‘Today’ show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother is missing in Arizona and authorities suspect crime

The disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie over the weekend is being investigated as a crime based on what authorities saw at her home, an Arizona sheriff said Monday.

Asked to explain why investigators believe the Tucson-area home is a crime scene, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility and said there were other things indicating she did not leave on her own, but he declined to further elaborate.

“I need this community to step up and start giving us some calls,” Nanos said during a news conference.

The sheriff said Guthrie, who lived alone, was of sound mind.

“This is not dementia related. She’s as sharp as a tack. The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” Nanos said, adding that she needs her daily medication.

Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday at her home in the Tucson area and her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, the sheriff said.

Nanos said a family member received a call from someone at church saying Guthrie wasn’t there, leading family to search for her at her home and then calling 911.

“From what the family’s told us and everything we’ve learned, she could not walk out of that home 50 yards. We believe she was taken out of the home against her will, and that’s how this investigation is moving,” the sheriff told NBC’s Tom Llamas.

On Monday morning, Nanos said search crews worked hard but have since been pulled back.

“We don’t see this as a search mission so much as it is a crime scene,” the sheriff said.

Even so, a sheriff’s helicopter flew over the desert Monday afternoon near Guthrie’s home in the affluent Catalina Foothills area on the northern edge of Tucson. Her brick home has a gravel driveway and a yard covered in Prickly Pear and Saguaro cactus.

Savannah Guthrie issued a statement on Monday, NBC’s “Today” show reported.

“On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support,” she said. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy.”

He knows there were cameras outside the residence but they'd rather have the companies that are experts in it take their time and get them what they need from the cameras. Not sure that's a great statement. Take their time?? When someone is missing? He's very willing for the interview but not sure he should have said that. Seen a few things and now hearing that that makes me think they think she's dead. Not sure...

Family is being very cooperative, they want their mom back.

Ashleigh points out Savannah with criminal background and is a lawyer that she will be extraordinarily helpful as a team mate. Sheriff says she has been... Ashleigh says more than an average victim family member would be like. Say what? And he says he doesn't know what an average vic family member would be like and she says something like I do or you do... He's a bit frustrated here I think with her. Not sure I blame him. Banfield says Savannah is brilliant, he says no doubt, I have no doubt.

Okay... Going to break for a moment... I want tot hear the rest now but need the break. No one will have to watch it lol as I'm giving a total play by play of it.

Nah, I'll finish it tomorrow. I haven't had any Netflix and it's already way past bedtime. Going to watch a show or two and I guess hope I get some sleep. I've got about 15 minutes to go but it is linked if anyone else wants to watch it or pick it up.

Now cops in Pima County say they believe she may have been snatched from her bed against her will in the middle of the night.
A spokesperson for police told The US Sun: “Sheriff Nanos has stated that he believes a crime has been committed.
“At this point, investigators believe she was taken from the home against her will, possibly in the middle of the night.
“Taken against her will includes possible kidnapping or abduction.

“At this time, Mrs. Guthrie is still considered missing.
“Detectives remain on scene and are actively following up on all tips as they are received.”

‘CRIME SCENE’

Cops had earlier said the home was a “crime” scene although they did not elaborate on what they had found at the $1million property in the upmarket Catalina Foothills areas.
“As I said yesterday, we saw some things at the home that were concerning to us,” Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos added.

We believe now, after we processed that crime scene, that we do in fact have a crime scene, that we do in fact have a crime, and we’re asking the community’s help.”
Nanos said he was “not ruling out” foul play.
He told the Daily Mail “she did not walk away”, adding: “We believe she was forced to leave that residence. It was against her will.”

Savannah – who has been an anchor on NBC’s flagship morning show since 2011 – was absent from the show Monday.
In a statement read on air by her Today show colleague Craig Melvin, she said: “On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support.
“Right now, our focus remains on he safe return of our dear mom.”
Nancy has limited mobility and is in dire need of her daily medication, which if she does not take could be fatal, police said on Monday.
She was last seen near Tucson, Arizona, on Saturday night at approximately 9.45pm.
She was reported missing the following day.
Despite Guthrie’s “limited” mobility, Nanos stressed the 84-year-old is of “great sound mind” and does not suffer from cognitive impairments.
“She is as sharp as a tack. This is not somebody who just wandered off. Her physical limits are just based on age. It’s more physical. She is clearly as sharp as a tack,” said Nanos.
A neighbor of Guthrie told the Daily Mail that the community fears the elderly woman could have been “abducted.”
“We heard that the front door was left open,” neighbor Paul Arnaud told the outlet, adding that he heard Guthrie “vanished shortly after being dropped off from a church function by a friend” on Saturday evening.
“So a lot of us are worried that it was an abduction because they did a thorough search throughout the entire day and early evening of the entire area and they could not find her.”

