Girl, 4, found alone on NYC sidewalk is still unclaimed three days later

Three days after the New York City police officers discovered a four-year-old girl apparently alone and roaming the streets of New York City, officials said Monday her parents or guardians have still not come forward to claim her.

The girl, who told police her name is Sidaya, remains in the care of New York City's Administration for Children's Services roughly three days after New York Police Department officers spotted her just after 12 a.m. Saturday, alone at the corner of East 156 Street and Prospect Avenue in the Bronx, police said.

Surveillance video shared on the NYPD's Twitter early Sunday shows a person who appears to be a woman walking ahead as the girl crosses the street alone. The woman then stops to let the child catch up before proceeding ahead.

According to the New York Post, the footage was taken approximately 10 minutes before police discovered Sidaya.

It's unclear what role this woman plays, or whether she was a Good Samaritan or the child's guardian who then left her, police said.

NYPD video shows young girl led through Bronx minutes before she was found alone

A heartbreaking video posted on Twitter by the NYPD Sunday shows a young girl being led through the Bronx just moments before she was found alone on a street corner.

The girl — thought to be about 4 years old and using the name “Sidaya” — was found by police just after midnight on Saturday as she stood alone on the corner of Prospect Avenue and East 156 Street, police said.

Investigators found surveillance video of a woman leading the youngster through the streets just 10 minutes earlier, the NYPD said.

The clip shows the woman — thought to be in her mid-20s and around 5-foot-2 — leading the way as the pair walked westbound on Leggett Avenue at Fox Street, police said.

After crossing the road, the woman — whose face was mostly covered by a headscarf — stops to turn back and look at the young girl trailing slowly behind her.

The woman, in a denim jacket and white Converse-style sneakers, then walks off ahead again as the little girl follows, seemingly staggering as she walks in rain boots and wearing just a blue sweater and sweatpants.

Mother arrested after 4-year-old girl found alone on Bronx street

WHAT is wrong with people? Could she not take the child to the shelter?? Wouldn't most shelters take in a child before an adult? She leaves a young child in NYC of all places? Mark my words, I bet she ends up with a slap on the hand at worst...

Many shelters are adult-only. Family shelters / women's shelters tend to fill up quickly and/or have very strict rules.
However...most mothers would stay on the street with their child rather than abandon the child and seek shelter for themselves.

I'd like to know what the rules were for the shelter where she checked in.

The good news is that this precious child is still alive! Hopefully, loving people will care for her from now on.

Agree.

There are quite a few homeless shelters within a mile of this location, so it's hard to even guess. There is also a family shelter less than a mile from where the little girl was found. But many shelters do require pre-approval or registration or it may have been full.

Like you, I'm just glad she was found safely and I just hope this little one is placed in a loving home and can move on from this.
I do also hope the mother is able to get any help she needs.

Hmm. Yeah, I just don't get it. She didn't actively harm her but anything could have happened, she did not ensure her any safety whatsoever.
