‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

Fox is saying LE is leaning away from the first person that was detained and now away from the owner of the house from the 2nd time they swooped into another area and home, and away from family. I did note they did not say per Fox anyhow, away from the owner of the Range Rover, just of the home, and they are not one and the same from what i've heard prior...

LE from both agencies pushing back on what was said and say they don't know where it came from, etc. Most of these three reference it but this one probably more so even.

To me, nothing is obvious about this case. I still teeter towards the original ransom demand was authentic (as far as being from the perp). Here's where I get hung up on it. Why send a demand on Monday, with a Friday deadline, if you don't know the missing person isn’t going to be found in the interim?

I've never really paid much attention to some things apparently, but this was a burglary. Burglary is defined as entering a residence with intent to commit another felony. I think in Arizona, that gun took that act of breaking in up to a class 2 felony. I think we tend to use the terms burglary and robbery interchangeably. Actually, they aren't the same. I know what we're all talking about here, but I'm watching sources words a little more carefully.

This is like a bad dream.
Here's the ransom/texts/informant demands lineup as far as I can figure:

Perp A:

Monday, Feb 2
Friday, Feb 6 (was it the 6th?)

This comes through as a 2 tiered ransom demand through tiplines. This is who I'm thinking may have actually been involved in the kidnapping.

Perp B:

Sees the Guthrie family video plea for proof of life. I think on Wednesday, Feb 4, proceeds to text both Annie and Tomasso asking if they got the bitcoin. Gets himself arrested promptly.

Potential Perp C:

Is behind the tips to TMZ demanding payment for inside info. Why? Because announcing the first 2 demands came through tip lines opened the barn door for every Tom, Dick, and Harry to hit tip lines now and in the future because hey, anonymous.

I'm not convinced Perp A and Perp C are the same person.

All my musing.

I think the "taken to Mexico" is very possible. Nogales, Sonora, is the closest city in Mexico to Tucson, Arizona, located approximately 60 miles (about a 1-hour drive) directly south along Interstate 19. It is a major border crossing for shopping and dining.

I still do not understand why LE have no traffic cam footage. Do they not exist in Tucson?

Does anyone have a way to search for an old flight on Flight Radar? I saw a post on X days ago but can't find it now. I'm looking for a private plane that departed Tucson for Mexico (Puerto Vallarta?) sometime between 4 - 5 a.m. on February 1.

Oh so it is ok now to use a private lab in Florida? FBI and LE need to make up their minds.
I don't honestly know if it has ever been true there is a big problem between the agency and the department. I think there are some people and perhaps some disgruntled employee/s that may feel that way or want to cause issues.

I'll tell you in my areas sheriff's races are some of the most heated nasty races one will ever see. And when employees of the agency (like deputies and detectives) get involved or prefer one candidate over another and that candidate is not the one that ends up voted in, it is quite the atmosphere.

She probably wouldn't but note that Savanna NOR her family have said a word about the sheriff and they hail as Nancy does, from Tucson, nor about the FL lab. From what I understood the very first things went to FL and so it only made sense to keep sending them to FL so all were in the same place. And yes, they are going from FL to the FBI, I hard that I think yesterday, maybe even the day before.

Anyhow, I don't believe almost anything in this case other than what we know to be fact and now some are even claiming like the FBI said things that then is said they didn't say. It looks like interior problems almost more than problems between the heads of the agency and department.

It's very hard hto know what to believe and most that does not name a source has been said to be false. News is very out of line in this one too.

I don't know what else to say other than I thought Reiner was bad, this one may be far worse. Imo.

It's possible but how do they expect to bring her back then? Do they have her passport or do they never intend to bring her back? If that's the case, why even keep her alive or take her there? I don't know...

My folks have been to Nogales, I never have when I've been to AZ. They had been years earlier. We neither went in that direction and the border towns were trouble when I was in AZ but I've been to MX many times.

They may have traffic cam footage, but keep in mind they aren't sharing almost anything with the public since early days. Doubtful too there were any in Nancy's neighborhood and they have to be able to pick a vehicle that possibly went to and from her home. I have no idea how many miles it would be before there would be a traffic cam. Believe it or not also, many areas still don't have such. Tucson probably does, it is a huge city. She wasn't exactly in Tucscon central.
