conviction 2025) where apparently, the reason the body was moved was to cover-up a sexual assault and murder.
I think surely there are other cases that we're unaware of.
Dermond is an unusual one.

Rader is in his own class/sick world but yeah.

I guess there still is the possibility here it was for ransom but it didn't work out, or revenge on Savanna possibly, something on that order.

Initially I wasn't quick to buy into that it relates to Savanna but as it goes on, I'm starting to turn that way... I had NO idea SO much was done with her mom at Today, with Savanna herself sharing so much and every day it seems, I'm seeing an old Today Show segment pop up, many of them, over years.

It definitely HAS taken her away from her job and she looks so destroyed. Maybe, just maybe, the person knows so long as Nancy isn't found, dead or alive, that is the way to continue to torture Savanna and her ability to do or return to her job... That's exactly what is happening too...

If Nancy was found, even dead, there would be a ton of sympathy, if alive, relief, and an ending to this. I won't say closure as I hate the word and disagree there is such but one would have the answers and slowly things might--I lack the right words--not go back to normal but start to normalize but as this is, that will never happen. This family will never be able to go back to normal regardless but answers do bring something, as does having the person back, one way or another.

This is absolute torture imo. Not the only case without answers, in no way do I mean that. My goodness, parents of missing children, how do they EVER cope!

To this day, I haven't settled on a theory, there just isn't enough to do so imo.

Do you have thoughts in any direction?

Excuse me; I see that I said Desmond rather than Dermond.
Yeah, well, those are cases I can think of or know of where victims were taken from their homes but what's remarkable to me is that the reason was either unknown (Dermond) or wasn't ransom or revenge.

If I'm the closest driver I would.
Aha. So if the driver remained close, there's a good chance of it?

Never even noticed lol, I thought I read Dermond. Maybe since I'm aware of the case, I just thought so lol.

Yeah, head scratchers or ones like such that are never solved are very frustrating.

I can't see a single reason in this one, just based on what little we know, to even come to a solid opinion of why this happened. Imo anyhow.

I honestly don't think they have much though. I sure hope I'm wrong, I've thought it in others and then they did...

It seems unlikely they wouldn't with all the resources being used but don't feel very confident. I feel like those raids were probably the biggest hurrah they had and I'm not very confident on the DNA from home, and I never fell for the thought the glove/s would be anything.

I DO hope I'm wrong.

Nice to see you by the way.

If someone calls for an Uber and it goes out for someone to take, that would be recorded as a request.

Today I had a request that I accepted. 3/4 of the way there the customer canceled. It will still show up in the records.

If someone calls and hangs up before talking to anyone, I think the phone company may have a record of the attempt to call.

As for the guy trying to cover up the camera, it's an amateur idiot. He tries to block the camera with some fresh picked flowers. Obviously, they didn't plan this very well. Bring some spray paint or duct tape.

Without knowing why she was killed or abducted, they're looking for almost anyone. It could've been me. Fortunately, being 2,000 miles away gives me a solid alibi.

You, on the other hand
One thing I thought was interesting was when I found out all you have to do is pull that nest camera off. I guess perp finally figured it out since it was off by the time authorities got there.

i was pretty doubtful about watching this but so far it's interesting... can't watch it all right now but will finish later. waiting for a live. take a listen, see what you think...

You wouldn't know how long the person would be in there. You might sit for a half hour or 5 hours. Sitting so long would make Uber take you offline.

Very well researched and plausible.

If he is at the Olympics, the idea might have been to take the money in Italy (or a nearby country) and run to a country without an extradition treaty.

I get that but I'm not thinking of the person doing it so they can pick up another ride but to warn someone once she was intending to head home, etc. Not that I'm sold on the theory, just one of many thoughts.

Okay. The first minutes I watched earlier I thought there were some good points but now going into the SIL and Banfield, not so much. He's tying sh*t together that doesn't necessarily tie together and some of it isn't that questionable.

Yeah i watched it only up until he brought up the SIL too.
Yep I quit as well but may have went just a minute or two further. He starts on that she likely never left their house. Good Lord. That's ludicrous and would take such a plan and why would they do it that way anyhow? Makes not a lick of sense.

What caught me about it was the CO thing. Had I know what came after, I wouldn't have linked it.

It does make sense, in a way. I'm not saying it's what happened, but based on what we know it is plausible.

So they go drip her blood around her front door and take it from her while alive? I think that's ridiculous honestly. Why? Does mom sit injured at their house why they collect her dripping blood and run back to her home to drip it? And they have a guy or do you think it is the sister who dressed up to be seen on video? Come on. That's crazy.

You didn't watch the whole video.
