‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

I am not entirely convinced the masked person is male.
That's an interesting thought! To be honest, I really haven't taken just ten minutes to really take in the photos/vids and what people are doing with them or saying beyond a minute here and there. I had things I absolutely had to get done and then even here has been busy in the thread and it all broke so fast. I happened to have NBC up when it was announced such was going to be released and from there just fast... Has been since honestly... Did get what I had to finish the most done. Still busy news though and thread.

So.... let me think. That's a thought... And where would I take that... Definitely ski mask and gloves conceal any sex. People are remarking out there that feet are small in comparison to body size. Not overly tall it seems...

Do Annie and her husband have kids in their late teens or 20s?
I think they are up there. Just going by pics that seem to be a few years back. Not sure about adults, but possibly teens. Honestly don't know. There is that one family CHristmas pic but I didn't feel it was this past year or real recent...

As possible as anything. Just don't know why an intruder or robber would take her right back to near Annie's neighborhood. Of course that is IF what is going on now means anything like she isn't near her own home, hard to say.

what is your other theory, that one is certainly possible.

I was leaning towards the SIL but I hate that Banfield outed that, but it's been hard to get off the mind and they do seem to center over that way a lot. After these pics/video, I thought okay, that's not him I don't think. I was actually relieved as it would be so hard for others in the family to find out it was family but it also scared me even more for Nancy.

However, there definitely could be more than one person involved here...

With the ransom, I couldn't decide if hoax or not but still thought it might work with the SIL. Either a way to distract the investigation and family and/or to get some money.

I've never been at a positive or hard leaning though. I was over the 50 percent mark however. I thought wrong when I saw the pics, now they are back in that neighborhood and I think right... My head is like a pendulum lol.

most out there think this will break wide open here shortly.
Here is my second, less plausible theory.
Nancy had been a widow for decades. Her husband died when Savannah was a young teen.

Some guy with money troubles is online, looking for wealthy elderly women on dating sites so he can start a relationship with them to get money. Nancy isn't on the sites, but he hears about her from a friend of a friend type scenario- maybe someone who works/worked in the neighborhood. He somehow makes contact with Nancy- maybe through charity or volunteer work she did. She isn't interested and tells him to take a hike. Enraged, he decides to get revenge.

Do you have questions about the investigation? CNN's Laura Coates will answer them tonight

Tonight on CNN, Laura Coates will present a live one-hour special, “The Search for Nancy Guthrie.” The special will air on CNN and CNN All Access at 11 p.m. ET.

The special will include fresh reporting from the Tucson, Arizona, crime scene and analysis from former top FBI officials, profilers and forensic analysts.

Coates and her team will also be answering questions about the investigation. You can submit yours in the form below:

I think everybody on here understands different currencies. You are preaching to the converted here.
Yeah, I've actually been out of the country! Many times.

To my knowledge you have traveled the world more than any person on here.

Even those who haven't though know currencies aren't the same.

Most of us know how to add too, and spell.

Anyhow, just ignore such.

Have you got your boat out because I found my oars! Two of them!! I'm ready for a trip!

Light subject lol.

Interesting theories.

TUCSON, Ariz. — A former FBI agent and a medical doctor explored with Fox News Digital alternative theories other than kidnapping for ransom in the Nancy Guthrie case after former FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino joined Sean Hannity on Fox News' "Hannity" Monday to discuss Guthrie's disappearance.

Ya'll (yes, all) need to knock it off.
Stop trying to police what people are allowed to talk about.
If you don't agree, or don't think something is relevant, or just plain ol' don't want to engage with that person, that information, or that source...ignore them!
And also remember that just because someone disagrees with you does not mean they are trying to argue. It's okay to have different perspectives and point out your viewpoint or information, and at the same time, not be arguing or criticizing.

Everyone just needs to take a big breath. If people are getting under your skin, maybe go touch some grass and come back in a bit. The arguing is getting childish and hard to read through.

Did we hear about this shirt before?

I saw it on something I think yesterday? I didn't trust the site though. Now it might seem to have significance, at the time it didn't. Still not sure it's anything.

I will say though I hadn't seen it anywhere until yesterday. I put it down to like that necklace remark in here yesterday. Not verifiable.

Who knows though? Just can't say it's a solid thing, imo.

Some of the "reporters" go a bit off the charts sometimes. Where I saw it, I didn't consider it a good source.

Touch or smoke?

I sure wouldn't want a guns barrel banging against my male parts while moving about. So yes, a strange way to carry a pistol.
I was watching the Sarge and he's retired NYPD and he was remarking about where he was carrying this plus how the back pack and any weight would uhm, if driving and different things, not be too safe and comfortable. Just for starters...

I've seen rumors of it on twitter.

This guy making this video is exactly how they are now saying crime scene contamination AFTER LE released the crime scene. I can't believe how little work LE did on this one and had to keep going back for things that should have been caught in the first day or so.
