FBI joins search for missing 11-month-old in Indiana; parents charged

The parents of a missing 11-month-old girl in Indiana have been taken into custody, police said Tuesday.

Plymouth Police Chief David Bacon said at a news conference that Kenneth Lain and Tiffany Coburn were being charged with neglect of a dependent.

The FBI is now assisting in the search for Mercedes Lain, WNDU reported.

She is described as a white female, 2 feet tall and 19 pounds with blonde hair with brown eyes. She was last seen at 12:30 a.m. Saturday in Mishawaka, Indiana, wearing a white onesie with pink trim, the FBI Indianapolis office said on Twitter.

Plymouth Police Chief David Bacon said the man she had last been seen with, 37-year-old Justin Miller, is in custody and also charged with neglect of a dependent. Police said Miller is a family friend and was supposed to babysit Mercedes for a few days.

Mercedes was reported missing by her father Sunday night, and a statewide Silver Alert was issued. Miller and his vehicle were found in Starke County at 3:30 a.m. Monday.

Police believe Mercedes could be in the Marshall County area, but there is no sign of where exactly she might be.

“We’re just asking if anybody knows anything or if you have her, please bring her home or take her somewhere where she can be brought home,” said Stacy Milton, Mercedes’ aunt. “Please, we’re asking for your guys’ help.”

She is believed to be in extreme danger and may require medical assistance, according to the Silver Alert. Michiana Crime Stoppers has offered a reward of up to $1,000 for anyone who has information that could lead to finding her.

‘Our main focus is to bring Mercedes home safely’: FBI now involved in search for missing Indiana girl Mercedes Lain

The FBI is now involved in the search for a missing 11-month-old northern Indiana girl.

Mercedes Lain is the subject of a Silver Alert. She was last seen with 37-year-old Justin Miller. While police located Miller Monday, Mercedes’ whereabouts remain unknown, according to Plymouth Police Chief David Bacon.

Miller faces a charge of neglect of a dependent. Police also arrested the girl’s father, Kenny Lain, and mother, Tiffany Coburn, on charges of neglect of a dependent.

Miller was described as a family friend who was watching Mercedes. Police said Miller and the girl’s parents were cooperating with the investigation but offering conflicting information.

“We’re looking to establish a sequence of events,” Bacon said. “We know Mercedes was last seen at the Economy Inn on Thursday evening. She was left in the care of Justin Miller. We were contacted on Sunday afternoon by Kenny Lain, Mercedes’ father, who wanted to file a missing persons’ report.”

Bacon said that led to the Silver Alert and Miller’s apprehension in Starke County early Monday morning, as well as the incarceration of the girl’s parents.

Investigating agencies include the FBI Child Abduction Rapid Deployment Team, Indiana State Police, the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office and the Marshall County Prosecutor’s Office.

Bacon said police had received reports that the little girl had been spotted in Marshall, St. Joseph and Starke counties. They were still looking to confirm those sightings. Bacon appealed to help from the public in finding the girl.

“Our main focus is to bring Mercedes home safely,” Bacon said. “We’re trying to reach out to anyone who had contact with Justin Miller or the Lains over the weekend or previously in the last week to reach out to us to provide some information on where Mercedes may be.”

Search continues for missing 11-month-old Mercedes Lain

A desperate plea for the safe return of 11-month-old Mercedes Lain of Plymouth.

"Please bring her home or take her somewhere where she can be brought home. Please we’re asking for your guys help," Mercedes' Aunt Stacy Milton said.

Almost five days later, Mercedes remains missing, and both her parents Tiffany Coburn and Kenny Lain are behind bars, along with a third man Justin Miller who was babysitting her.

"We know that Mercedes was last seen at the Economy Inn on Thursday evening," Plymouth Police Chief David Bacon said. "She was left in the care of Justin Miller."

Now the trio is talking to investigators who are desperately searching for the missing child, but police say their stories don't add up.

"We’re looking to establish a sequence. All their information does not corroborate each other," Bacon said.

Little Mercedes was last seen in a white onesie with pink trim.

"She loved. She’s very loved. We want her home," Milton said.

Dad's Facebook - not much there other than a photo of (presumably) Mercedes around the time she was born - Log into Facebook
Mom's Facebook - pics posted of the baby (and 3 other daughters), posted the Silver Alert news - Log into Facebook
An older Facebook of Mom's - pretty much same as Dad's, not much other than Mercedes when she was born - Log into Facebook

Justin Miller's Facebook - apparently has only posted one thing, a picture of Mercedes around 5 am on August 14, the day she was last seen.... - Log into Facebook

Charges have been filed against the parents of 11-month-old Mercedes Lain, who was reported missing on Sunday and has not been located. Court documents say the parents have been uncooperative in the search for the missing girl.

this poor baby never had a chance with parents like this

So he previously allowed an adult male to "be with" his 11/12 year old daughter in exchange for drugs.
And only "child neglect" charges? He was pimping out his child. He should be a registered sex offender and not be allowed any other children ever.

From looking at him, I am wondering how he was even able to be able to conceive her in the first place. He does not look healthy AT ALL.

So now my biggest question is....why did this POS have this baby? Yeah, they say so they could "have a few days break". But I'm not really convinced it was just some innocent "babysitting".

Her parents, Kenneth Lain and Tiffany Coburn, had reportedly let Justin Miller babysit her so that they could have a break for the weekend. Miller had made the offer when Lain allegedly called him to buy drugs. Miller is apparently related to the couple.

I'll watch your baby for drugs? Sounds awfully familiar.

Will be interested to see what additional charges follow. Child neglect, and Neglect resulting in death charges are not enough.

Chipman said there was no proof the parents knew anything about what had happened to the girl, and they were quite upset when they were informed the child was found dead.

A cause of death has not been determined and an autopsy has been scheduled. Additional charges could be filed based on the autopsy results.

Investigators said there was no indication that the parents knew the girl’s fate when they reported her missing.

Court documents described Miller as a “family relative” and said Mercedes was given to him on Aug. 14. Miller was originally set to return her Saturday; however, it was then decided that he would bring her home Sunday.

Lain and Coburn tried numerous times to contact Miller; when they finally got a hold of him, he said he’d dropped the girl off with a neighbor. However, that turned out not to be true.

Coburn dropped a duffel bag off at a different neighbor’s house; the bag contained a safe that police believe contained “illegal narcotics.”

Police said Miller told them that Lain contacted him on Aug. 12 to discuss buying synthetic marijuana. The conversation then turned to difficulties the parents were having with the little girl.

Miller said he could watch her for a few days to give them a break. Police said his recollection of the events changed several times. He later admitted to “using synthetic marijuana on numerous occasions” when he was with Mercedes. He also claimed he’d been kicked out of a home in Mishawaka and then dropped the little girl off an the Economy Inn with a family acquaintance on Sunday.

Police said they initially had trouble contacting the parents about their missing daughter. Lain and Miller had been in contact with one another through Facebook Messenger. Coburn, during an interview, admitted to using methamphetamine on “numerous occasions,” according to court documents.

When police located the girl’s father, he was “under the influence of an unknown substance,” according to court documents.

On Wednesday, Miller told police that he was at a residence in Mishawaka “on or about August 14” and woke up to find Mercedes had died. He then told investigators he disposed of her body at a Starke County property located at 1025 E. and 50 N. He eventually led officers to the scene, where they found the girl’s remains.
