A little more than three decades ago, a hunter was roaming a rural area, looking for quail, when they stumbled upon a human skull, according to a California sheriff’s department. Despite searching the Mentone area for additional remains, deputies found none, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a June 22 news release. However, officials did find “a torn plastic trash bag with decomposition odor and child’s clothing,” which was kept as evidence, deputies said.

The sheriff’s department said an autopsy showed the skull, which had no teeth or jaw, belonged to a child between the ages of 4 and 8. The coroner’s office could not determine a cause of death. With no other leads, “the case went cold,” deputies said. Now, thanks to DNA technology, the remains have been identified as a missing 4-year-old boy — Derrick Burton, according to the sheriff’s department. Deputies said the remains were identified after DNA from the remains were sent to Othram Inc., a forensic genealogy company, last fall.

Genetic genealogy uses DNA testing coupled with “traditional genealogical methods” to create “family history profiles,” according to the Library of Congress. With genealogical DNA testing, researchers can determine if and how people are biologically related. Othram’s testing found potential “distant genetic relatives” of the child, and with the help of FBI offices in California and Texas, deputies said they contacted the child’s mother, Patricia Clark. Deputies said they learned Clark had reported her son “missing to the San Bernardino Police Department in 1991,” but he was never found.

Clark’s DNA sample showed she was a “100% parental match” to the remains found decades ago, confirming them to belong to the missing child, Derrick, deputies said. The sheriff’s department said it is investigating Derrick’s death as a homicide. Anyone with information is asked to contact deputies at 909-890-4904. Mentone is about 65 miles east of Los Angeles.

In October 1991, a hunter was quail hunting in a rural area of Mentone and located a human skull, without teeth and mandible. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Homicide Detail was contacted and assumed the investigation. A search of the area was conducted for more human remains, but none were located. A torn plastic trash bag with decomposition odor and child’s clothing was located and kept for evidence. The remains could not be identified, and no further leads were discovered at the time.

In November 1991, an autopsy was performed, and the coroner determined the human skull belonged to a child between 4 and 8 years old. The cause of death was undetermined. The case was entered into the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs) as UP2550, but with no other leads were available, the case eventually went cold.

In October 2022, with funding provided by Roads to Justice (RTJ), the CA DOJ sent Othram forensic evidence from the human remains was sent to the DNA sequencing and forensic genomics laboratory, Othram Inc. Othram used Forensic-Grade Genome Sequencing® to build a comprehensive DNA profile for the unknown young boy and Othram's in-house genetic genealogy team used the profile in a genealogical search to generate investigative leads in the case.

In February 2023, Othram revealed distant genetic relatives to the decedent located in Houston, TX. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Detail contacted the genetic relatives and received consent for their DNA for further testing.

With the assistance of the Riverside, CA and Houston, TX FBI offices, Patricia Clark was identified as the young boy’s mother. Clark was contacted and it was discovered Clark reported her child missing to the San Bernardino Police Department in 1991. However, the child was never found. Clark’s DNA was obtained and confirmatory DNA testing then revealed a parent-child relationship between Clark and the human remains of the unknown child. This child is now known to be Derrick Burton and he was only a few years old at the time he was reported missing. The Sheriff’s Homicide continues to investigate the circumstances around Burton's disappearance and death.

A 4-year-old boy whose remains were finally identified last week was reported missing by his mother, who believed he had been kidnapped and taken overseas, police confirmed to SFGATE on Thursday.

In March 1992, the San Bernardino Sun reported that a boy named Derrick Burton was taken from his home in late 1990. According to the boy’s mother, who then went by Patricia Abdul-Hameen, she “last saw her toddler in a North E Street apartment in San Bernardino when she walked out after an argument with her husband. When she returned the next day, Derrick was gone.”

Five months later, authorities arrested Ismael Abdul-Hameen, Patricia’s husband, on suspicion of felony child stealing. Patricia told a judge that Abdul-Hameen “said that [Derrick] wouldn’t behave, said he was hard headed or something” and had possibly sent the boy to be raised as a Muslim in Amman, Jordan.

Abdul-Hameen pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to three years in prison.

A spokesperson from the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Office confirmed to SFGATE that the child abducted by Abdul-Hameen is the boy whose remains were recently identified. When asked if Abdul-Hameen is a person of interest in Derrick’s death, the spokesperson declined to comment further “as the investigation is ongoing.”
