‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

The destruction of the cameras and the blood outside the property is what i don't understand. How did the perp know that the cameras did not record to a back up location? Presumably they didn't or they would have video up to the cameras suddenly not working. But they seem to have no video at all. Or they havent shown it - for example, video of her coming home.
I was under the impression LE is waiting for what they can get from backup/from the company.

LE hasn't confirmed any of these things. The blood we've seen of course but that could be from him, her, from another time even (though that is doubtful).

An Arizona news anchor who saw the possible Nancy Guthrie ransom note sent to her station revealed that it came via email — and it was “clear after a couple of sentences” that it “might not be a hoax.”

“A lot of it is information that only someone who was holding her for ransom would know,” Mary Coleman, anchor for Arizona-based CNN affiliate KOLD 13 News, told CNN Wednesday.

“Some very sensitive information and things that people who weren’t there when she was taken captive wouldn’t know,” she added.

“It also included a dollar amount, a deadline, and, again, other specifics that only Guthrie’s abductor might know, so that definitely raised some red flags,” Coleman said, adding that it was clear immediately that it might not be a sick prank.

I don't know... I know it supposedly said what she was wearing but how would her children know every piece of clothing she owned, and anyone could have taken things from pictures they've seen, hard to say. I'd also think if they didn't say she was in pajamas, might be a hoax as her pacemaker disconnected at 2 a.m. so pretty sure she'd be in pajamas. Unless there are other real details no one could have known. Didn't TMZ read the entire note or no? I won't follow them, so I guess I don't know.

I think there is getting to be a lot of confusion as to when FBI was into each home, how many times, and for what.

One of the times they were there to record the video the family did from what I understand, yet some in the news jumped to other conclusions on that time.

I was thinking, I'm not going to name him as he has not been named a suspect, if the person who drove her home is the one who did this, and she was dropped off at 9:45, why he'd wait until closer to 2 a.m. to do something to her?? I doubt he was in the home with her for 4 hours talking or skulking around in the dark. I guess he could have been outside dismantling cameras although that TOO has not been confirmed about the cameras.

However, is there PROOF of when she was dropped off? That time could be a lie but we don't even know they suspect him, however, it's possible they do.

I guess he could have wanted to not be recognized and go in late and surprise her.

It just seems odd if he had her in the car, he had opportunity then, if he dropped her at the home, he had opportunity then. Why the 4 hour gap IF it even is him?
Well that is my point. The cameras were presumably working then so where is the footage of him dropping her off/ taking her to the front door etc?

Well that's one of the reasons I am even wondering about the truth of the cameras and what, if ANYthing, happened to them.

In the early times, when he was more forthcoming, the sheriff said there were cameras on the home/at the home, etc. He did also confirm she didn't have a security system, the type that would emit an alarm she did not have.

Yet then we get these reports unconfirmed about cameras, smashed cameras, taken cameras, mostly from intrusive news media and/or leaks.

I'm not sure what I believe as to the cameras.

Here's a link, it is upcoming at noon. I think I'll watch it on Gigi's channel, she has a friendly bunch in chat.

STS is also streaming it and will likely have their show up at 11:45 I think I saw earlier.

I'm sure also for those that prefer news stations, some of those will be as well.

My cameras last for a week. I can download anything during that time period, and mine are very inexpensive.
I had cheap ones myself although if I wanted to pay more, I could upgrade some capabilities even after I had them. They were good though for how cheap, one doesn't need to spend a fortune. Would our cheap ones I wonder, have any storage in the unit itself? Probably I'd think, as our feed comes from there for how many days it lasts.

It has been speculated that LE took the cameras off of the house. If they didn't have access to Nancy's feed, would they take the cameras?

A perp could possibly leave their house quietly and return later with other occupants not waking?
