‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

WHAT TO KNOW

The FBI released a description of the suspect in Nancy Guthrie's disappearance, describing him as approximately 5’9” - 5’10” tall, with an average build. In the video, he is wearing a black, 25-liter "Ozark Trail Hiker Pack" backpack, according to the bureau.

The FBI increased the reward to $100,000 for "information leading to the location of Nancy Guthrie and/or the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in her disappearance."

The Pima County Sheriff's Department Forensic Team was seen searching the brush off a road near Nancy Guthrie's home early Thursday morning. The search for the missing 84-year-old mother of NBC host Savannah Guthrie on Friday has entered its 13th day.

TMZ founder Harvey Levin told Fox News that his organization received another letter from someone claiming to know who Nancy Guthrie's alleged kidnapper is, with the emailer writing, “I am not being taken seriously.”

The FBI conducted an "extensive search" Wednesday along multiple roadways in the Catalina Foothills area north of Tucson, Arizona, related to the investigation.

A Range Rover was towed away from a Culver's parking lot in Tucson, Arizona, Friday evening after it was involved in a traffic stop during a law enforcement operation in connection with the investigation into Nancy Guthrie's disappearance.

Law enforcement investigated the Range Rover, which appeared to be silver or gray, for a couple of hours before having it loaded up onto a tow truck and taken away from the scene. During the investigation, authorities covered the vehicle's license plate and removed items from the vehicle to photograph, even holding up a sheet at one point to block the view of police activity in the trunk.

The driver of the vehicle was detained by law enforcement for questioning and was taken away from the scene. It's unclear if the person remains in custody.

At least three people were detained Friday evening for questioning, but police have not named any suspects in Guthrie's disappearance.

17 hours agoNancy Guthrie’s health concerns remain urgent as search day 13 continues

As the search for Nancy Guthrie continues its 13th day, concerns about the missing 84-year-old’s medical condition remain a major focus.

During a Feb. 5 appearance on The Ingraham Angle, Fox News medical analyst Dr. Mark Siegel said Guthrie has significant underlying health needs, including a pacemaker and daily medications.

“She takes daily medicine to stay alive, and we have no idea if she’s getting that,” the host noted during the segment.

Siegel warned her condition could deteriorate quickly without treatment, especially under stress or injury. “Very concerning about her health,” he said, noting potential cardiac risks, blood pressure complications and limited mobility.

He also clarified that pacemakers do not function as tracking devices and cannot be used to determine her location.

Guthrie’s family has previously said she walks with a cane and has mobility limitations, factors Siegel suggested could indicate more than one person may have been involved if she was forcibly moved.

Hearing out there hints of this was a bust, that the home has been let go and no arrests. I am going to try to find the source of that info to verify. Man I HOPE NOT.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Saturday there’s been no signs of Nancy Guthrie while addressing late-night searches conducted near the home of the missing 84-year-old.

The sheriff told Arizona’s Family sister station, 13 News, that the Friday night’s operation was conducted based on “a lead that led to a search warrant and no arrest.” He later added that there was no signs of Guthrie at the home

When speaking to 13 News, Nanos denied reports of a shooting or a suicide that circulated social media in the overnight hours.

Nanos also a one person of interest was detained during a traffic stop. The individual, who he described as “cooperative,” was later released.

Oh, for crying out loud. I don’t even know if I want to follow this case anymore, not unless there’s been an actual arrest.

The hysteria is over the top.

Yes to both. In what world is it okay to stake out the scene of an active SWAT investigation, possibly blocking roads or interfering? Some even rushed to the hospital the other day because there were rumors that the family and Nancy were headed there. Just gross behavior.
And for what? To be the first to break the news if something happens? Does that even really matter in this age of the media? It doesn't to me. Half the time, the first reports that come out are inaccurate anyway and we have to wait for the real info later.

And telling absolutely everybody where SWAT is headed and following them there live on air doesn't help, either.

I drove close to 4 hours today and was positive there would be good news.

So nobody committed suicide? This :poop: is unbelievable. I hope this Sheriff loses his next election.

Calling them the keystone cops is an insult to the keystone cops!

I too am done with this.

The Guthrie family keeps getting yo yo'd around.

To be fair, while I'm not a fan of this sheriff, I don't think most of this particular batch of wrong info came from him... This time.

I do think he's way too fond of the spotlight.

Would you have been happier if someone had topped themselves then? I don't really understand that logic.

Still sources and leaks. One can tell as Entin had sources last night that tipped him off or helped him out. Could be just people seeing SWAT and calling him but very doubtful.

I'm not down on the sheriff OR the FBI, as one hears both ways.

This case has gotten ridiculous as to "media" and speculation. That's for sure.

You know LE, most, unless leakers, are trying to also plan around media and keep silence.

Yet we all, I'd guess, I too, am guilty of watching or checking out the only ones there that are live. Entin is one, JLR is one. Probably the top two for spending time there.

Entin has tried to behave a bit more carefully since he took the pics of the blood, just like TMZ is trying to act now like they are keeping things hush as LE asked them to. Yeah right.

Anyhow here's Entin's most recent. I will still watch him but he really walks the line. Banfield I'm done with. JLR is a bit hard to take, he just is. His chat is wild, etc.

I don't watch either as the main live place. Entin generally isn't live for one. JLR is, but ridiculous chat. And like any there live you can watch hours of their hyped headlines, his type, and a lot of nothingness for hours on end.

There are a few channels who are not there but pull while you watch their lives from all sources. And they temper it, keep it sane, and have great chats and friendly subscribers. That's mostly where I stick.

However, I've had my fill other than when something new. A lot of regurigation with click bait.

Anyhow he's not my fave, but he's arguably the best one covering it on the scene there, he walks the line a lot, clearly has leaks or some such, better than JLR for instance.

Here's his most recent just a short bit ago. But it's mostly conversation with someone, but sometimes those are good just for thought. That's also been done to death though in this one with every single happening.