HUNT FOR NANCY

The search effort included volunteers on the ground, drones, K9 units, and a helicopter, said the sheriff.
After news of her mother’s disappearance was confirmed Savannah, 54, pulled out of hosting the Winter Olympics opening ceremony on Friday, Page Six reported.
In a tribute for her mother’s 80th birthday, Savannah previously said: “She loves us, her family, fiercely, and her selflessness and sacrifice for us, her steadfastness and her unmovable confidence is the reason any of us grew up to do anything.
“She’s lived a life of integrity and loyalty. She is a consistent doer of the right thing and the hard thing.”
Nancy had shared a photo from her last get-together with her daughter, weeks before she went missing.

Sounds to me like her bedroom tells the tale. Was it tossed and bloody? It also sounds like things were moved that they believe she wouldn't have been able to move herself with her physical limitations.

If she was taken, I sure hope she fought and left her mark.
Have you got a link for it being a crime scene, (apart from the Sun that I posted) being taken whilst sleeping and the things moved that she wouldn't be able to move herself?

ETA I have got updated now by reading the links and the latest. Still don't understand the things moved and no danger to public unles it's an inside job.

Is there a link to the full PC somewhere? That was terrible - only about a minute of the sheriff stuttering along. Then it jumps to another subject completely.
It was in the first post on this case on Crime Storis 2 or Current Crimes 2 I mean. Go into the article link, then the presser is in the first video on the page.

Here's a CNN article that is quite detailed.

Investigators believe Nancy Guthrie was abducted from her Arizona home, but they’ve been tight-lipped about what led them to that conclusion about the disappearance of the 84-year-old mother of “Today” anchor Savannah Guthrie.
Nancy Guthrie was last seen Saturday night at her home in the Catalina Foothills near Tucson, and police say time is of the essence to find her, especially since she is without crucial daily medication.
At her house Sunday, law enforcement found a “very concerning” scene that spurred a criminal investigation, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said, adding there is no indication of any threat to the public.
Savannah Guthrie, who traveled to Tucson after learning her mother was missing, is now asking for prayers for her family.

When was she last seen?

Nancy Guthrie was last seen Saturday when her family took her home from dinner around 9:30 p.m., Nanos told CNN. They got her in the house, and she went to bed, he said.
When she did not show up to church Sunday morning, a church member called her relatives, who went to her home around 11 a.m. to look for her, the sheriff said at a news conference Monday.
A family member called 911 around noon Sunday to report her missing, Nanos said, and homicide detectives were sent to the home.
“Something that they told me about that scene made me believe that there’s more than just a missing person,” Nanos said about the decision to set in motion a criminal investigation. “We still hope she’s alive, and we continue with those missions of search and rescue.”
Officials do not know what time she was taken, Nanos said.
Nanos initially told NBC News, “When you’re taken from your bed and you don’t want to go somewhere, that’s an abduction.” But Nanos “meant that figuratively and did not mean she was literally taken from her bed,” the sheriff’s department later clarified to NBC.

What was found at the house?

Law enforcement is treating Guthrie’s house as a crime scene and has described the circumstances around her disappearance as suspicious, Nanos has said.
The case is “not dementia-related,” Nanos said at a Monday morning news conference, and Guthrie is “of great sound mind” and “sharp as a tack.” But she also has limited mobility and “couldn’t walk 50 yards,” the sheriff said, leading investigators to believe she was taken from the house.
“This isn’t somebody who wandered off,” Nanos said.

