‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

We are getting a little bit of info from him on the timeline... Camera disconnects, etc.

I'm going to have to rewatch this.

The very idea of kidnapping an 84 year old with a bad heart and pacemaker is just not a very sound idea in the first place is it? All your eggs in one very fragile basket is just a stupid idea.

Could she have had a fall in the home, and then been disoriented and wandered off somewhere? I know that doesn't explain the non working/damaged cameras though.

Well you have alien powers so i would expect you to have special talents and insights. Can you explain why no back up vids available? Were the cams already damaged/disabled before she was brought back to her home around 9.30 pm?
I have no idea. There are SO many different camera companies out there. Did Nancy know how to use her phone to monitor cameras? Were they on alert when she was sleeping? Did she have issues with her vision, so she couldn't see her phone easily? <-----the last one is an issue for my elderly mother.

I don't think that's very likely, especially hearing this presser now. Her camera (I think the doorbell one, I have to rewatch) disconnected at 1 something a.m. It also seems she bled and then it stopped and she was put into a car. There just are several things they hint at or say that seems to exclude this being a fall and her wandering off on her own.

Investigators interviewed an Uber driver who brought Nancy Guthrie to her daughter's nearby Arizona home for dinner Saturday night — hours before her disappearance.

Officials didn't say if the driver had any helpful information regarding her movements leading up to her possible abduction.

A camera at Nancy Guthrie's Arizona home detected movement overnight Sunday -- which could have been a person or an animal, officials said Thursday.

However, the camera was disconnected from the network at the time and not broadcasting video, the sheriff said.

It's not clear if the camera picked up the attacker who abducted Nancy -- or if it was something else.

Nancy Guthrie previously posted online about wanting to get a camera outside to detect animals in her desert neighborhood.

I am so sad that she didn't have cameras all around her place. Any woman living alone in a house needs them, IMO.

Thank you for documenting the timeline for us!

Since they seemed to start with the doorbell camera, did they enter via the front door? Was it mentioned that someone had to break in?

Well if she didn't then Ashleigh is full of sh*t claiming several were smashed, etc.

I think there were cameras, she just didn't pay for the subscription. I didn't either with mine but you still could look at the feed and as you said, download anything you wanted to save.
