California authorities launch search for girl who hasn’t been seen in at least 1 year

Authorities in Santa Barbara County launched a search for a 9-year-old girl who has not been seen in a year, and who has not been seen in a photograph in two.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office began searching for Melodee Buzzard on Tuesday after a school administrator reported she hadn’t been at school in quite some time.

Deputies attempted to contact Melodee and her mother, Ashlee Buzzard, at their home in Lompoc, but the elementary school student was not there, and “no clear explanation was provided for her whereabouts.”

Although the missing persons case is only one-day-old, detectives have been unable to confirm a single recent sighting in about a year. The most recent photograph they were able to locate was taken at least two years ago, officials said.

The Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information about Melodee, potential sightings or contact in the past year, to come forward.

“Even small details may be critical in helping investigators ensure her safety,” the Sheriff’s Office wrote in a news release.

ST. GEORGE, Utah (KUTV) — New photos provide a clearer look at the rental car Ashlee Buzzard was driving during the road trip that ended with her nine-year-old daughter's disappearance.
The vehicle is a 2024 white Chevrolet Malibu with no visible damage. The photos were taken both before and after the trip — not while Ashlee was using it.
The pictures offer a better view of the vehicle for potential witnesses.

Utah private investigator Jason Jensen said unusual or out-of-place cars could help jog memories.
“If you saw a car that’s misplaced, like if you see a small Tudor out in hunting fields, well, that’s a little weird," he said. "Or, if you saw specifically the Malibu with California plates or even New York plates, typically that’s going to stand out in rural Utah.”
Jensen said that while most rental car facilities clean their cars between uses, they may not clean the undercarriage, which opens opportunities for dirt sampling.
He explained, “If they take soil samples from under the car, and there’s a rich red dirt, red soil underneath, it might mean that they were in the area of Moab or something. So that can give them an idea where to look.”
California private investigator Bill Garcia said the rental car may also help through its GPS tracking data, which rental car companies use in case a vehicle is stolen. However, some trackers have gaps in monitoring.
“I’m hoping it had a long-running GPS that did monitor the entire route because that’s critically important as to where she stopped, the length of stops, and the different waypoints along the way," he said.
The FBI told the Bear Valley Country Store near Panguitch that Ashlee Buzzard’s phone was pinged by a cell tower at the State Route 20 and U.S. 89 intersection. Garcia said this was likely on the evening of Oct. 9. Officials said she arrived back in California shortly after 2 a.m. on the 10th.
Investigators said identifying stops along that route helps create a range of where Melodee might have gone.
“If you identify a five-hour window from the last reported sighting to the next reported sighting, you can take a map and a compass and draw a circle on a map," Jensen said. "The time it takes to go halfway into the circle and halfway back out of the circle is the total distance max that someone can travel in that given period of time.”
He urged residents in southern Utah and near the Colorado border to check for footage. He believes a likely range for clues is within Cove Fort, Grand Junction, Bryce Canyon, and Capitol Reefs.
Garcia detailed Ashlee's potential route home, according to the Santa Barbara Sheriff's Department
"She went down to 89, drove down it on to 20, south of I-15, intersecting in Southern California, most likely on Highway 210, and then 210 on into Ventura and home," Garcia said.
“Anyone in those areas between October 8th and 10th should look at either wildlife cameras or dash-cam footage or surveillance footage anywhere and try and see if they can see the car or Melodee or Ashlee," Jensen added.
Investigators are still considering multiple possibilities regarding Melodee’s disappearance, including whether she may have been handed off to another adult.
“You would think if somebody knew they were looking for Melodee and Melodee’s in my care, I better call the authorities and say, ‘Hey, she’s fine. She’s with me. I met her mom on the night’ whatever the reason is," he said. "But, the longer this goes without such a conversation, the more it would appear that that was just a false story and that something more nefarious happened to her. And that’s going to take a hiker or ATVers or somebody to stumble across remains and call it in.”
Garcia said he is “pretty confident” Melodee made it back to California, citing neighbors’ observations.
“What was unusual about that is she backed that rental car up into the garage—something that neighbors said they had never seen her do. So that’s interesting," he said.
He plans to survey the Lompoc area in the coming weeks.
“If something happened to Melodee along the route — maybe in Utah, maybe in Nevada — that could have major implications if Ashley didn’t address whatever situation that Melodee may have encountered," Garcia said.
Ashlee Buzzard is back at her home with a GPS tracker after being released on false imprisonment charges.
She is scheduled to return to court next week.

Just came here for the same reason and heard the same.

You know, i have wondered at times if Melodee was ever put in the trunk. It would be a good way of throwing off LE, first she is seen with her in one town and then she is not... I also have wondered if the entire trip was to throw off LE and she left her somewhere in CA on return but I wasn't thinking at home since home is watched... Backing into the garage would make the trunk less viewable to anyone watching if she removed anything from the trunk... Does the garage door have small windows, i don't know...

