Search Continues for Boy, 7, Who Disappeared While Fishing with Family in Ohio: 'We Just Don't Know'

A young boy vanished in Ohio over the weekend while fishing with his family, according to authorities.

The Dayton Police Department (DPD) says Lucas Rosales, 7, and his family were fishing in the Harshman Road area near Eastwood MetroPark when he disappeared. He was last seen around 6:40 p.m. local time on Saturday.

As search efforts continued on Monday, police said that they currently "have no reason to suspect foul play."

Speaking with CBS affiliate WHIO on Monday, the boy's father and sister said they had warned him from getting too close to the water, but that after he left them to join other family members, they're not sure what happened.

"My sister said she heard something fall and someone crying, and she said she saw splashes in the water and after that, we just don't know," sister Da'Najiah Wakefield told the outlet.

On Sunday, Five Rivers MetroParks announced that it had closed while the investigation into Rosales' disappearance continued.

"Dayton Police and Fire crews are working again today searching for Lucas Rosales," police said in an update on Monday.

"We have utilized aviation, drones, and K-9s. We have drained a pond during this search as well," they wrote, adding that detectives have also expanded their search area.

Family of 7-year-old missing from Eastwood MetroPark asks for prayers as search is suspended

Dayton Police and Fire crews have suspended their search for a 7-year-old boy missing from Eastwood MetroPark. Today, News Center 7 spoke to his family near the river where he was last seen.

Lucas Rosales was last seen fishing with his family at Eastwood MetroPark Saturday evening.

His father, Agustin Rosales, and sister, Da’Najiah Wakefield, spoke to our team about what lead up to his disappearance.

“We went to go fishing and to go running and playing, and walked to the river,” Agustin said.

He said when they were at the river, he was reminding his son to stay closer to him and away from the edge of the water.

Wakefield said at that time she, Lucas and her father were separated from the rest of the family.

At some point, Lucas went to go find other members of his family. Wakefield and Agustin said they don’t know what happened after that.

“My sister said she heard something fall and someone crying, and she said she saw splashes in the water and after that, we just don’t know,” Wakefield explained.

That was when they noticed Lucas was gone.

“We were yelling for him and looking around for about 15 minutes and then we called the police,” she said.

Since then, the family has been out at Eastwood MetroPark everyday.

Lucas’ sister told News Center 7 that he didn’t know how to swim.

“He was scared of water,” Wakefield said.

Dayton Police and Fire suspended formal search operations Monday afternoon. Still, the family is hoping for Lucas to be found.

“Please help me pray for my kid, that we will find him,” Agustin said.

Dayton Fire Captain Brad French said Monday evening that due to the timeline of the incident and the information available, the operation was transitioned from a search and rescue to a recovery operation.

Texas EquuSearch, family continue search for 7-year-old missing from Eastwood MetroPark

The search for a 7-year-old boy missing from Eastwood MetroPark is underway the day after the fire department suspended their search.

The family of Lucas Rosales, representatives from Texas EquuSearch and volunteers from the Dayton Police Department returned to the park Tuesday to look for Lucas, according to News Center 7 crews on scene.

Lucas went missing from the park Saturday evening when he was out fishing with his family.

The search comes a day after the Dayton Fire Department suspended their search for the boy, which was transitioned to a recovery operation Monday. Dayton Fire Captain Brad French said the department didn’t have any formal operations planned for Tuesday in relation to the search.

“If any additional information becomes available, DFD command staff will re-evaluate the situation and engage resources as appropriate,” French told News Center 7.

Over the first three days of searches, more than 100 people, including multiple rescue crews, boats, trained volunteer search groups, K-9s, have searched the areas surrounding where Lucas was last seen. Detectives expanded their search Monday, but were still unable to find Lucas.

Police said Monday that foul play was not suspected in Lucas’ disappearance.

Dayton search for missing 7-year-old boy: Crews plan dam as river level falls

Dayton police and fire crews are continuing to search for a missing 7-year-old boy last seen near Eastwood MetroPark and Harshman Road on Saturday evening.

