‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

Just what I was thinking.

How did the kidnappers arrive at $6 million? That seems odd.

It may mean that three people are involved.
Well something we can all or most agree on. A kidnapper allegedly that possibly doesn't even have Nancy.

The ransom amount, a thought is there was a Friday deadline right? And then a Monday one? It could have said 5 million by Friday but if not, Monday it will go up to 6 million and so on. It may have also threatened what they'd do to Nancy if after Friday, each day it was late, etc...

The show I linked here from last year said Savanna has net worth of 40 mill (I'm not sure where they get this stuff) and makes 8 million a year. I think Tresir heard now she is making 10 mill a year. That of course doesn't mean they save it or some of it doesn't go to an expensive lifestyle.

My thought is the kidnapper though it was a reasonable amount they could come up with with a mortgage, savings, time and liquidation, etc. IF they were going by Savanna's wealth.

What is your leaning as to what happened here? Do you have one?

I have NO idea.

Gigi ended her live on a poignant note which I agree with. Even if she is found alive, Nancy is never going to be the same, nor is the family, whether dead or alive. Now that is flat out truth. She has been traumatized no doubt. The family has too. It will never be the same even with the best outcome.

Ok. I'll bite. How does that prove she's still alive? In your example, she could have told them a week ago

It also could mean that the person that said it is familiar with what is in her lounge.

Neither proves she's alive now.
They have to prove they have got her and that does, if she tells them something that the family recognise. The second is proof of life. They have already said they will kill her if they don't have the ransom by Monday so there's that too. If the person is already familiar with what is in the lounge it means the kidnapper must be familiar with the family, which is a risk and they therefore may kill her as she would likely know them. They have to ensure the money is not sent till they are sure they will or have released her. An intermediary perhaps. The FBI should be able to assist with that. They must be the experts presumably.

I agree with most of that but not of the family taking pictures or having to provide proof. The kidnapper has to do that. There is absolutely nothing the family would photograph in the home to prove anything to the kidnapper. And it would not give a date, anyhow, if the kidnapper knew such. Nancy could have told him days before, he could have been in the home in his life, etc., it would not prove she is alive now.

Those pictures and flashes have to do with something else. Imo.

Or six. A mìllion each. A good proof of life could simply have Nancy talk on a phone to Savannah or over the internet on whats app or similar.

Hopefully it is getting close to being resolved.

Except telling them something in somebody's house is not in any way proof of life. Anybody familiar with that house could have said it. Even if it was Nancy that said it, it is in no way proof of life now because she could have said it a week ago and been dead since then.

All I know is not all of us, but several us here have our moms left and they are elderly and I know I worry every single day about losing mine and most likely do. And those who don't have went through the loss of theirs and that's even harder. I think that's why so many can identify with this case. i'm not sure how nationally known it would have been if not for the Savanna connection but if we heard it, we'd be very worried and it would catch our attn I think. I can't imagine, well I somewhat can, and it scares me to death, the thought of it.

Gigi made a good point earlier, Nancy and her family are never going to be the same, no matter how this turns out. This is just heartbreakingly sad and I and many are still trying to have hope. I hope there is some yet. The family may know otherwise, hard to say.

I don't think we will go another full week without some answers imo.

But the police themselves might need photos for evidence at a future trial. Eh?

I think someone complained about trespassing.
I heard that but also it was said no one was answering the door and you'd think if you complained, you'd answer the door. However, I take JLR with smaller than a grain of salt and said that more or less when I posted it. They were speculating more than that and I didn't say as much...

However what walking in the brush was related to, I'm not sure...?

Don't know. I don't have much faith in that channel though. But LE was there...

Just 8 minutes. He says flat out luminol which I have thought since hearing about pics last night. Also talks of how Savanna is the only one like with the money who could pay and how she is front and center. And how the Circle K and looking for video is largely not being seen as a big deal as it's an inside job. A lot of food for thought. And who is pointing them to pay this ransom demand versus the other one and so on.

I honestly think the search of the septic or holding tank or whatever it may be is both a misdirection and showing they covered all bases...

Gray has now jumped into this. I've had enough.
I personally think the answer here isn't anything that far fetched as to the who.

He's good at mapping though and finding cameras.

I'm heading for lightness. But for anyone who wants to:

I think answers will come, hopefully, in the next day or two.

I've had it with the b.s. there is out there myself.

I think it lies close to home. And no one is letting the job to be done very easily.
