‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

Does anyone else think it's a bit odd they didn't include the church member notifying the family in the timeline that they probably worked hard on? Seems a bit odd to me. There's quite a gap in there until the family shows up that day. When was church I wonder.

I'm not saying it matters, or that it is a lie, but that was one of the first things always being said starting the realization she was missing... Yet it's not included...

Wondering how she normally got to church. Did she drive?

It is said she did drive ahd had a car. Not sure if she drove to church, but I'd think so.

I think she likely didn't drive to her daughter's because it was night. I'm a lot younger and hate driving at night. Or perhaps she was going to have a few drinks at dinner.

I'd guess they interviewed church people? I mean she would likely trust the people from church.

It might sound stupid but I wonder if they interviewed colleagues at the Today show? I hard one retired LE guy say that he couldn't quite shake how this was right before Savannah was to head to cover the Olympics. Banfield kept saying how many months or something like that of work it takes ahead of time to cover the Olympics. Not that that means anything. Every since he said that, it crosses my mind too. Savannah had her on the show more than once, she seemed to take her to some work parties or events maybe, some of those pictures look to possibly be events like that. Maybe someone at work was a jealous colleague and knew if Nancy's went missing, Savannah would not go to the Olympics.

Farfetched I know, but one of many of the more farfetched things I've thought of (and dismissed).

You know, I've hoped she is alive and still do, but the sheriff didn't seem as confident in that yesterday and 3 guests on STS last night said they didn't think she likely was given all that we know at this time.

I still think it's closer to home though. I'm hoping they know who it is and they are just building the case before arrest, and waiting for some things to come back, and watching him as she is still missing. In Tepe, Kohberger and others, it was looking like they had no clue and then bam, an arrest, and they had known. The thing is maybe they won't arrest here because they may hope the guy leads them to her...

This article has some interesting points in it about the ransom note.

https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/savannah-guthrie-mom-nancy-missing-02-06-26

The FBI said it is investigating and taking seriously the note, which was sent this week to some media outlets. Here’s what we’ve learned about the note:
The note, demanding millions of dollars in Bitcoin for Nancy Guthrie’s safe return, begins by stating Guthrie is “OK, but scared,” according to Harvey Levin, founder of TMZ, which received it. The note has two deadlines — one at 5 p.m. yesterday and one for Monday, an official said.
“If a transfer wasn’t made, then a second demand was for next Monday. We’re not going to go beyond that,” FBI Phoenix Special Agent in Charge Heith Janke said at yesterday’s news conference.
“The second deadline is far more consequential,” Levin told CNN’s Erin Burnett last night. He did not elaborate.
Those who have seen the note say it details information that only someone privy to this case would know.
“They do mention the floodlight, the damaged floodlight. There is something else, and it is the placement of the Apple watch,” Levin said. Janke confirmed the note referred to those two items.
Media outlets TMZ, KOLD, and KGUN each received a purported ransom note via email. None provided contact information.
The note, Levin told CNN, indicated the Guthrie family would have no way of contacting the purported captor or captors. Whoever sent the email to TMZ, he added, went to great lengths to remain anonymous.
KOLD anchor Mary Coleman told Burnett she had not received any communication since receiving the note.
CNN’s Cindy Von Quednow and Elise Hammond contributed to this reporting.

Last night I saw a YouTube with megyn Kelly and Brian Entin talking about the case so I decided to watch. On it, Megyn said that she her sources heard that Nancy hadn’t been going to church and only watching the Services online. That’s interesting! And Brian said he heard the same thing and his staff has been trying to find out if that’s true or if she was going to a different church.

So the church attendance issue has a lot of questions.

From what the family has been saying in their plea videos, it doesn’t sound like anyone has information on how to transfer the money? I’m just speculating, but that’s what it seems like. I hope something didn’t happen to Nancy in the meantime, and so they gave up on the whole Kidnapping scheme.

