California authorities launch search for girl who hasn’t been seen in at least 1 year

Authorities in Santa Barbara County launched a search for a 9-year-old girl who has not been seen in a year, and who has not been seen in a photograph in two.

The Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office began searching for Melodee Buzzard on Tuesday after a school administrator reported she hadn’t been at school in quite some time.

Deputies attempted to contact Melodee and her mother, Ashlee Buzzard, at their home in Lompoc, but the elementary school student was not there, and “no clear explanation was provided for her whereabouts.”

Although the missing persons case is only one-day-old, detectives have been unable to confirm a single recent sighting in about a year. The most recent photograph they were able to locate was taken at least two years ago, officials said.

The Sheriff’s Office is urging anyone with information about Melodee, potential sightings or contact in the past year, to come forward.

“Even small details may be critical in helping investigators ensure her safety,” the Sheriff’s Office wrote in a news release.

Hearing continued in Buzzard case as discovery dispute emerges

A hearing in the murder case against Ashlee Lynn Buzzard was continued Wednesday morning in Santa Barbara County Superior Court in Lompoc, as attorneys argued over access to forensic evidence ahead of a preliminary hearing.

Buzzard, 40, appeared in court for the scheduled hearing, where her defense attorney said a large volume of recently received discovery materials had not yet been fully reviewed by forensic experts. The defense argued additional underlying data tied to prosecution evidence is needed to adequately prepare.

Prosecutors disputed the timing and scope of the request, stating they have already provided materials beyond their required obligations and asked the court for additional time to respond to new legal arguments raised during the hearing.

Judge Stephen Dunkle continued the motion to May 7 at 1:30 p.m. to allow both sides to clarify what evidence has been disclosed and what may still be outstanding. No preliminary hearing date was set.

Buzzard waived time through July, allowing the case to proceed beyond standard statutory timelines.

A separate hearing related to the case is scheduled for May 6 at 1:30 p.m. at the Santa Maria Superior Court, where Judge Denise Hippach is expected to review issues surrounding a search warrant used in the investigation.

Ashlee Buzzard appears in court as judge denies motion challenging search of home

A judge denied a defense motion Wednesday challenging a search warrant connected to the investigation into the death of 9-year-old Melodee Buzzard.

Melodee's mother, Ashlee Buzzard, who is charged with murder for the little girl's death, appeared in Santa Maria court for a motion to quash and traverse the warrant. Defense attorney Erica Sutherland argued that detectives included false statements and omissions in the affidavit used to search Buzzard’s Vandenberg Village home in October 2025.

Sutherland argued that at the time the warrant was approved, investigators had only been looking for Melodee for about 24 hours. She also argued the affidavit did not include evidence that Melodee had been harmed and said detectives were relying on a "hunch" rather than specific facts showing a crime had occurred.

Prosecutor Jordan Lockey pushed back, arguing the affidavit established probable cause when viewed under the “totality of the circumstances.” Lockey emphasized that Melodee had not been enrolled in school or a homeschool program and that investigators were trying to locate a missing 9-year-old child.

During the hearing, the court referenced evidence investigators said they observed inside the home, including what detectives described as a child’s bedroom that did not appear to be lived in. According to statements made in court, detectives reported finding minimal clothing and toys, spiderwebs on windowsills, and a lack of hygiene items such as a toothbrush and toothpaste.

Prosecutors also said Child Welfare Services investigations showed few signs that a child lived in the home. Photos of the room were provided to the court.

During arguments surrounding the scope of the warrant, attorneys also discussed items investigators found inside Buzzard’s purse, including wet wipes, a shell casing and what was initially believed to be a key fob but later identified as a recording device.

Defense attorneys argued the items were not in plain view and were discovered during a more extensive search of the purse.

The judge ultimately denied the motion to quash, finding there was probable cause to issue the warrant. The judge also pushed back on suggestions the warrant had been approved hastily, stating in court that the warrant review “was not done in haste.”

Judge denies motion seeking additional discovery in Vandenberg Village girl's murder case

For the second time in two days, another motion by the defense in the Ashlee Buzzard case was denied by a Santa Barbara County Superior Court judge.

In a Lompoc courtroom Thursday afternoon, Defense attorney Erica Sutherland stated she filed the motion to compel in an attempt to obtain what she calls missing items of discovery from the prosecution, citing body camera video and data that led to certain findings.

Prosecutor Jordan Lockey argued against the motion, calling the request speculative and broad.

When announcing the decision to deny the motion, Judge Stephen Dunkle said he did not feel the specific information being requested would alter a judge’s ruling during the preliminary hearing.

Both sides are expected to come back on May 27 at 1:30 p.m. to set a date for a preliminary hearing where a judge will hear from both sides in the case before ruling on whether there’s probable cause to move the case forward to trial.
