There were a lot of people who lost everything in the savings and loan collapse. Many suicides. It wouldn't be surprising if somebody like that wandered for a while before feeling like he had reached the end of his rope. Nothing left besides a few personal mementoes.

Of course we don't have any evidence of suicide for this guy. I'm more inclined to the idea of somebody transgressing a gang's rules.

Sheriff: Skeletal remains found near Molalla identified as California man who was reported missing in 1979

Following an investigation, the sheriff's office said the remains were identified as Kenneth Lee Bell, born 1957, formerly of Contra Costa County, California.

The sheriff's office said Bell was identified from personal effects found with the body. DNA confirmation is currently underway.

According to the sheriff's office, Bell's mother, who is now deceased, reported him missing in 1979, when he was 22 years old. He appears to have disappeared while traveling from the Bay Area to Washington to visit family.

Bell worked in the timber industry in the late 70s, and frequented the Portland area in that time period, according to the sheriff's office.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone who knew Bell in the late 70s is being asked to contact detectives through the sheriff's office tip line at 503-723-4949 or online at www.clackamas.us/sheriff/tip. Please reference case number 21-000584.

So young. It's a shame his mother passed without knowing what happened or him being found. Glad they identified him. The pictures look like holiday or occasion pictures. The last one looks like he is playing Battleship with someone, could be wrong but that's what it looks like. Family pictures. Makes me sad.

Interested to know more about what happened when they find out more.

So he was from California! And he worked in the lumber industry? I wonder if he was supposed to report to work and didn’t show up? Did his coworkers notice? I hope he didn’t stumble across a marijuana grow. Back then, that was dangerous.

It's a bit confusing as it says he lived in California but frequented the Portland area and worked in the timber industry and yet was on his way home or to see family in Washington. I guess all I mean is we have three states involved here right as to where he lived, worked and was from? Maybe there was time off/down time in the timber industry or some of these locations are closer to each other than I am thinking.

Well maybe he just went up there during the summer to help with the timber industry. That wouldn’t be that uncommon.

That's what I kind of wondered. Like was he heading to see family from his job or was he heading from California to home and maybe stopped in the area he worked to talk to someone or see people he knew... And then never made it home to see family in Washington?