While active, on-water search operations for Lucas Rosales were suspended Monday afternoon, Dayton police and fire crews, Texas Equusearch and the City of Dayton Department of Water continued searching Tuesday.

Crews have searched parts of Mad River and the Great Miami River, including as far south as West Carrollton. Dayton Fire Department water rescue teams also operated in parts of Mad River Tuesday as part of a pre-scheduled training exercise and scanned the water for any signs of Lucas, Dayton fire Capt. Brad French said.

“The water flow in the Mad River has nearly doubled due to recent rains, but is expected to decrease in the coming days,” he added. “The decreasing water levels will provide the opportunity for the City of Dayton Department of Water to create a temporary dam on a portion of the Mad River to facilitate additional search.”

Police and fire crews are expected to be downstream of the dammed area later this week as water levels decrease.

“Emergency personnel and trained volunteers from several organizations have searched a land and water area of over 400 acres, and have spent more than 32 hours trying to locate Lucas since Saturday evening,” French said Tuesday.

In the past three days, crews have drained a pond and used thermal imaging devices, underwater and aerial drones and SONAR devices to search for Lucas. Search units deployed multiple boats to check the water and riverbanks.

Lucas’ mother said Tuesday it’s been very difficult waiting for her son to be found.

“You sit here waiting for him to come running out or something or for someone to tell you that they found him,” said Amanda Rosales. “When you’re just sitting here for hours upon hour and nobody’s found him yet it’s just torture.”

Rosales added she came to the park Saturday night when she found out Lucas was missing and stayed out all night looking for him.

She said Tuesday while at Eastwood MetroPark it was hard to be there while he still hasn’t been found.

“I wouldn’t wish this on anybody,” she said. “At the end of the day we see stuff like this on TV and we can shut it off and go about our day (without) another thought to it, but when it’s you in the situation there’s no words that exist that describe what I feel inside.”

Search for 7-year-old missing from Eastwood MetroPark resumes

The search for a boy missing from Eastwood MetroPark has resumed Thursday.

Dayton Police on scene told News Center 7 a search for 7-year-old Lucas Rosales is underway at the park. Police also said a temporary dam, which Dayton Fire officials mentioned earlier in the week, has been put in place on part of the Mad River.

With the temporary dam in place, police and fire crews are expected to be “on site downstream of the dammed area,” French previously said.

DAYTON — The search for 7-year-old Lucas Rosales continued Friday, nearly one week after he disappeared from Eastwood MetroPark.

Lucas was last seen Saturday evening while fishing with his family. Since then, searches have been conducted each day to try and find him.

David Rader, Director of Equusearch Midwest, said they have two sets of drones flying on the river all the way down to the mouth of the Great Miami River on Friday.

“It does look like it has come down quite a bit, so that’s kind of helping us clear areas,” Rader said. “It’s not so rough through the rapid areas, so it’s it’s giving us a little bit better vantage point and a look at different things.”

After Friday’s operations are finished, Rader said they will reassess everything and see if they need to come back Saturday or Sunday.

EquuSearch shares extreme measures used in search for Lucas Rosales
A week later, Rader expresses extreme measures has been used in the recovery mission for him.

“They damned the part of that tributary so we could get a better look at the spillovers, We also brought up our remote-controlled sonar unit to check some of the ponds, and around the facility that he was last seen in," Rader said.

According to Dayton Police Department, water levels were lower this week to help search for Lucas as well as drones, K-9 units, and other resources.

“We probably covered three to four miles, I know there were some kayakers that were actually utilized the day before yesterday,” Rader said.

Rader urges people to contact law enforcement agencies. “If you do happen to spot this little guy, make sure that you contact Dayton Police.”

EquuSearch and Dayton Fire have utilized all their resources in finding Lucas, according to Rader.

I can't even anymore pretend to understand soooooo many of these kinds of cases. If there is ONE thing you watch when your kids are young it is near water, near woods, parking lots so they don't run ahead behind a car backing up, etc. This is BASIC and I'm not even talking of abductors and ensuring they are in your sight.