In an early article, it was stated a bitcoin account # was given. I'll have to see if I can find that.

Well I've been wondering why they didn't put down as fact on the timeline the church member notifying the family. I figured that may have meant a family member lied... That there was no church member that said that at all...

Now I hadn't seen she'd been attending online so that's very interesting. I did see Megyn with Brian but only in a short or two. Honestly I'm a bit tired of most of the coverage today I'm seeing as it's all the same old stuff, most of it. I did see a neighbor talk a bit who I hadn't seen before, nothing too major though, just about cameras and how they just aren't likely helping that much due to the distance between houses (my interpretation), etc.

But back to the church thing, WHICH family member would a church member notify? I'm guessing the local family and NOT Savannah right? The ones that can go check on her... AND who was the last to see her...? And WHO might have want it realized she was missing...?

That's where my mind is going with it. And I haven't heard anyone out there say that, I just took off from the fact they didn't put that down as fact on the timeline, that a church member is what alerted the family.

Now with your added info it's like an even bigger hmmm...

The bitcoin address was real in the notes sent to media it's been said, so they DO have a way of transferring the money. I think the attempts are to try to find out more for one if she is alive, two to trace the kidnapper and I'm sure the FBI is coaching the family. So yes, they could send the money and the kidnapper has no reason to contact them again unless he gets upset at receiving no money. But that could also risk Nancy's life.

I THINK but won't swear to it that the sheriff or FBI said the bitcoin address in that letter or those letters was legit. Not talking about the guy who was arrested but those first letter/s. No one is sure if the letters the media outlets received are all the same.

I heard it was a legimate bitcoin address. I think it was said in the presser but can't swear to it.

Yeah so the "alleged" kidnapper gave them all they needed and "supposed proof of life" but they are trying to claim they didn't because my guess is they haven't figured out who this is yet or need more proof. I've heard it speculated they "may" have included a voice audio or something of Nancy because Savannah mentions in the family appeal that AI can manipulate voices and things or something like that. And asks for more proof of life. Then the brother says they need a way to establish contact. To me that is soooo obvious what they are doing, most of us know such LE tactics.. Unfortunately, the kidnapper probably does as well.

My guess also is with the second deadline the $$ amount likely goes up as do the threats about what they will do to mom if the first deadline isn't met...

If that's the case, I sure would be looking hard at the person that reported her missing from church services

Of course it could also be the church member. if she quit going, there may have been a reason or a problem person. If a member did something to her, then they called the family acting as though Nancy still attended and that it was unusual she wasn't there.

But why wouldn't the family know if she no longer attended?

I'd like to know though where Brian or Megan got the news she wasn't attending any longer? There's been so much unconfirmed put out there by Asheigh and these types

So where does the knowledge or "claim" I should say she wasn't attending any longer come from?

This whole thing started because she never missed church, didn't it?

What if they tried to use the bitcoin access and it didn't work?

Per AI, but it doesn't give source information:

Nancy Guthrie, mother of "Today" anchor Savannah Guthrie, attends
St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Tucson, Arizona, in person. She was reported missing on Sunday, February 1, 2026, after she failed to show up for her regular in-person Sunday morning worship service, which prompted a friend from the congregation to contact her family.
  • In-Person Attendance: Reports confirm she regularly attends St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church and did not attend on the morning she was reported missing.
  • Routine: A church member indicated she typically drives herself to church, and her absence was immediately noticed by the congregation.
  • Disappearance Timeline: Investigators believe she was taken from her home between Saturday night and Sunday morning, preventing her from attending the service.

I've had so many things be totally incorrect from using AI. Once when I was trying to figure out who was going to be officiating a game that day and AI was taking me there was no game that day, when there was 100% a game that was within an hour of playing. Then, just the other day, I was trying to find something dated the day I was looking and it was taking me that it couldn't find things that were dated in the future when every single thing I had that had a date on it was saying it was that day🙄
