‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

That's what I don't get. It makes no sense to me. The only thing I can come up with is to hurt somebody in her family.

It's possible that whatever they were doing they abandoned after seeing the case getting national attention. Killed her and took care of the body, who knows how.

Whoever took her, what was their endgame? It sounds like none of the ransom notes were real, so if it wasn't for ransom, what the hell was it for?

Of course the family made a video saying they'd pay. So, was there a real looking Ransom demand?

Has It already been paid? Was it deemed false?

Who knows, when will we find out?

Found this article that names some suspects.

According to law enforcement officials, the determination follows an extensive review of physical evidence, digital data, and investigative leads developed since Guthrie was first reported missing.

Authorities stated that the totality of the circumstances — including the absence of verified contact, communication, or financial activity — has led investigators to transition the case from a missing persons investigation to a suspected homicide inquiry.

While Guthrie’s body has not been recovered, officials said the evidence collected thus far supports the presumption that she is deceased. Law enforcement agencies continue working with forensic specialists and partner agencies to locate her remains and identify those responsible.

Late Thursday night, a significant law enforcement operation took place at a residence in the 6280 N. Placita de Rojelio area in Tucson following what authorities described as a tip connected to the case.

Public records indicate that Luke Anthony Daley, 37, has prior criminal cases involving drug and weapons-related charges. Court filings show multiple criminal case numbers associated with his name. His brother, Matthew Daley, 39, was also detained during the operation. Officials have not confirmed whether any charges have been filed in connection with Guthrie’s disappearance.

Authorities have not publicly identified an additional male reportedly detained at the location, nor have they detailed the specific reason for the search.

Around the same time as the law enforcement activity, FBI agents were observed stopping and examining a silver Range Rover approximately two miles from Guthrie’s home. The vehicle was later towed after agents processed the scene. Federal authorities have not confirmed whether the vehicle is directly connected to the disappearance, stating only that investigative leads are being pursued.

Law enforcement clarified that earlier reports incorrectly linked the operation to a different nearby residence. Officials issued a statement correcting that information.

The FBI confirmed it is actively assisting in the investigation. Authorities stated that DNA evidence recovered from Guthrie’s property does not match her or individuals known to be in close contact with her. Forensic testing remains ongoing.

Investigators also installed specialized equipment on a Pima County Sheriff’s helicopter to attempt detection of potential radio-frequency signals associated with Guthrie’s pacemaker device. Officials noted that the device reportedly stopped syncing with her personal electronics around 2:30 a.m. on the morning she disappeared. Authorities have not disclosed whether that effort produced results.

Earlier in the investigation, Tucson resident Carlos Palazuelos was detained but later released without charges after authorities determined he was not connected to the case.

The FBI released surveillance footage from a doorbell camera showing a masked individual wearing gloves approaching Guthrie’s home on the evening she disappeared. Officials have not publicly identified the individual shown in the video.

Authorities also reported receiving ransom communications demanding millions of dollars; however, law enforcement has not verified their authenticity.

The case has received national attention, and both local and federal agencies continue to pursue leads. Officials emphasized that certain investigative details cannot yet be disclosed.

The investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance remains active, and further updates are expected as new information becomes available.

The source, speaking to Fox News Digital, said the latest theory behind the missing 84-year-old’s disappearance is not currently the prevailing view among investigators.

"This is not the working theory inside the unit," the source said before pushing back further on the burglary narrative, noting that nighttime residential burglaries are uncommon.

"Nighttime residential burglaries are so ridiculously rare. Crazy rare," the source said, before highlighting how "commercial building burglaries" happen at night and "residential during the day."

The source also questioned whether Guthrie’s home would have been a likely burglary target.

"We don't have any indication that [Guthrie] really kept anything valuable there and if this was a burglary gone wrong, they don't take the victim with them usually," the source said. "I guess anything is possible but my gut says it's something else entirely."