The thing I watched also said she rented another car after she got back. Supposedly.

Criminally Obsessed (mentioned above, she s on that news station) is going to show an interview with Garcia sometime today supposedly.

Another new look.

Preliminary hearing set in Buzzard false imprisonment case; search for missing 9-year-old Melodee Buzzard continues

Ashlee Buzzard made a brief appearance Wednesday morning at Lompoc Superior Court, where a preliminary hearing was set in the felony false imprisonment case filed against her earlier this month.

The charge remains separate from the ongoing search for her missing 9-year-old daughter, Melodee Buzzard.

Buzzard, 40, of Vandenberg Village, entered Department 1 dressed casually in a long-knit cardigan sweater with her head held slightly down to avoid eye contact.

She wore makeup and long, curly hair pulled back in a ponytail — a noticeable shift from the short, curly hairstyle at her Nov. 12 arraignment in Santa Maria. She walked quietly to the counsel table beside her attorney, Adrian Galvan, with the county Public Defender's Office.

The courtroom, with approximately 25 spectators, included various media outlets.

Her case was called after several other matters and the hearing lasted roughly a minute, during which Buzzard and Galvan confirmed readiness for the full preliminary hearing set for Thursday at 8:30 a.m.

Buzzard immediately left the courtroom — still wearing the GPS ankle monitor assigned to her during her Nov. 12 arraignment — flanked by deputies, and followed by reporters attempting to ask questions. She was ushered into a silver sedan driven by a county liaison for return to her residence.

The false imprisonment charge stems from a Nov. 6 incident involving a man identified in court documents as Tyler S. Brewer.

Prosecutors allege Buzzard unlawfully restrained Brewer inside her Vandenberg Village home on Mars Avenue.

At her arraignment, Buzzard pleaded not guilty and was released under court supervision with conditions including GPS monitoring, a weapons prohibition, and a no-contact order with Brewer.

Court filings indicate she has no prior criminal record and did not waive her right to a speedy trial.

Buzzard is scheduled to return to Lompoc Superior Court on Thursday morning for the preliminary hearing, with another appearance set as the case progresses.

Now I'm wondering if that rental car has the back seat that folds down to enter/exit the trunk.

We borrowed a car like that one time and the kids with me were all taking turns/fighting over doing it.

My car turns into a hatchback although honestly i forgot about that til just now, and you'd never know if you didn't know. Even with a regular trunk she sure could have put her in it for any leg of the trip, it isn't as if they have video of the entire trip, not even close.

I used to put my sister and a friend in my trunk to go to the drive in and not pay lol. People can breathe in them, not sure if forever but definitely for a very long time.

You know, i always noted they not only centered on Utah, they also talked about NV, AZ and San Bernadino, those parts of her trip. They always included Calfornia and it was as if MB disappearing is on that leg of the trip, including Cali.

Neighbors said it was unusual for her to back into her garage. I also would have thought they would have gotten the gps data back from the car by now to see where she went.
Yeah i just read that. Its a bit worrying to think that Melodee could have been deceased in the boot, for example.

You smuggled them into the drive-in LOL? I wonder how many did that? I always assumed you just paid for the car irrespective of number of passengers.

My Suzuki is a hatchback with a split rear seat foldable down. I normally always have them down due to me picking up bales of hay and horse feed most weeks. The parcel shelf just goes up with the rear hatch normally, but I permanently have that removed too.

Oh probably quite a few did it as the "bouncer" immediately knew to check the trunk, and found them. Lol. We knew him somewhat and he let us in and can't recall but pretty sure they ended up having to pay.

I had my hatchback down for probably a year because I never had rear passengers and did occasionally haul things. It got put back up for some reason (probably passengers) and i had forgotten I even have one lol, until now.

I don't think of MB as dead in the trunk but maybe alive in it. For some reason I just don't think she's dead, I think mom just doesn't want her taken away. I pray I am right but am well aware I may not be...

The car we had it was the middle of the back seat that folded down to access the trunk. It worked great for what we were doing as the kids kept their road trip materials in the trunk, but could easily reach in and grab what they wanted without having to sit with all their stuff in the seats or floorboards. It wasn't the entire rear seat that folded down.

I am positive that they have tested for that by now. If they haven't, then I have no hope of them doing a very good job in finding her without ruling that part out by now.

We had different drive in's that did it both ways. Some charged by the car and some charged by the person. You can bet that there were probably more that had people in the trunk on the ones that charged by the vehicle.

Yeah I know what you mean. Would be ideal with traveling with kids.

Her car was a Malibu wasn't t? It isn't going to have that. Might have something like mine but doubtful. Probably just a four door, front and back seat and trunk.

From the pics I have seen, it looks as if a 2024 Malibu possibly has that option. I can't post a pic right now but google 2024 Malibu rear seat images and you will see what I mean. It looks exactly like the setup of the car we had. I just didn't see any opened up, if it does, but ran out of time and had to get back to real life duties.
