‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime​

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.


On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

The "technically everybody is detained" makes the rumblings I've seen of one guy ran and was shot.

Neighbors are telling the media that one guy shot himself in the head as police moved in and police have covered what appears to be a Range Rover with a plastic tarp. Medical examiner is at one of the scenes.This is on thegatewaypundit and several other American news sites.

From the Sheriff as of 8 minutes ago. Sounds like they were going to do a presser / release info but the FBI said no.

Maybe more arrests that they are carrying out? Plus they have to notify the families of any deceased persons before the info hits the media.

NewsNation has exclusively learned that a SWAT operation is unfolding on Friday in Pima County, Arizona, in connection with the search for Nancy Guthrie.

SWAT officers converged on a home near Guthrie’s neighborhood and ordered two individuals inside to come out; both complied. Law enforcement is now searching the residence. NewsNation’s Brian Entin is live at the scene, where we are the only media outlet present.

The location where police have blocked off is approximately 1.9 miles from Nancy Guthrie’s house.

There is no reporting this morning that wasn't from earlier, that I've seen. Thanks to stupid neighbor, I was up 3 different times including now and watched several lives. Now everything is old news from a few hours ago. Supposedly one person did off themselves. Allegedly a woman named Dolly got a picture of the body (not intentionally I don't think, not sure). I'm sure some things being reported will end up wrong, they usually do. I've heard 3 detained, also heard 2 detained. And I've watched a LOT.

What does seem clear is nothing has indicated they found Nancy, so far anyhow.

They claim the car at Culver's was related somehow (Range Rover), they are going by the fact FBI was also there and didn't think there'd be another operation by them that was not related to Guthrie.

Clearly there are still leaks as Entin had knowledge of where before anyone I believe. And he cites sources.

I'm not reading here these days all of the posts because I've already watched it myself generally elsewhere.

I thought for a bit well it must be about Nancy because they took a car in and why would they do that for fake ransom notes but then I thought well maybe, if they were looking for things related to the notes and aren't sure if they really knew anything about who took Nancy.

I don't know.

I know they don't have to share anything with us but I think it's past time they do share some with the public. The sheriff was supposedly going to do a presser but then said the FBI asked him not to.

Probably all this is known by anyone who has already watched all but that's the key things imo. There are a lot of things I don't count on because one said one thing, and one said another. Like I heard a coroner's van was there, others said never saw any such thing, same thing with ME and some other things. Whether someone killed themselves or not doesn't seem to be a sure thing with some but others say there absolutely is. Before the real event some live people reporting headed to the wrong locations so it also wasn't looking like they might even be right.

Right now FOX live is saying THREE were detained. I've heard 2 and I've heard 3. So some things just aren't for sure fact yet, like how many.

I've heard that but not by everyone so that is one thing I'm not taking as correct yet but I did hear that. I've also heard 3 people, with 1 dead, and so only 2 taken in.

I've heard what appeared to be a mother and two sons... I think Entin put the mother like in her 70s he was guessing... I wouldn't count on that though, he isn't the best guess on ages, I've seen that before with him lol. I most often here 3, but one of those 3 dead.

And yeah, sounds like that happened at Culver's. They also put up a shield to go into the car at one point. Some said taking things from it, others think there is a body in it.

So some of the "facts" and reporting are a bit all over the place yet. Imo.