I sure am not saying parents can't make mistakes or don't learn through mistakes, etc. and I'm not even accusing in this case but there is just soooo much of it that it gets hard to believe it or even give the benefit of the doubt.... ANY parent is lying who judges and says they never got distracted for a moment in their child's lives, etc., yes many judge as if they were helicopter parents who never had to poop or take a shower, I mean it's hard, but the moment one is distracted that's when the worst thing happens in ALL of these cases, one after the other... I don't know, I just can't buy it most of the time.

Again, not meant at this case specifically, just at so many where it is the same thing each time...

DAYTON — Dayton Police confirm a body was found in the water near Downtown Dayton Saturday evening.

Montgomery County Regional Dispatch received a phone call around 5:35 p.m. of a reported body in the water in the area of W. Riverview Avenue and Monument Avenue, according to Lieutenant Jeffrey Thomas of Dayton Police.

“Upon arrival, crews did locate a body in the water and the body was retrieved,” he told News Center 7. “That body was a juvenile male and the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office arrived on the scene.”

News Center 7′s Brandon Lewis says Dayton Police are not ready to release the identity of the boy and it’s a tough situation for the loved ones of the victim and those who responded.

<snip>
Sky 7 shows images of the scene after crews pulled the boy’s body from the water.

Dayton Police say they estimate the boy to be between six and nine years old.

Lewis says this comes two weeks since seven-year-old Lucas Rosales went missing at Eastwood MetroPark.

The park is roughly five miles away.

“We can not confirm that it is Lucas,” said Lieutenant Thomas. “The Rosales family has been notified because of the extenuating circumstances with the length of his disappearance.”

News Center 7 saw Lucas Rosales’ family at the scene as people watched everything play out. Thomas also said clergy was there to speak with anyone impacted by this.

“Of all the calls police officers go to, those involving children are the toughest,” said Thomas. “From the moment that we received the phone to today, we have tirelessly worked to try to find Lucas. We still continue that effort today. Now to this scene, retrieving a child from the river is a very difficult situation.”

Lewis reports Dayton Police did not say when exactly they will be able to release the identity of the boy.

We will continue to provide updates on this developing story.

Couldn't swim.

Was scared of the water.

Was told to stay away from water as he was getting too close, even though scared of it. He couldn't swim...

Was scaring the fishes and being too loud and so he went away to find other family members. Or maybe sent away...

Not sure of the order of things and not saying anyone did anything but just saying if all innocent, hindsight is going to bite for a couple family members in this one.

Certain we are all fairly sure who they found is this boy.

May yet another RIP. :(

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) — The body found in the Great Miami River near downtown Dayton on Saturday has been identified as missing 7-year-old Lucas Rosales, according to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.

<snip>

Schlientz & Moore Funeral Home is asking people in lieu of flowers to help the family pay for funeral expenses.

The family will receive friends at Woodland Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel for visitation at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 22. The funeral is scheduled to be held at noon.

May he RIP.

Not too surprised.

Apparently the child was not afraid enough of the water to stay away from it I guess?

You watch children near water until they are WELL past his age, past adolescence and even longer honestly if they are out swimming, etc. and he was already getting too close as was said.

I am sure people will donate and they will raise enough for funeral expenses.

I'm sure the family is devastated and my heart goes out to them. They likely realize themselves if only someone had stayed with this 7 year old and been in charge of watching him. That of course is assuming we know all the details. Don't get me wrong, it isn't unfair judging I'm trying to do--I and my sister were near water by OURSELVES more than once and had a couple of very close calls and stupid lack of wisdom incidents and were very fortunate. Neither of us could swim either. I had good parents that probably imagined we knew better or wouldn't do that. We were though older than him by a few years. We weren't going anywhere alone near water at his age and were constantly monitored but my parents trusted us not to do such things at a later age and we did do things that were far from the wisest. We on some level knew that though but at his age, they shouldn't be near water for one moment without an adult with them.

I'm not convinced of anything in this one but am just taking it at face value as that's all there is.

Devastating outcome.