“We also have some things at that scene that indicate to us that she was removed from that scene against her will. I can’t go into all those details” to protect the integrity of the case, Nanos said.
He also declined to say whether it appears Guthrie was hurt during the incident.
Investigators are analyzing DNA evidence found at the scene, the sheriff told CNN affiliate KVOA.
Asked by CNN whether Guthrie could have been part of a kidnapping-for-ransom plot, given her daughter’s high profile, Nanos said that is not the direction investigators are taking, but “we’ll never rule it out.”
Investigators also do not believe it was a home invasion or robbery gone wrong, Nanos told MS NOW, adding they’re not dismissing that possibility, either.
Right now, “time is very critical” in finding her, the sheriff said at the news conference. Missing her daily medication “could be fatal” for Guthrie, he said.

Who’s involved in the investigation?

Local authorities are leading the investigation, and FBI agents from across Arizona are “fully engaged” and offering technical resources, a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation told CNN. This includes assisting with analysis of data from cell phone towers near the Guthrie home.
A priority for investigators right now is downloading security footage from the house, he said. Private companies such as Google and Apple have also been offering assistance, the sheriff said.
Officials are urging the community to help, asking neighbors to look through video footage from their homes and call in any suspicious activity. Any bit of information could help investigators piece what happened together, he said.
“I need this community to step up and start giving some calls, let us know if you’ve seen something,” Nanos said.
The sheriff’s department set up a tip line for people to submit videos or images that may be useful to the investigation, and a reward of up to $2,500 is being offered for information leading to an arrest.

Authorities are also looking through digital evidence, including by using a license plate reader and scrubbing surveillance video. It is unclear whether a vehicle was involved, Nanos said.
Police have Guthrie’s cell phone and are looking through that as well, Nanos said.
Border Patrol brought its dog team to help in the search, he told CNN.
“We take a very strong regional approach to law enforcement in this community,” Nanos said. “The Tucson Police Department, sheriff’s department, 10 other local agencies in this valley – I’ve heard from them all.”
The sheriff was optimistic, saying, in the end, “I really believe that we’ll find her.”

What has Savannah Guthrie said?

Savannah Guthrie is in Arizona, Nanos said. The “Today” show opened Monday with a statement from her: “On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom.”
The statement also urged anyone with information to contact the sheriff’s office.
The anchor’s security team has also been in touch with the sheriff’s department, Nanos said, adding law enforcement is not aware of any threats against the TV anchor.
“Thank you for lifting your prayers with ours for our beloved mom, our dearest Nancy,” Savannah Guthrie wrote in an Instagram post late Monday, describing her mother as a “a woman of deep conviction, a good and faithful servant.”
“Raise your prayers with us and believe with us that she will be lifted by them in this very moment. We need you,” she wrote, quoting a Bible passage from Isaiah before ending with a solemn message: “Bring her home.”
Guthrie’s cohosts on “Today” continued their emotional pleas for help in finding Nancy Guthrie on Tuesday’s program.
“I saw that post from Savannah last night. I hit my knees and prayed,” Carson Daly said. “I don’t think I’ve ever prayed for anything harder in my life.”
Savannah Guthrie often has spoken highly of her mother and their close relationship. During a celebration of her mom’s 80th birthday on “Today,” the anchor described her as someone who “lived a life of integrity and loyalty” and raised three kids after their father died before Guthrie’s senior year of high school, the anchor said.
“She has met unthinkable challenges in her life with grit, without self-pity, with determination, and always, always with unshakeable faith,” Guthrie said in that tribute.
This story has been updated with additional information.

So was there a break in and she disturbed a burglar? Followed by an altercation or murder? Why can't they give more info?
That's one theory I think I heard. That she saw the person so they couldn't leave her as a witness. But why wouldn't they just kill her in the home? How is it if that's the case that they knew she wasnt home?

Thanks. In post number 2 it says the following:-

Police do not believe there is a threat to the public, Nanos said.

“Everybody just wants to be able to know that they can go outside and enjoy their community and come home and be safe at night in their rooms, asleep in bed, and this lady wasn’t able to accomplish that,” Nanos said Monday. “We need her back. We need to find her, and time is very critical.”

So no threat to the public BUT she wasn't able to be safe in her home, asleep in her bed.

So.......

The sheriff wouldn't confirm the open door. Also I thought he said a family member dropped her off and this said a friend. I never heard she was at a church function either but could have been. It was said family was called when she did not show up for church on Sunday though. Or did Ashleigh say that? She or the sheriff did.

I also think I heard she was taken around midnight but unsure. I

I'm wondering how they know a lot of things as to inside the house...

I have the impression they know a lot more than we think...
