Search continues for missing and endangered 5-year-old in Fruitland, Idaho

Michael Vaughn was last seen near SW 9th Street and S. Arizona Ave. in Fruitland on Tuesday evening. Crews and neighbors were out all day looking for the boy.

The search for a missing 5-year-old-year-old boy intensified Wednesday as it entered its second day.

Michael Vaughn was last seen near SW 9th Street and S. Arizona Avenue in Fruitland around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The Fruitland Police Department said Michael is considered missing and endangered.

Michael is about three feet, seven-inches tall and weighs 50 pounds. He has blonde hair and blue eyes. He answers to the nickname "Monkey."

Michael was wearing a light blue shirt with a Minecraft picture on it, dark blue boxer briefs and sandals.

Idaho Mountain Rescue brought in highly-trained and rescue personnel to assist in the search.

Crews from multiple agencies searched the area near Michael's home by ground and air by drone and helicopter. They also went door to door, talking with neighbors.

Right next to the boy's home is a field where crews spent much of the day searching for him.

Neighbors say they learned about his disappearance about an hour after he was reported missing. They say Michael is a happy kid who lives with his parents and grandfather.

Cynthia Walker was walking her dog as the search was happening.

"At five years old, I don't know that he would wander too far without one us seeing him by now," she said. "There are volunteers, many, many volunteers out searching, scanning the fields and we just want to have Michael back, we just want him home safe."

So, yeah, LE says the one witness saw the "tricycle" in the Wondra's garage the prior Spring and I'm curious to know how LE came by that info...
Regardless, I simply don't believe that Michael would be on a riding toy in that other subdivision at 7:25. To me, it's a scenario that just doesn't make sense.

I think it's that when I think of tricycle, I'm not thinking of a "Big Wheel" and so I'm not fond of LE's use of the word "tricycle".
That, and I'd have preferred that the affidavit stated it as a fact that the "riding toy with the big wheel" (lol) that was recovered was identified by the witness as the same one.
The literal definition of a tricycle is a three wheels powered by pedals. It's that not what big wheels is? What if we find out it wasn't actual big wheels branded but a knockoff, would that bother you, too?

A big wheels IS literally a tricycle.

tricycle

noun a vehicle with three wheels that is moved by foot pedals

How is it not a tricycle?

Big Wheel is a brand of low-riding tricycle, made mostly of plastic, with a large front wheel and shallow seat. Introduced by Louis Marx and Company in 1969 ...

To me, the word is too general to be as descriptive as I'd expect it should / would be.

Why does that matter? It literally IS a tricycle. They also didn't have the size of it and any other descriptors, so I'm not understanding the issue, especially to totally dismiss it just because you don't like how they described it.

I think it matters because it's merely inferred that it's the same riding toy Michael was reportedly seen riding.

Regarding 5 year old boys and pink tricycles. At that age, a new toy is a new toy. It's different and fun, even if after an hour it's boring. Same goes for girls and blue stuff.

I think I'd notice that a boy was riding a pink toy, that it's probably what I'd remember most and possibly why I'd remember it all but the info re the sighting witness doesn't include the color.

Wow. I'm kind of speechless for a change. Would you notice any color tricycle a boy was on or just a pink one?

Honestly, I doubt I'd remember color.

People's minds sure process in different ways.

For me, a child on a trike of any kind or any color riding around unsupervised would stand out.

Pink though for a boy would stand out even more. Not because I think there is anything wrong with it, it just isn't something one sees very often.

I'm not overly thinking about the trike, I suspect it will be clarified at trial. I wonder more about how he came to have it if it was the Wondras, and any interaction there...

For me, too, and I think it's the first thing anyone would notice. In this instance, though, the affidavit doesn't state whether the child was alone.

If I'm honest, if I saw a boy on a pink trike, I'd think to myself he must be on his sister's trike, I wouldn't think it odd necessarily that he was on it especially if he did not have his own but that thought would cross my mind. and again i'd wonder why no adult was with him more so.

I can see too why it would be remembered by anyone who saw him.

Court records reveal new details in Michael Vaughan disappearance as suspect appears in court

ourt records released Monday detail the alleged involvement of four people of interest in the disappearance of Michael Vaughan, including claims that the missing boy was abducted, killed and buried in a Fruitland backyard.
A probable cause affidavit filed in June was unsealed after Stacey Wondra appeared in court Nov. 17. The document outlines searches, interviews and evidence gathered following the boy's disappearance.
During initial searches of approximately 300 homes, police say K-9 units tracked Vaughan's scent to a residence where Stacey Wondra, his wife Sarah Wondra, and their two roommates, Brandon Shurtliff and Adrien Lucienne, lived. All four individuals have previously been named people of interest in the boy's disappearance.

According to the affidavit, one neighbor reported to police that they saw Vaughan riding a tricycle in the neighborhood the day he disappeared. Another neighbor reported seeing that same tricycle at the Wondra home during a garage sale months before Vaughan's disappearance.
The Wondras initially denied any involvement in the case. However, in November 2022, Stacey requested a meeting with investigators, according to the affidavit.
During that interview, Stacey claimed he was home the night Vaughan was abducted and saw Sarah carrying the boy into their house.
Stacey allegedly told police it was originally Lucienne's idea to abduct a child to sell for money, and that they would receive a $10,000 cut. He claimed Sarah told everyone to "follow her lead," according to the affidavit.
Stacey told investigators that Sarah, Shurtliff and Lucienne duct-taped Vaughan and placed him in a duffel bag. He claimed they took the boy to Shirtliff's mother's home in Kuna that night, where Vaughan remained overnight.
According to Stacey's account, the other three returned to the Kuna residence the next day and brought the boy's body back to the Wondra home in Fruitland. He told police that Sarah and Lucienne buried Vaughan in their backyard.
Following his interview with detectives, Stacey allegedly told his mother during a jail video visit that Sarah accidentally killed Vaughan by suffocation.
Two days after Stacey's interview with the police, investigators executed a search warrant and excavated the Wondras' backyard. Law enforcement said five cadaver dogs alerted to the same area where Stacey told detectives Vaughan's body was buried.
Despite the search and ongoing investigation, Vaughan has not been found.
Law enforcement has not announced charges against Sarah, Shurtliff or Lucienne.
