Search expands across counties for 2 missing University of South Florida students

The search for two missing University of South Florida doctoral students is intensifying as investigators follow leads across multiple counties, and friends are growing increasingly concerned about their whereabouts.

Detectives with the University of South Florida Police Department and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office are asking for the public’s help in locating Zamil Limon, 27, and Nahida S. Bristy, 27, who were last seen in the Tampa area on April 16.

Limon — a doctoral student studying geography, environmental science, and policy — was last seen around 9 a.m. at his off-campus apartment on Avalon Heights Boulevard, less than a mile from campus. Authorities said there has been no confirmed contact with him since.

Bristy, a doctoral student in chemical engineering, was last seen about an hour later, around 10 a.m., at the NES Building on the USF Tampa campus.

A family friend alerted university police on April 17 after being unable to reach either student.

According to the office, detectives are actively following leads and conducting searches in multiple locations across Hillsborough and Pinellas counties, while USF police continue to assist.

Missing USF doctoral students were romantically linked, would never vanish willingly, family says

Two doctoral students at the University of South Florida are missing, the school’s police department said in a statement Tuesday.

Zamil Limon and Nahida S. Bristy, both 27 and from Bangladesh, were last seen on Thursday, the USFPD said.

Limon, a doctoral student who is pursuing a degree in geography, environmental science and policy, was last seen at 9 a.m. Thursday, April 16, in his Tampa residence, police said. There has been no contact with him since, and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office processed a missing person report for him.

Bristy was also last seen on Thursday, but at 10 a.m. in the Natural and Environmental Sciences Building on the USF Tampa campus, according to police. She is studying chemical engineering. The USFPD processed her missing person report.

Limon’s residence is less than a 10-minute drive from the NES Building where Bristy was last seen.

On Friday, just before 5 p.m., a family friend reported that they were unable to contact both Limon and Bristy. That call triggered the missing person reports and prompted police to enter both Limon and Bristy into missing person databases.

Officials have said the two are friends and may be together.

Family members also told NBC News it’s out of character for Limon and Bristy, who both have family in Bangladesh, to go off the grid and not keep regular contact with their loved ones.

Limon’s younger brother, Zubaer Ahmed, 25, told NBC News Wednesday that Limon and Bristy were “close friends” and appeared to be romantically linked.

Limon and Bristy were “thinking about having [a] future together,” but both were dedicated to their studies, said Ahmed, speaking from Bangladesh.

Asked if the two were thinking of getting married, he said, “As far as I know or as far I have learned, they are thinking about or talking about it,” but he noted they weren’t thinking about it to the point where they’d “take some serious steps, kind of like disappearance or something like that.”

Ahmed described both as “very serious” people who would not “disappear without telling anyone.”

Zahaid Hasan Pranto, Bristy’s older brother, 29, told NBC News the pair had a romantic relationship in the past but weren’t actively dating.

“From my sister’s friends, I came to know like she was still emotionally engaged,” he said, speaking from Bangladesh.

Both had plans to travel to Bangladesh for a visit, and Limon had booked his round-trip ticket, Ahmed added.

The day of the disappearance, Bristy had left her belongings including her laptop, iPad and lunch box behind in a university lab, Pranto said.

“Only the purse and phone was missing from there,” he said.

Limon had left his apartment with his phone and wallet. Police found his passport in the apartment, Ahmed said.

Ahmed said his family last spoke to Limon last Monday, Bangladeshi time, and his brother was “very busy” with thesis submission deadlines.

“So we didn’t call him for two days, and after two days, we [were] informed that he is missing,” Ahmed said.

“It’s been five days, and we are in great pain,” he added.

He said police told his family that Limon’s phone was last traced around 11 a.m. Thursday to his apartment, and Bristy around 5 p.m. that day to the USF campus area.

“Concerning is that police haven’t just found anything suspicious in CCTV footage, or they didn’t provide, didn’t share anything,” he said.

Bristy’s family last spoke with her around noon Tampa time on Thursday, the day that she went missing, Pranto said.

Pranto said Bristy talks on the phone with her parents twice a day, and that last conversation was “normal” and she mentioned having plans to go grocery shopping with a friend. She did not mention Limon.

“We could not contact her on Friday. So at that point, we [were] already concerned,” he said.

Pranto said police also found Bristy’s passport.

Trying to put together what we know so far. The two were not last seen together. So at some point, they must’ve met up. And there isn’t a vehicle involved. That’s a bummer because vehicles are easier to locate than people.

My other theory was eloping, but they were pretty busy with school so if they eloped, they would only leave quickly and come back quickly.

I’m stumped. Where are these kids?

From my own experience, I'd say 2 people working on their PhDs don't just up and walk away. One burned out individual, maybe. But 2? They both seem to have support networks.

Missing Florida student’s brother calls disappearance ‘suspicious’

The pair are friends and are believed to be together, according to police. Zubaer Ahmed, Limon’s younger brother, tells “NewsNation Live” that police have asked the family for DNA samples but have not shared any leads on what may have happened.

“It is very suspicious and unusual for us, and as we know, they are very punctual and serious about their study,” Ahmed said.

USFPD says that Limon, a doctoral student studying geography and environmental science policy, was last seen at around 9 a.m. at his residence in Tampa, Florida. Bristy, a doctoral student studying chemical engineering, was last seen at 10 a.m. at the Natural and Environmental Sciences Building at USF’s Tampa campus.

Ahmed says that while Limon and Bristy previously had feelings for each other, the pair would not elope. In addition, he notes Limon had an upcoming thesis deadline.

“As far as I know my brother, that is completely impossible for him,” Ahmed said. “He had a submission, a thesis submission, and he worked for two years for that and out of nowhere, he will disappear?”

That thesis deadline makes me wonder just how stressed he might be.

Missing University of South Florida students ‘endangered’: detectives

Two missing doctoral students from the University of South Florida are now considered endangered, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said.

“Recently, information that has come to light has led detectives to consider the two endangered,” the department wrote. Specific details were not released to protect the investigation, detectives said.

Per AI:
When missing people are considered "endangered," it means law enforcement believes they are at immediate risk of serious harm or death. This high-risk designation, often triggered by circumstances such as abduction, medical needs, or youth, signals a need for urgent action and greater resources, often leading to rapid alerts like AMBER or Silver alerts.

Missing USF students: Person in custody after barricading themselves in Tampa home, HCSO says

One person has been taken into custody in a barricade situation related to the two missing USF doctoral students, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office told 10 Tampa Bay News. Deputies confirmed that the person is connected to the case but is not one of the missing students.

Deputies responded before 10 a.m. Friday to the Lake Forest neighborhood near the intersection of Bruce B Downs Boulevard and Lake Forest Drive, just over a mile away from the University of South Florida's Tampa campus.

SWAT teams were brought to the scene after authorities confirmed that a person connected to missing students Zamil Limon and Nahida S. Bristy was barricaded inside a home.

Investigators said the person was taken into custody but did not immediately provide further details.

Neighbors were unable to return to their homes as the response shut down the entrance and exit of the Lake Forest neighborhood.

"When you see military and police and rifles, it's shocking," Gary Margosian, who has lived in the Lake Forest neighborhood since 1993, said.

Yeah, it's all over the place now. I wonder what happened??????????

A person is in custody in connection to two missing University of South Florida doctoral students, local authorities said Friday.

The person, who is not one of the students, was barricaded at a home in the Lake Forest Community, a neighborhood near USF's Tampa campus, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said. Officials would not say whether the person in custody is considered a suspect, only that they are connected to the disappearance.
