This is one I would like to follow. Title needs fixing, just starting a thread. It was a strange one from when it unfolded. I wondered what was going on with it now and thought about this little girl tonight, so looked it up. The Quanell guy was involved then TX Equusearch and more...

I remember this case now that you posted it. If anyone is like me and needs a refresher, this seems to be a good summary:

Mom's boyfriend, Derion Vence, told police he was on his way to the airport on May 3 when he pulled over to see if he had a flat tire, and some men approached him and beat him up until he passed out. After 24 hours he woke up to find Maleah gone. He walked to a nearby hospital with his son. (Surveillance footage later showed that he was actualy dropped off by car. Other footage showed Maleah never left the home after entering it on April 30.

I don't believe he's been charged with murder at this time...

Vence is charged with tampering with evidence, namely a corpse. He is also charged with injury to a child causing serious bodily injury.

I forgot they did not charge him with murder although I remember we felt that would be coming. So they never did?

It was a horrible case, they all are, but this one more than some. This one also became pretty publicly known compared to some.

Thanks for finding a good recap of the case.

Isn't injury to a child causing serious bodily injury the same as MURDER?

:gaah:

I never really understood the charges in this case either and the lack of anything relating to murder/homicide. He basically allegedly confessed to her being harmed by an "accident" etc. like when he "pushed" her off his lap or some such, although I am sure his story was not the real story of what he actually did to her.

Then on top of everything else, just before her remains were "found", a lawn mower hit them... That whole part of this case was a bit odd... I only bring it up because I wonder if autopsy was unable to possibly determine some things for charges although I don't recall. I do know he was charged with the charges he does have before they retrieved her remains, well I am pretty sure I recall that right anyhow.

I am not sure I ever heard this but this article and trial was from a year ago in 2020. I didn't catch it until I read that Maleah died last May and it was longer ago than that.

I see it is/was a jury trial over custody. I just noticed that in the Lori Daybell special on TV, that her fight with Joe in Texas also I believe was a jury trial over custody. I have never before heard of a jury trial in family matters/divorce court/custody battles. Now I have heard it twice, both in Texas.

I followed this case closely and while Maleah's father was not involved in her death, I am unsure of his parenting either or how present he was as a father. I would be curious how this ended up and what is going on now.

Justice for Maleah Davis: The story that shook Houston | How to watch on KHOU 11+

In May 2019, 4-year-old Maleah Davis was reported missing by her mother's fiancé. What followed was a painful and emotional search that gripped the Houston area — a community desperate for answers.

This KHOU 11+ Original retraces the case that outraged the public and forever changed a family. You’ll see KHOU 11 reports as we covered the investigation from the start, revisit key moments in the case, and the unanswered questions that remain in the search for full justice for Maleah.

Our KHOU 11+ Original dives into:
  • The initial lies that misled the investigation
  • Surveillance footage that unraveled the truth
  • The timeline of Maleah’s final days
  • What the community and city leaders demanded in her name

I see I started the thread. Man yrs since last posting. I did follow this one from the beginning and it broke my heart, they all do.

I HATE how there just are so many one forgets to go back, all take my heart, but some really stand out depending on the time I had, how much I followed and what happened. I did follow this one heavily. I used to try to go back and bump but not so great about it any longer. I need to try to remember to watch this. And come back and refresh. I recall well his story, etc. but did he ever get tried and convicted?

'No stone unturned': Acevedo says investigation of Maleah Davis' death is ongoing

Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said Thursday his detectives are conducting an effective and thorough investigation into the death of Maleah Davis.

The chief spoke briefly about the case of the 4-year-old Houston girl who was missing for more than a month before her remains were found along a rural road hundreds of miles away.

“Cowards with no soul just dumped her like she’s roadkill, and I’m just grateful we were able to bring her home,” Acevedo said.

Maleah’s remains were found after community activist Quanell X said her stepfather, Derion Vence, who is being held in jail on an evidence tampering charge, confessed to dumping her body in Arkansas.

Acevedo said he is not worried about whether Vence’s confession will stand up in court.

“When he told Quanell X, we already knew who the suspect was,” Acevedo said.

As for other suspects, Acevedo said the department’s investigation will look into all angles of the case, including allegations of abuse or institutional failings.

“We want to leave no stone unturned to get to the bottom of what happened to that child,” Acevedo said.

Medical examiners are still working to determine the cause and manner of Maleah’s death.

This case was absolutely something else to follow back when it happened and after. Yes Quanell got majorly involved. TX Equusearch was too and flew to when they went to find/retrieve her body. It is not well covered but a ditch mower I believe hit the bag that contained her body. It was awful to hear and they tried to silence that info if i recall correctly.

There's been no doubt who killed her so not sure what they mean about the continuing investigation, what I do know is he was jailed and I thought charged.

He is a rotten POS and it was pretty obvious. He was no master criminal mind in his attempted coverup, etc.

I'd sure like to see justice for Maleah, it has been a long time coming.

Yes and if I recall the mower hit her as they were on their way to get her. I think it was a TX Equusearch .plane or if not, Tim was with.

It was an awful AND odd case. It haunts me too.
