‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

Personally while I was keeping hope, today, my opinion changed just all on its own but probably from taking in all that's went on.

I think the ransom notes are all bull, as far as having her alive anyhow for long for ransom. I think she was dead not long after they left the home, whether due to the injury she had or her heart, or because the perp killed her. And sadly I think he drove her somewhere and dumped her. If there's any truth to any of the ransom notes at all (which I tend to lean against), she was either already dead or "he" killed her before it went on too long.

I think they have a better chance of maybe one day finding the perp than they do Nancy, sadly.

I can't get past the family paid no ransoms and the deadlines are past for the threat of her death. If they did pay any ransom, we sure don't know about it and it did not result in her coming back did it? I think they are hoaxes or she was already injured or dead if any were true, most likely.

I just had that come on me today and that's how I'm starting to feel. Two raids, warrants and detainments and 0 for 2 as to finding Nancy or even making an arrest...

I have always thought whoever wrote the first ransom note is the guilty party all around.

I did somewhat just because it's the only one the family kept responding to. Yet after they said they'd pay, no Nancy back and apparently no payment... So what does that mean?

It would "seem" after saying they'd pay, the family never paid...? And these other ones that TMZ is milking have received no time of day as far as a recorded response from the family. Of course, we don't know everything in them but Levin comes closer every day to sharing what he said he wouldn't because LE asked him not to. I'd trust that just until he does and the only reason imo is he got total flak over doing it on the first one.

Lots of disgusting humans out there...

What do you think about the work angle...? Savanna was due to cover the Olympics, was it you or Sunburst, someone who said people are already vying for her job... I think I asked early on if it couldn't be someone jealous at work, but not sure if I said that here or elsewhere, I think here.

Take this for what it's worth, which isn't much, it actually disgusts me how they are speculating, saying Savanna blames herself and you name it. It disgusts me actually. It's short. News Nation. Click bait and full of maybes but just to see what they are doing, maybe worth a watch.

Banfield and Entin are both News Nation... Entin imo is even avoiding Banfield right now. Yet kind of pushed things himself. Quite the industry isn't it...?

What if her pacemaker isn't working anymore. That would have been a great idea the first day possibly.
I've heard so many different things about pacemakers and it seems to depend on what kind you have and what year you got it too. From what I understand it will keep working even if the person doesn't want to any longer...

They were flying a plane low over the home and surrounding area maybe a week ago...? Entin reported they were hanging out the sides of, I mean the helicopter, not plane. I'm thinking now that's what they were doing, looking for the signal... From the pacemaker. If you look it up, pacemakers don't have to be charged once implanted. They last more than a decade, even two, etc. So not that often if at all ever. Maybe replace every decade or so... That's my conjecture but they do not have to be charged to still be working.

The pacemaker was supposedly sending detail to her doctor's office, if reporting was correct in the beginning. So did that stop at some point, I wonder?
Pacemakers need a "go between" to report in. Her phone had an app on it to do that. It stopped reporting around 2:30 a.m. Sunday February 1 when her phone was at home but her pacemaker was out of range. I'm fairly certain it's bluetooth technology.

Whether she's alive or not, her pacemaker still has power.

I know they still have power but was never sure on the reporting but I guess it makes sense it would need an app or something that makes it specific to hers too, etc. So I don't suppose then if she was in range of a free wifi ever that it would start reporting? Probably not.

You know at first, that made me think they knew she had a pacemaker so they made sure the phone and watch were left behind...? Which would mean the person knew her pretty well... Most likely... That got me a bit excited as it would be a major clue and show some pretty smart thinking/planning maybe.

But then I thought well I guess they just as likely could have made sure those things were left behind because they knew the devices themselves could be tracked.

Do you know if they go on after death...? I think they do...

They do. Pacemakers are disabled after death by hospice, funeral home, hospital, etc.

I think pacemakers work off of very long term batteries. I'm not sure how long the battery lasts but I'm thinking 10 years +.
Old school pacemakers had a battery life of about that long, but now they are much longer. My dad's really old one was 10 years then he had it replaced, still quite a while back, and that one was said to be about 20 years. His 20 year one was long enough ago that it did not have the ability to transmit without being physically, manually hooked up to a device to monitor it.

That's what I thought, thanks. There's a lot of info out there and varying opinions and some I think by people that don't know, and of course there are different pacemakers. I would have guessed logically they'd have to be taken out or turned off somehow after death.

JLR is sharing info and a pic of one of the guys detained the other night... Boy if he couldn't be the guy in the video at Nancy's... I guess Fox reported on it too I think he said...

Usually if I glance at JLR not much is going on but today went in and he's sharing that pic and more info on him... He was labeled by Fox as a POI supposedly if someone sees the Fox segment with it he is saying he is a Zach, don't want to share the name in outright print

He gave a last name but I didn't catch it all. Said he wouldn't share address but find it oneself and that he lives fairly close to Nancy's.

Says Fox's last update has it saying he was a POI... This was the guy at Culver's and believed to be owner of the Range Rover...

The other guy is also named, extensive criminal history... Scheduled to go to a trial on 02/24/26, to be tried I believe. Luke Daley (not sure on spelling) similar facial features too. Showed a picture someone else put up on him. Heard his name the other night actually... This one's. Not the other one's.

Per Entin, per FBI, (I think), 16 gloves were recovered and most were from searchers discarding their gloves (!). One has a DNA profile that seems like it MIGHT match the suspect (what?). In the next 24 hours I think was said FBI should have final results back from the Florida lab on that glove (they do have preliminary results). I heard this in a live on another show quoting Entin and don't like to rewind on a live so that's the best I could catch, and I think I have it accurately. If someone wants to look up Entin stating that today. Ruiz I think reported similar. I'm not leaving the live to do it but if no one can I'll try to find it when the live is over.
